================================== Dr. Walter Dujmovits Celebrates 85th Birthday ================================== Dr. Walter Dujmovits, President of the Burgenländische Gemeinschaft (BG), is celebrating his 85th birthday in the first week of this month. I invite all BB Members to honor Walter with short congratulatory messages; you can email him at bg@burgenlaender.com or burgenl.gem@aon.at. Walter was born in Eisenstadt in 1932, graduated from the University of Vienna and had a career as a high school history and geography teacher in Eisenstadt, Jennersdorf and Güssing. A 1956 trip to the US to visit emigrant family members in Pennsylvania led to his interest in the mass migration of Burgenländers. He joined the then-new Burgenländische Gemeinschaft on his return and became its Vice President in 1958; in 1985, he became its third President. During his time as VP, Walter organized the first Burgenland Government Delegation visit to the US (held in 1971 in honor of Burgenland's 50th Anniversary), completed the first edition of his book in 1975, and obtained his Ph.D. in 1981. The second edition of his book would be published in 1992 and the third in 2012. With Walter's permission, an English issue of the 3rd edition was published by the BB in 2013; over 1100 copies have been purchased! Walter just participated in the 2017 Burgenland Government Delegation visit and, while I don't know for sure, I suspect he has participated in all 10 Delegation visits over these past 46 years! In honor of his 85th birthday and on behalf of the Burgenland Bunch, I say congratulations and many thanks to Walter for all he has done to facilitate the longstanding, affirmative relationship between the Burgenland and its many extended emigrant families living around the world! His survey concerns the impact of the TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) on the food retail sector of the economy. His survey is being conducted simultaneously in Austria and the United States. He asks that we please take time to fill out the survey (it takes at most 5 minutes). If you are like me, you have not heard of the TTIP, but the survey also includes interesting questions about your preferences concerning foods, be they organic, genetically modified or pesticide free; the type of food stores you prefer; and the cost-versus-quality assessment you employ.
