I wish to commend those who have participated in the Ancestral Roll Call; however, I'm not in favor of the subject line of future posts digressing to "BURKE ROLL CALL" or "BURK ROLL CALL". Please be considerate of other subscribers who only wish to look at the subject title in determining if they wish to open a message to read it. PLEASE do not use "BURKE ROLL CALL" or "BURK ROLL CALL" as a subject line for your query. PLEASE use the name of your ancestor, year of birth and death (if known) and location or migration path (if known). Example of a Subject line: John D. Burke 1820-1880 VA>TN>MO>AR>TX Thanks again for participating in this endeavor as I sure a few members have already gotten leads in breaking through their "brick-wall". Need help on this line of Burke,/Burks. Not sure of John Allen Burk being William Joseph Lafayette's father. Feel free to help me straighten this out. Descendants of John Allen Burk Generation No. 1 1. John Allen1 Burk Child of John Allen Burk is: 2 i. William Joseph Lafayette2 Burke, born 1815 in North Carolina; died September 06, 1864 in Bolinger Cemetery, Madison, Co., Ar.. He married Sarah Ann Felkins December 28, 1844; born January 28, 1822 in Kentucky; died August 19, 1897 in Whorton Creek Cemetery, Madison, Co. Ar.. Notes for William Joseph Lafayette Burke: >From The Spring 1991 Madison County, Ar. Musings pages 16--18 This is the inscription on a tombstone erected in 1975 in the Bolinger Cemetery located about 10 miles south of Kingston, Arkansas. Funds for the new marker were solicited by Mrs Sybil Carter of Huntsville, Arkansas and the late Alva Burk of Kingston, Arkansas. When the new tombstone was ordered neither Sibyl Carter nor Alva Burk knew the first names of Burk or Tucker listed on the headstone . They also did not know the exact date of the death of Burk or Tucker . What are the facts about the two men buried in the same grave " by their women." Since John A. Tucker is my great-grandfather I decided to seek more information about this mystery. First let me review some of the stories, traditions and differing interpretations that have been circulating about what happened . Burk (age 49) and Tucker (age 55) were too old to keep up with the military company to which they were attached and were riding two colts which had been abandoned by enemy troops . They were straggling behind foot soldiers and apparently Confederate Bush ' Whackers shot them not very far fron home. Since all of the men had left the area, it took seven women and one young boy to get them on an oxcart to take them to the cemetery . That is why they are buried together as there were only women avaliable to dig the grave. (Source: Sibyl Carter, Huntsville, Ar.) What are the facts on which there can be a general agreement regarding the death and burial of Burk and Tucker? They were neighbors. in the 1860 census of Madison County, Ar. Kings River Township, the Tucker residence is number 746 and the Burke residence is number 753. When the Widow of Joseph Burk filed for a widow's pension the following affadavit was made on February 8 , 1883. Susan L. Tucker and Salinda Casey testified that they saw the soldier ( Joseph Burk's body) after he was killed. He was killed by a company or squad of rebels on Kings River, Arkansas , Sept 06, 1864 ,were not present at killing but heard the report of the guns . Said soldier at the time of death was with a squad of said Captain Bivens Company . Susan L. Tucker , P. O. Kingston Madison County , Arkansas and Salinda Casey in Aurora , Madison County , Arkansas." (Salinda L Tucker is the wife of John A. Tucker's son Robert S . Tucker ) In the 1870 census of Madison County , Ar. ( Sarah Felkins Burk ) pension application , Burk was a member of Captain Bivens Independent Company, Ar Calvary . The National Archives has no record of federal military service for Joseph Burk. Captain Bivens Company was probably an informal organization which some referred to as " home guards ". Joseph Burk's widow application for a federal pension was denied . In the 1870 Census of Madison County , Ar., Sarah Felkins Burk was the head of the household of seven children living at home. The same census shows Lucinda Tucker ( John A. Tuckers widow ) as head of the household with five children living with her . This indicates that both Burk and Tucker died between 1860 and 1870. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is another version not from the Madison County Musings. WILLIAM JOSEPH LAFAYETTE BURKE HISTORY William Joseph Lafayette Burke was born in 1815, the son of John Allen Burke .William Joseph Lafayette Burke married Sarah Ann Felkins on December 28 , 1844. William Joseph went by the name of " Joe ". William Joseph Lafayette Burke was shot by bushwhackers on September 06 , 1864 in a field where Felkins and Kings River runs together on a farm presently owned by John Russell . The following is an account of his murder told by Sam Steele, son of Mary Burkes . " my moms dad, William Joseph Lafayette Burke was killed by bushwhackers , him and another feller, Joe Burkes and John Taylor . They shot em off of their horses up there on the Kings River. They had been to Kingston, them and their boys and had started