She was born in Indianapolis, and was a native of Whiting, Ind. She graduated from high school and attended business school there before marrying Glenn Carlton Burch in 1945. Her husband's large and loving family always made her feel loved and accepted, and they were a great blessing to her. She and Carl moved to Barstow, Calif., in 1946, the first in the family to make the trek "Out West". She worked for many years as the bookkeeper for Barstow Furniture then as the bookkeeper for Happy Wanderer Travel until her retirement. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Santa Fe Friendship Club. She was also a member of a Bunco Club she dearly loved. She was active in her church, St Joseph Catholic Church until health issues prevented her attending. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 43 years, Carl; her devoted daughter, Judith Ann Short; and her sister, Mary. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and John Speakman of Bishop, Calif.; step-daughter, Jean Boyer and family of Fort Wayne, Indiana; grandchildren, Sarah, Walker, and Grace Speakman, and Carolle, Butch, Ernie, Jacob and Michael Iden; many great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Ruth loved and sacrificed for her family above all things. She had a truly sweet spirit and graciousness that will not be forgotten. A Catholic Mass will be said in her honor. Author: A_Brans Surnames: Burch (Burg), Mayer (Mayeux), Salles Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.burch/2190.3.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have a lot of informatio on the Burch history in Edgard, LA. I hope this will clarify some things for you. Also, I am seeking help in resolving the duel story. I am a descendant of the Burch's from Edgard, St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana. Antoine Zacharie Burch was my g2-grandfather. He was born in Alsace-Lorraine, France around 1815. He married Elizabeth Mayer (Mayeux) in Alsace-Lorraine, France. She was born in 1823. Elizabeth gave birth to 5 children in France: Marie Élizabeth Burch, Marie Burch, Antoine-Louis, George Burch and Joseph Burch. In the spring of 1854 the family set sail from Le Havre on the ship named the Roger Stewart. They arrived in New Orleans on 25 May 1854, having left behind in France their oldest child Marie Élizabeth age 11 and their 2 year old Joseph. They settled in Edgard, Louisiana where they had two more children, Katherine Florine Burch and Emile Burch. They owned a boucherie in Edgard. Antoine Zacharie Burch died in May 1857 at the age of around 42. Elizabeth was 34. She continued to run the boucherie. Later she married a man named Joseph Marchal and she had 2 more children. This is what happened to the 5 children of Antoine Zacharie Burch and Elizabeth Mayer who were born in France: 1 - Marie-Élizabeth, the daughter who had been left behind in France, married General Jules Zephirin Sage. She died in Vincennes, France in 1906. 2 - Joseph, The son who was left in France eventually moved to New York where he managed a hotel and then to Chicago where he was co-owner of the Burch-Schultze bakery. 3 - Their daughter, Marie Burch, was my g-grandmother. She married Theophile Jean Sylvain Salles who was born in Sarremezan, Haute-Garonne, France on 6 May 1838. He had come to Louisiana a few years before, following his brother, Aristide Jean Marie Salles. Sylvain worked in the boucherie owed by Elizabeth Burch. He also bought some land in Edgard. Sylvain and Marie had two children, John Bernard Eugene Salles (my grandfather) born 1870 and Laure Salles born 1875. Sylvain died at his home in Edgard on 10 March 1883 at the age of 44. My aunt told me he was killed in a duel. Marie Burch later married François Faucheux and they lived with her daughter and her husband, Dr. Norbert Simone. The Simone's had 4 children but only one, Nemour, survived childhood. His mother died in 1903 an his father died in 1905. François Faucheux died in 1904. Marie and Nemour went to live in New Orleans at the home of her son, John Eugene Salles, who had a French restaurant of St. Charl! es St. Marie died at Eugene's home on Grand Rte St John in 1925. 4 - Antoine Louis Burch (1849-1912) married Marie Lucilla Theriot (dob: unknown, dod: 1934). They had 2 children: Edgard Burch (dob: unknown) and Lucia Burch (dob: 1889). 5 - I don't know what became of George Burch who was born around 1852 in France.? ? ? Here is what happened to the 2 children of Antoine Zacharie Burch and Elizabeth Mayer who were born in Edgard, LA: 1 - Florine Burch married Julius Hempel. They had 7 children. Emile Burch (1857-1916) married Odile Champagne in Edgard in 1880. They had 9 children: Laurence Burch, Olga Burch , Stephen Burch, Edmee "Memee" Burch (1882-1962), George Edward Burch (1885-1930), Antoine Joseph Burch (1885-1936), Maurice Burch (1891-1913), Minnie Burch (1900-1980) and Roger Burch (1904-1981). 