In your request to be removed from the list, I think you are missing something very critical and would urge you to reconsider. I'm critisizing you but simply want to pass this information along which you might not have considered. My family does in fact spell the name as BURKE, but throughout my research I have seen it spelled as BURKE, BURK, or BIRK in a variety of resources. I serve as a look up volunteer for the RAGK website and just this past weekend I was asked to do a look up in the 1900 census for someone researching your same spelling - BIRKS. I looked several times for their John BIRKS and came up empty, until lo and behold, I found him listed in the census as John BURKE. Another example from a look up I did this past weekend was for someone wanting a death certificate for someone by the name of RISEM. I searched forever until I found her listed as RISEN (with an "N"). Everyone must keep in mind that names changed frequently throughout the years and were subject to however the census taker or registrar wanted to spell names. If you don't consider alternate spellings you are bound to miss finding your ancestors. Good luck.

Poor Redmond BURKE had very little luck ... probably a convict sent to Australia from somewhere in the British Isles, have no idea where from; ended up in Sydney, where he met Bridget WHELAN sometime around 1843. She was a convict from County Kildare and a Catholic, if that makes any difference.. There seems to be no record of their marriage, but they did have a daughter named MARY on March 21, 1844. But poor Redmond died in 1845, age 35, and Bridget married James SULLIVAN, another convict, in August 1845. Bridget and James took Mary to America in 1849 and they settled in San Francisco. Mary grew up with her SULLIVAN half-siblings (five sisters, one brother), married a fellow from Chicago named Mathias RIEHM, better known as Mott, moved to Virginia City, Nevada, and had eight or nine little Riehms (some of whom died in childhood and so she recycled their names, much to my confusion) before dying at the age of 40 on Dec. 21, 1884, in Reno, Nevada. My great grandfather, Thomas Foley b1824 apparently in Glen Flesk just southeast of Killarney, married Mary Anne Burke b 9/13/1830 in East Canada, on 6/25/1851 in Hull, Canada. The family, which had eight children emigrated to Walsh county ND in 1878. I also have another Burke family. My oldest son, Michael, married a woman whose mother was a Barbara Burke, reared in Omaha, NE. They all now live in Charlotte, NC.

I have a unique situation because my ancestors were African Americans with some Native American (Creek or Cherokee) mixed in. I have found them in records as BURT/BIRT/BURK/BURKE. Due to slavery in this country they probably just took a surname which they may not have been able to spell. Also, because the census takers were sometimes practically illiterate, there was much misspelling. At any rate, the final surname has come to be BURKE. This surname could have been taken because some ancestor may have come from Burke County, GA. And, of course, it could have been the surname of a slaveowner. They started out with the name BURT, and there were white BURTs in Putnam County in the early 1800s. My ggrandfather of Putnam County, GA was James BURT b. ca. 1828 m. Anna ??? b. ca. 1840 Children of James and Anna: (All had surname BURKE) Addie, Robert L., Isham, James H. Anna Lou, and Sidney (my grandfather) . There may have been a sibling named Warren also. My grandfather's marriage certificate has his name as BIRT. In Putnam County marriage records from LDS there are several other BIRTs. They may be related to my grandfather, but are not his immediate siblings. My grandfather, Sidney BURKE b. ca. 1876, m. Willie M.