home . And them boys wanted to go to some house over there and rob some bee hives somebody had . The men told them they wasn't going to have nothing to do with it they'd just go home , so they got over on Kings River and the bushwhackers was laying and waiting for em and shot them both off of their horses. The boys, I don't know whether they robbed the bees or not , but they went on home; and the women, they had to go and build a rail fence around em ( The Mens Bodies ) that night to keep the hogs off of them. So they had to go bury em, the women did. The boys was afraid to get around close , afraid the'd ( The Bushwhackers ) get them , you know . They took a yoke of oxen and hauled em up there to the Bollinger settlement. There's a little cemetery there and they dug a grave and buried them in the same grave. They just put em up there . Nobody never put im up a head rock, till me and my sister and one of my cousins Howie Burks from Springdale , bought one. But we didn't know no dates , and so we set it up over there and put on it " Killed By Bushwhackers, and Burried By Their Women.........( End of Story as told by Sam Steele.) ANOTHER VERSION Another version of the murder of Joe Burke is that the men were the ones that wanted to rob the beehives , and that the boys had started home. They heard the shots and ran home and told the women, who came back and found the bodies of Joe Burke and John Tucker . The boys had to kept hid out since at this time , because the bushwhackers would shoot them. According to the dates of births of Joe Burke's children , the boys would have been: Andy, Age 13 William, age 18 ( This son might have been away fighting in the war at this time. Samuel, Age 12 James Henry, Age 16 Doc, Age 7 It is unknown which of the boys were with the men at he time of their murder. At the time of the murder of Joe Burke , there were at least 8 or 9 of their children still at home , so the widow Asrah , had a big job of keeping the family going. The 1850, 1860, and 1870 Census of Madison County , as well as other records show the name to be spelled " Burke " . Shortly before the death of " Shorty " Burke in the late 1980's he related to some people that the family merely dropped the " e " from the end of Burke and used the spelling " Burke " and " Burk" because it was easier to spell. According to Shorty, most of the "Burke " and " Burk " familys originated from the same ancestors . The following Burke Families are found in the 1850 Madison County Census and are probably relatives of Joe Burke. John Burks, born 1820 in Tennessee Married Sarah born 1832 in Alabama Isam Burks, born 1820 in Alabama Married Mary born 1829 in Missouri 1 Child: Pinkney, Born in 1849 in Alabama Washington Burks, born 1835 in Alabama Married Betsy J. My great grandparents were Michael Duffy and Johanna Burke. It appears that Michael Duffy (sometimes spelled Duff) was born in 1806 in an Irish county probably to the North of County Tipperary. Johanna may have been born in the townland of Forest in the civil parish of Templemore in County Tipperary in 1806. But she was more probably a servant at the Carden estate in Forest and born elsewhere. Michael Duffy and Johanna Burke were married on 17 January 1835 in the town of Templemore, which is in the Roman Catholic Parish of Templemore, in County Tipperary. They married only a few years after Michael's first wife, Anstice Larkin, died and left him with a son, John. Forest (Johanna Burke's home) is a very small townland within a mile or so from the large town of Templemore and the smaller townlands of Manna North, Manna South and Kiltillane. A bit further north are the small townlands of Borrisbeg, Klitilliha and Curraduff. My wife and I know the area well, having visited it twice. The Church where they were married is on Main Street in the town of Templemore and is now a music school. Witnesses to the wedding on 17 January 1835 were Michael Maher and Mary Byrne. Michael Duffy and Johanna Burke Duffy arrived at the Port of New York from Dublin in May of 1851 with their 3 children, Mary Anne, Thomas and Laurence Duffy. They eventually show up in Troy, NY around 1860 and settled there through most of the 19th century. Michael Duffy had a son John by his marriage to Anstice Larkin. John Duffy served in the CT Volunteers in the Civil War. Johanna Burke Duffy may have had a nephew named Burke who served with John Duffy. In Griffith's Valuation Survey (GVS), taken in Templemore around 1851, the following were found in the area of Forest, Templemore: William Burke Forest John Burke Mullane's Lane Manna South William Burke Barrack Street Manna South It is a high probability that the William Burke from Forest was either Johanna's father, brother, nephew or cousin. In GVS there were no Bourkes listed in Templemore Civil Parish. However, the surnames Burke and Bourke were used interchangeably throughout Tipperary. I am trying to find out more about the ancestors and siblings of Johanna Burke and the birthplaces of Michael Duffy and Johanna Burke. Gerry Duffy Palos Park, IL