2 - George Edward Burch married Lottie Edith Monroe (1889-1976) and had 8 children, the oldest of whom was Dr. George Burch, the noted cardiologist in New Orleans and the youngest of whom was Dr. Robert Ray Burch. Now, this is my problem: according to D. Burch it was either Emile (dod: 1916) or Antoine Burch (dod: 1912) who was killed in a duel. This doesn't make sense to me as they both died around age 60 and after 1900. Dueling had been declared illegal for a long time before that. Also, 60 year old men are not usually as hot headed as men in their 40's. According to my Aunt Henrietta Salles, it was Sylvain Salles, their brother-in-law (and my g-grandfather) who was killed in a duel. He died in 1883 at age 44. Also, nobody mentioned Antoine Zacharie Burch as a good possibility for the duel story. After all, he was only about 45 when he died in 1857. I am looking for documentation regarding this death by duel story. Can anyone help me? A. Brans ? ? ? ? ??? ? According to D. Burch, it was either Antoine Burch or Emile Burch who was killed in a duel. But my records say that they died in 1912 and 1916, respectively. I think it is unlikely that there would have still been dueling at that time. However, it could have been Antoine Zacharie Burch, father of Marie Burch, who was killed in a duel because he died in 1857 and was probably around 40 years old as we know his wife was around 37. But my Aunt Henrietta always said it was Sylvain Salles who was killed in a duel. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: A_Brans Surnames: Burch, Mayer, Mayeux, Salles Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.burch/2190.3.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My g2-grandmother was Elizabeth Mayer from Ste. Marie aux Mines in Alsace-Lorraine and she married Antoine Burch, my g2-grandfather, who came from the same area. They were married in France and had 5 children there. Two children were born later in Louisiana. The following is some information I compiled before I started using genealogy software. c1820- Antoine Burch was born, probably in Alsace Lorraine. He was the father of Marie Burch, and gfather of John Bernard Eugene Salles, my grandfather. 1823 - Elizabeth Mayeux aka Mayer) was born, probably in Alsace Lorraine. Her mother's maiden name was Hirsch. She was the wife of Antoine Burch, mother of Marie (Rose) Burch Salles, and gmother of John Bernard Eugene Salles. c1840- Theophile Jean Sylvain Salles was born in Sarremézan, France to Bernard Salles and Marie Lafforgue Salles. He was the father of John Bernard Eugene Salles. Elizabeth Mayeux (aka Mayer) married Antoine Burch, probably in Alsace Lorraine. They had 7 children, the first 5 born in Alsace Lorraine and the last 2 born in St. John Parish, Louisiana. When they came to Louisiana in around 1852, they left behind in France their oldest child, Elise (12), to care for their youngest child, Joseph (2). Thus they brought with them 3 children, Antoine, George, and Marie. Florine was born on 9/15/1855 in Edgard and Emile was born in Edgard on 8/16/1857. Elise later married a wealthy French general, General Lesage, and lived in Paris, never to visit the United States. Joseph immigrated to New York City when he was 18. There he managed a hotel, married and had two daughters and one son. His son later settled in Chicago and there, along with a man by the name of Schulze, he founded the Schulze and Burch Bakery, which subsequently grew to be one of the largest bakeries in Chicago. 1846 - Marie Burch was born on October 5 at Sainte Marie- aux-Mines, Departiment du Haut Rhin, Arrondissement de Colmar, in Alsace Lorraine, France to Elizabeth Mayeux (aka Mayer) and Antoine Burch. She was the wife of Theophile Jean Sylvain Salles, and mother of John Bernard Eugene Salles and Laure Salles Simon. c1852- Antoine Burch and Elizabeth Mayeux (aka Mayer) immigrated to Louisiana from Alsace-Lorraine with 3 of their 5 children. Theophile Jean Sylvain Salles came to New Orleans from Sarremezan, canton de Boulogne, arr. de St. Gaudin, Haute Garonne, France with his three brothers, Jean-Marie, Pierre, and Henri. Their parents, Sieur Bernard Salles, and Jeanne Marie Lafforgue Salles, remained in France, and died there. Jean-Marie settled around St. Martinville, Pierre returned to Sarremezan, France. Henri was the youngest and he worked in the boucherie owned by the Burch's. He died at around age 30 in Edgard, LA. On May 5 Theophile Jean Sylvain Salles, married Marie Burch(Memere), whose mother (Elizabeth Mayeux ,aka Meyer, Burch or Grande Mere) had immigrated here from Alsace-Loraine with 3 of her 5 children. The oldest, Marie Elisabeth, remained behind with the youngest, Joseph. They had 2 more children after moving to Louisiana. One of them was the ancestor of Dr. George Burch, the noted cardiologist. Marie Elisabeth later married Gen Jules LeSage and lived in Paris. Joseph came to New York City when he grew up and managed a hotel there. He had 2 daughters and a son. His son moved to Chicago and was co-founder of the Schulze and Burch Biscuit Company there. Jean-Marie Salles married Martha W. Tabor and they settled in St. Martinville. Theophile Jean Sylvain Salles and his wife, Marie Burch, settled in St. John the Baptist Parish where he was a butcher by trade. John Bernard Eugene Salles was born to Theophile Jean Sylvain Salles and Marie Burch Salles on September 27 in St.John the Baptist Parish, LA. 1871 - On January 22 John Bernard Eugene Salles was Baptized at St. John the Baptist Church in Edgard, La. His parran was his uncle, Jean-Marie Salles, and his marraine was Elizabeth Mayer (Mayeux). Note the church records in Edgard spell her nname Mayer, Henrietta says its Mayeux, and the records in France say Meyer. Part of the confusion is that they came from Alsace-Lorraine which changed back and forth from French to German hands. 1875 - Laure Salles was born on November 3 at St. John the Baptist Parish. She was the sister of John Bernard Eugene Salles. 1883 - Theophile Jean Sylvain Salles was killed in a duel having to do with a meat deal; he was a butcher). This information needs to be verified. He died on March 10, 1883 and was buried in Edgard, La. Registered in folio 18. Registry no. 134 (P.D.). His widow, Marie Burch, later married Francois Faucheux (before 1895).
