I believe Ira Burch to be the first (or second) son of Admiral Burch and Mary Etta (Marietta) Rathbun. Burch men named their sons after their brothers. Which meant there were a whole lot of men with the same name; of the same generation; but different lines. I would like to known if other researchers of Admiral Burch agree or disagree with my findings. I believe this Admiral Burch was born abt 1775 in Schaghticoke, Rensselaer Co, NY. The son of Thomas Burch and Samantha Unknown. Thomas (also called Theos) Burch and family are listed in the 1800 census of Springfield, Oswego Co, NY not too far from Simeon or Samuel Rathbun. Brothers of Mary Etta Rathbun. Admiral Burch and Mary Etta Rathbun are said to have been married abt 1795 in Williamstown NY but I have not been able to find a record of this. I can not seem to find the Admiral Burch family in the 1800 census.? An A. Burch is found in two 1810 census of NY.? County lines were being changed rapidly in NY at that time. As the frontier opened up families moved westward. The A. Burch listed in Oneida Co, NY is living by brothers and a married sister of Mary Etta Rathbun. I found a Steuben County History book on line that told of an Admiral Burch family living on the road to New Town Point in the late 1790's. It goes on to tell of New Town Point village changing its name to Elmira - town or twp? I have not been able to find that paragraph again. The county boundaries were changed and that area became part of Chumung Co, NY. A Whiteside County IL history book states that Ira Burch was born in Almira, Steuben County, NY. Thomas Burch bought property in Ripley twp, Chautauqua Co, NY in 1816. Admiral Burch is listed as living next to Thomas Burch in the 1820 census of Ripley twp, Chautauqua Co, NY. Admiral bought property in 1826 in Ripley twp, Chaut Co, NY. In 1830 this Admiral Burch and his family was living in Westfield twp, Chaut. Co, NY. In 1833 Admiral Burch and his family migrated to Noble twp, LaPorte Co, IN by Conestoga wagons and oxen. Ira, Peter, Calvin and Henry bought homesteads. Warren R. Burch did not. Admiral and Thomas Burch bought a homestead together. Not sure if that was his father or a son. Armenia Burch m to Daniel Rathbone came from Chaut. Co NY abt a year later. Armenia and Daniel Rathbone went to IA; Ira moved to Garden Plain twp, Whiteside Co, IL; Henry stayed in LaPorte Co, IN; Peter died before 1837 and his wife Amanda bought the homestead; Calvin moved to Marshall Co, IN and then back to Union twp, LaPorte Co, IN; Warren Rodney Burch and family moved to Marshall Co, IN where Admiral Burch lived with him until he died. I do not know when or where Mary Etta died. According to census there were 3 younger girls. I do not know their names, where they lived or who they married. Does any one know who these girls were? According to the 1830 census one was age 10 - 14; and the other two were age 15 - 19. That would make them born abt 1810 - 1820. rkleve@yahoo.com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