My brick wall begins with my great grandfather, THOMAS URIAH BURKE, born May 9, 1836 in Russell County, VA. (This much comes from his Civil War papers.) I have not been able to tie him to any of the Burkes living in Russell Co. in the 1830 or 1840 census. I have searched the 1850 census records for several states trying to find my Thomas as a 14 year old, hopefully living with his parents, but have had no luck. One lead gave me hope of finding him listed with parents WILLIAM AND DICIE VENCIL BURK(E). William was listed as the son of JAMES BURK AND ANNA ROBINSON BURK. It seems that this James Burk has been a brick wall for many, maybe the James Burk of Burke's Garden. Today I would be delighted to connect my Thomas to William and Dicie. Thomas married Malinda Robbins in 1854 in Benton IA. She died in childbirth. The daughter, Mary Malinda Burke was raised by her material grandparents. After serving in the Civil War, he married Jane Parisho Parker in Springville Mo, in 1870. They had two children, a son, Frances Burke and my grandmother, Effie Burke. They both died in Fannin County, Texas. Zipra Morgan

In the fall of 1997, Denell sent in a query to the Harrodsburg Histoical Society, for research on Allen James Burks, Sr. The following is their response: Harrodsburg Historical Society The Morgan Row Museum and Researh Center 220 South Chiles Street, P. O. Box 316 Harrodsburg, KY 40330 606-734-3985 Dear Mrs. Burks, We have done a tremendous amount of work on the Burks, Berrys and Townsends. We have not been able to find answers to many of your questions. We are enclosing material which will probably be of interest to you, even though there are no clear relationships shown. We are of the opinion that Allen Burks, Sr. and George Burks, Sr. and Levi of this area are brothers and that their father is William Burks who is shown in Lincoln Co householders in 1787 and later. There is an older William living next to Levy (Levi) in the 1810 census of Casey Co. He and his wife are listed as over 45 years of age. This would make him (Wm) a generation older than Allen Burks. We are not sure of the parentage of Sarah/Sally Berry. If Nancy Berry Martin gave consent as Sarah's guardian, this indicates that Nancy Berry Martin was her mother. This would suggest that Nancy was the widow Berry who married John Martin. We believe Allen J. Burks probably had a son Berry Burks because he appears with Allen Burks in the 1820 tax list of Mercer Co. We are sorry we can't show records that prove relationships. We wonder if something more definite could be found in Lincoln or Casey Co.? Baker and Isou, Researchers ----- The Harrodsburg Historical Society enclosed the following letter from their archives: "University of Baltimore 1420 north Charles Street Baltimore 1, Maryland March 28, 1963 Dear Sir: I wonder if I may enlist your assistance re some data possibly in your records. It is impossible for me to come to Mercer County myself. I. Does your index to wills on record have the will of a Mr. Townsend— 1800-1850?—who had a daughter Elizabeth Townsend Burks, wife of Allen Burks? If so, what would be the charge for getting a copy of the will (need not be certified)? Answer: No will. II. Allen Burks (may be also called James Allen Burks) moved from Mercer Co to Indiana after 1820 (perhaps about 1824?). He owned a great deal of land. Do you have any deeds of sale from him in this general time period that would indicate sale of his total [can't read a few words] all at one time or separately. Answer: No. III. Are there any deeds on record from Allen Burks in which his wife, Elizabeth, is mentioned or in which her dower rights are mentioned? Answer: No. IV. Are there any deeds or wills or records that would indicate the blood kinship or ancestry of George, John Peartree, Allen, Berry, Levi, John, Floyd, or Edmund Burks? I believe George to be Allen's brother and Berry, perhaps, Allen's son by his marriage with Sally Berry in 1790 (first marriage). Answer: No. V. Any Townsend deeds in early 1800's? No answer shown. I hope you can help me. It means so very much to me. I will be willing to pay your for your trouble in looking at index and documents. Sincerely yours, (Rev.) Daniel B. Remember me from the Burks family? Are you interested in land that fell in Ky? If so: I might first suggest that you write to Kandie Adkinson (a Harrodsburg girl who still lives here but works in Frankfort) Administrative Specialist Land Office of the Secretary of State Frankfort, Ky. Ask her for her article in Saddlebag Notes Vol 13, No 3, May/June 1990 "The Kentucky Land Grant System" Her article clearly explains the complicated Ky land grant system. All the land grants in the area that became Ky (even those granted by Va) are located in her office & under her domain. If you have the numbers on your specific grant just send a check made out to Sect'y of State & include the information from the grant and request a copy (you will get a photo-copy from the micro-film in just a few days. Hint: ask for all the papers - just in case there are some depositions ..just tell her you are interested in genealogy (she is one herself and author of at least on book on her family) & she will know what you want. I have both books on land grants in Ky..the grants under Va & the grants while still Va. & will be glad to send you any data out of these if I can help.
