The only information that I have on your family is that Samuel married Jane Tuggle. He was a brother to my ancestor Randel Jefferson, son of Louis Burel who was married to Sarah Margaret Jenkins ,son of Dr, Jean Baptist Antonius Burel who was married to Patience Hanna Bird.Dr. Burel was from France. This family has been traced. What I have on Samuel J. Burel is that he wass born in Union Co. SCin 1833. He was married to Jan M__Tuggle. She was born August 10,1826 and died October 10,1891. Samuel died January 16,1865 in Cassville, Ga. He died of fever. He was in the 42nd Georgia Cavalry Regiment, CSA. I think that he is buried in Gwinnett Co. A lot of Burels are in Hog Mountain Baptist Cemetery. This is what I currently have. If I stumble across any more, I'll let you know. Hope this helps. Sarah Estes, Newnan,Ga.

I show you descend from JESSE BUREL/BURRELL....Is this correct? I rarely check the board, so can you email me direct? It is hard for me to remember to check the board, I show JESSE BURRELL married to Mary Jane Pruitt. and their children H ezekiah, Hardy, William and Harvey; but I show our common ancestor as WALTER BURRELL BORN 1742 Falkland Island Scotland, married to Mary Brown..I descend from Mark, Walter N., then Walter N. Burrell. Look forward to corresponding with someone of these lines. Mary Mc in Ga.
I am not sure E.D, Sloan ever finished the book. He did send me the pertinent pages of the Burels who moved to Gwinnett County. My greatgrandmother, Sarah Ann Burel married William Glover, and their daughter was my grandmother. Louis Burel, son of John Baptiste Burel, was Sarah Ann's father. I have the pages, and would not mind copying them. But on Tuesday, the 10th of Oct. I am going to Boston to see my two sons. I will return on the 20th of Oct. If you will contact me after the 20th, I will help you. I live in Newnan. Sarah Estes

"la burel" in france was owned by one of our ancestors-but i don't remember which one-i'll look again and let you know. if you'll email me at my aol address above i can send you link to the "la burel" website. and i won't be traveling there anytime soon on my income and my parents already sent me to france once for my senior trip-i don't think they'll be paying for a second trip-maybe in a few years i'll try to go-lisa mentioned going to there to me the other week.

"Burel" in French relates to a coarse woolen cloth from the middle ages and may denote the trade of one who weaves such a cloth. "Burel' in an old, unabridged English dictionary I looked at Northfield, MA, means "a course vulgar man", also. This could have been due to the nature of the coarse cloth becoming a metaphor, I suppose. I believe that Burel in French could be a name like the English Carpenter, Copper, Smith, etc., names that denote trades and occupations. La Burel in France may have been a center of the trade at one time or maybe it was named after the a successful trader in the coarse cloth. Who knows. You will find a reference to this in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. I think the story is "The Miller's Tale. Also, as you research the history of the French don't forget 1066 AD and William the Conqueror. I recommend that you read Eleanor of Aquitaine and The Four Kings by Kelly, (I think?) Other info. Burel may have it's origins in the Alsace-Lorraine region of France with later migrations to the the Cote d'Azur region. Questions here. Here's a tip about family resemblances: Sometimes you can't figure who looks like who until they have run up many years. Good luck. I hope you make the trip and if you do take lots of pictures! Butch

I had received a copy that was on a Mac format and I have a PC so did not get to work with it much. E.D. gave me permission to finish it but I later found out the I did not connect to this line so it was not a priority. If some one is interested in finishing the book, I can connect them with E.D. and see if he will extend that permission to them. I have the Mac data if you are interested in reviewing it. The data mentions things like trips to France and relatives there and some documents. It mentions a coin purse that belonged to Dr. Burel that someone has.

Ernie was there with his family and if Ernie is your father I most likely snapped your photo with the rest of your family. I am Cynthia and Rhonda's brother. We moved to Tampa from Auburn about 1954. Robert Harvey Burel is a point of interest in family history for me because he died at 106 years when I was 12 years old. I remember attending his 100th birthday celebration. RHB was about 9 years old when Sherman's army marched on Atlanta. Union troops camped on or about his homestead. So anyone who has ever met RHB can say they have met an eyewitness to Sherman's march on Atlanta. I think this is what they call, "in living memory". It is an important aspect in understanding the southern mind. My father remembered RHB's mother talking about going to slave auctions. The family didn't own slaves but the auctions apparently were attractions because of the drama of slave families getting torn apart. Butch
