Marie aux Mines in Alsace-Lorraine and she married Antoine Burch, my g2-grandfather, who came from the same area. They were married in France and had 5 children there. Two children were born later in Louisiana. The following is some information I compiled before I started using genealogy software. c1820- Antoine Burch was born, probably in Alsace Lorraine. He was the father of Marie Burch, and gfather of John Bernard Eugene Salles, my grandfather. 1823 - Elizabeth Mayeux aka Mayer) was born, probably in Alsace Lorraine. Her mother's maiden name was Hirsch. She was the wife of Antoine Burch, mother of Marie (Rose) Burch Salles, and gmother of John Bernard Eugene Salles. c1840- Theophile Jean Sylvain Salles was born in Sarremézan, France to Bernard Salles and Marie Lafforgue Salles. He was the father of John Bernard Eugene Salles. Elizabeth Mayeux (aka Mayer) married Antoine Burch, probably in Alsace Lorraine. They had 7 children, the first 5 born in Alsace Lorraine and the last 2 born in St. John Parish, Louisiana. When they came to Louisiana in around 1852, they left behind in France their oldest child, Elise (12), to care for their youngest child, Joseph (2). Thus they brought with them 3 children, Antoine, George, and Marie. Florine was born on 9/15/1855 in Edgard and Emile was born in Edgard on 8/16/1857. Elise later married a wealthy French general, General Lesage, and lived in Paris, never to visit the United States. Joseph immigrated to New York City when he was 18. There he managed a hotel, married and had two daughters and one son. His son later settled in Chicago and there, along with a man by the name of Schulze, he founded the Schulze and Burch Bakery, which subsequently grew to be one of the largest bakeries in Chicago. 1846 - Marie Burch was born on October 5 at Sainte Marie- aux-Mines, Departiment du Haut Rhin, Arrondissement de Colmar, in Alsace Lorraine, France to Elizabeth Mayeux (aka Mayer) and Antoine Burch. She was the wife of Theophile Jean Sylvain Salles, and mother of John Bernard Eugene Salles and Laure Salles Simon. c1852- Antoine Burch and Elizabeth Mayeux (aka Mayer) immigrated to Louisiana from Alsace-Lorraine with 3 of their 5 children. Theophile Jean Sylvain Salles came to New Orleans from Sarremezan, canton de Boulogne, arr. de St. Gaudin, Haute Garonne, France with his three brothers, Jean-Marie, Pierre, and Henri. Their parents, Sieur Bernard Salles, and Jeanne Marie Lafforgue Salles, remained in France, and died there. Jean-Marie settled around St. Martinville, Pierre returned to Sarremezan, France. Henri was the youngest and he worked in the boucherie owned by the Burch's. He died at around age 30 in Edgard, LA. On May 5 Theophile Jean Sylvain Salles, married Marie Burch(Memere), whose mother (Elizabeth Mayeux ,aka Meyer, Burch or Grande Mere) had immigrated here from Alsace-Loraine with 3 of her 5 children. The oldest, Marie Elisabeth, remained behind with the youngest, Joseph. They had 2 more children after moving to Louisiana. One of them was the ancestor of Dr. George Burch, the noted cardiologist. Marie Elisabeth later married Gen Jules LeSage and lived in Paris. Joseph came to New York City when he grew up and managed a hotel there. He had 2 daughters and a son. His son moved to Chicago and was co-founder of the Schulze and Burch Biscuit Company there. Jean-Marie Salles married Martha W. Tabor and they settled in St. Martinville. Theophile Jean Sylvain Salles and his wife, Marie Burch, settled in St. John the Baptist Parish where he was a butcher by trade. John Bernard Eugene Salles was born to Theophile Jean Sylvain Salles and Marie Burch Salles on September 27 in St.John the Baptist Parish, LA. 1871 - On January 22 John Bernard Eugene Salles was Baptized at St. John the Baptist Church in Edgard, La. His parran was his uncle, Jean-Marie Salles, and his marraine was Elizabeth Mayer (Mayeux). Note the church records in Edgard spell her nname Mayer, Henrietta says its Mayeux, and the records in France say Meyer. Part of the confusion is that they came from Alsace-Lorraine which changed back and forth from French to German hands. 1875 - Laure Salles was born on November 3 at St. John the Baptist Parish. She was the sister of John Bernard Eugene Salles. 1883 - Theophile Jean Sylvain Salles was killed in a duel having to do with a meat deal; he was a butcher). This information needs to be verified. He died on March 10, 1883 and was buried in Edgard, La. Registered in folio 18. Registry no. 134 (P.D.). His widow, Marie Burch, later married Francois Faucheux (before 1895).
