-- [ From: Marvin E Burge * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] -- Re Carroll Clark's query 2 Oct 98: I have a Martin Burge born ca 1790-1800 Stokes Co, NC. Probably the son of Allen Burge; mother's name unknown. Had brother William and probably another brother Larkin. Unable to trace Martin's progress from Stokes Co (but frankly haven't devoted a lot of time to him). Allen Burge was son of Woody Burge (b 1744, Prince George Co, VA; d 1833 Rutherford Co, NC), who was son of Thomas Burge (b ca 1672-1676, Charles City Co, VA; d ca 1751-1752, Prince George Co, VA). Another researcher sent me an extract from Pulaski Co, KY, cemetery records, but omitted bibliographic info such as author/compiler and title. But here is a summary, anyway: One David H Burge, son of Martin and Rutha [sic] Burge, died 6 Sep 1922. He was born 10 Aug 1831 in Stokes Co, NC; served as a corporal in Co I, 13th KY Cav [doesn't say Union or Confederate, so I'd guess Union]; buried Trimble, KY. Spouse's name Eliza Jane Burton. One Drury Burge [you'll see this name a lot in the family], son of Martin and Rutha [sic] Burge, b 1843; date of death not shown. Spouse 1 : Martha J Roberts. Spouse 2: Louisa J Carter. Drury served Co C, 3d KY Inf. Martin Burge, no death date, buried Geo A Burton Cem, Trimble, Pulaski Co, KY. Rutha [sic] Burge, no death date, buried Geo A Burton Cem, Trimble, Pulaski Co, KY. Spouse of Martin Burge I can't document that the Martin Burge of Pulaski Co is the Martin Burge who, I believe, is the son of Allen Burge. If you are correct that your Martin was born 1814, then almost certainly he was not. May have been a son of the elder Martin, nephew (son of William, for example), or descended from a related Burge family in Stokes Co or Patrick Co, VA (just across the line from Stokes). A Vaughan or Vaughn family, by the way, was a neighbor of the Burges in early 18th century Charles City/Prince George Co, VA. On a militia roster with Thomas Burge. May be no connection to Stokes Co bunch; Vaughan a relatively common name. Marv Burge
