Perry married Rutha (I believe her full first name is Rutha, I found Rutha Watkins (misspelled in the 1850 census Andrew Co, MO as Wadkins) as Rutha and my grandmother was named Rutha Belle Burch, I believe she was named after her grandmother Rutha Watkins). Perry and Rutha were married November 18, 1871 in Bourbon Co, KS. I do have a record that Perry Burch bought 160 acres on September 9, 1892 near Huggins, Texas County, Missouri. He passed away on November 5, 1907. I do have a picture of his headstone, along with Rutha Watkins Burch and Rutha's mother Eliza Jane (Watkins, Brock, Asher) Pace. I for one am happy to know of the result of your research as it is a stone I need not now turn. I already have the Benjamin Burch (1753-1830) data from NARA. I also thank you for the information about Lydia Earl which was unknown to me; that is, that she was evidently a thorough family historian. I had wondered how it was that she became involved with research about Thomas Burch. Your attempt to contact Lola Robertson also intrigues me and I wish you success in that endeavor. How is it that you are or may be connected to this Burch lineage? Do you possess a copy of the settlement of Thomas Burch's intestate estate? If not and you desire it, I can provide you with a transcript from my written notes taken taken from: Document No. 3, Deed Book 17, p. 278, Hardy County, (West) Virginia. This document mentions the names of the heirs at law in the matter of the Thomas Burch (deceased) estate. I also conducted a search of the actual images for the Revolutionary War Pension and Land Grant Applications maintained online by Footnote, and I found no application for the veteran Thomas Burch. In both searches, I tried several spelling variations of his name. Additionally, I conducted searches of different family members who would have been eligible to receive the pension. In all cases, I could find no application for the veteran Thomas Burch. However, I did find an application for his brother Benjamin Burch. Author: franciskeenan Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.burch/2334.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I took a look at a website (Access Genealogy) which has posted a short history of the Delaware Indians. I wanted to learn where they were from time to time and whether they had been in the same general geographic areas as was Thomas Burch (born 1751, PGC, Md.). The Delaware Indians occupied lands in eastern Pennsylvania near Philadelphia, southern New York, and most of New Jersey and Delaware. "As the whites, under the sanction of the Iroquois, crowded them out of their ancient homes, the Delaware removed, to the Susquehanna, settling at Wyoming and other points about 1742. They soon crossed the mountains to the headwaters of the Allegheny, the first of them having settled upon that stream in 1724. In 1751, by invitation of the Huron, they began to form settlements in east Ohio, and in a few years the greater part of the Delaware were fixed upon the Muskingum and other streams in east Ohio, together with the Munsee and Mahican, who had accompanied them from the east, being driven out by the same pressure and afterward consolidating with them." So, by the time Thomas Burch was born in 1751, the Delaware Indian tribe had removed to the Ohio territory. This, of course proves nothing and, if Clark was an Indian woman, she may have remained in the east with another tribe. All of this, however, is mere speculation. At first glance, one would assume that Thomas Burch was not near to the Delaware tribe, based upon the information about the tribe's home lands and movements. "About the year 1770, the Delaware received permission from the Miami and Piankishaw to occupy the country between the Ohio and White river(s) south, in Indiana (territory)where at one time they had 6 villages." The Wabash River lay just to the west of the White River and was a major travel route during this era as Fort Vincennes was upon the Wabash. Further north some 120 miles or so from Vincennes was what is now Fountain County, Indiana. However, nothing known to date suggested that Thomas Burch, while in the military, was anywhere but Virginia (West Virginia) and New Jersey. The above quotations were from the history of the Delaware Indians at the website mentioned. The website indicated that the information had been taken from: A HANDBOOK OF AMERICAN INDIANS, 1906. (na) All of this piqued my interest. Why, for example, did Thomas Burch's sons go to Fountain County, Indiana, on the Wabash River? Did Thomas receive a bounty land warrant there as a result of his military service during the Revolutionary War? Also, the surname CLARK is a famous one and General Clark actually campaigned in the area where the Delaware settled in southern Indiana. Did the unknown CLARK woman who allegedly married Thomas Burch take the surname of this famous general and Indian fighter? I add something that you know for the benefit of other readers of these messages about Thomas Burch. Word of mouth, as for example from great grandchildren, is nothing but hearsay, a kind of 'revelation' that requires further documentation as both the writer and the the poster know and are attempting. Such information is known to be most untrustworthy although, at times, it can be proven partially or totally correct. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I performed an internet search on Lydia Melinda Earl. This search revealed she was a prominent genealogist in the 1920s and 1930s. She published in 1932 "Marriages in Fountain County, Indiana, USA 1826-1848" Different parts of her work have been quoted in several other books available online. For me, these facts make her statement about Clark being an Indian more credible. Moreover, if Ms. Earl had spoken to living descendents of Thomas Burch in the 1920s and 1930s, these descendents would have been great grandchildren of Clark. These descendents may have had knowledge of their great grandmother Clark. Additionally, Lola Robertson posted in January of 2000 that Clark was a Delaware Indian, I have contacted Lola Roberson and asked her to lead me to records supporting her statement. His military record and any application for pensions should be reviewed. When Thomas Burch died, his legal residence was Hardy County, Virginia (now West Virginia). He served in the Revolutionary War as a private, Hardy County, Virginia, in Capt. John Winston's Company, 14th Regiment of Foot; also, the 10th Regiment, Virginia, under Colonel Com. Davis. His name was last upon the muster roll at Camp Middlebrook in January of 1776. Since his sons to whom you referred, Jesse and William, were born about 1778 and 1779, respectively, he may have married unknown Clark about 1777. No one has found a record of this marriage to my knowledge. A good search of the records in Hardy County should also be undertaken. Since he married his second wife, Susannah Talbert, on July 26, 1780, in Prince George's County, Maryland, one could assume that the unknown Clark woman may have perished before that date. If this information was unknown to you, perhaps something in it may prove of value to you. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. (A Family Archive Image at the Genealogy.com Website) The information was collected by a Miss Lydia Melinda Earl, Attica,Fountain County, Indiana. She simply stated that Thomas Birch (Burch) married first to ______ Clark, an Indian. There was no documentary evidence supplied for this claim that Clark was an Indian. I have considered this claim to be false because there was no proof supplied. There were many Clark families in Prince George's County, Maryland, that were non-Indian during the time when Thomas Burch lived there. While it is alway possible that Clark was an Indian, I have seen no evidence to support this undocumented claim. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I believe Ira Burch to be the first (or second) son of Admiral Burch and Mary Etta (Marietta) Rathbun. Burch men named their sons after their brothers. Which meant there were a whole lot of men with the same name; of the same generation; but different lines. I would like to known if other researchers of Admiral Burch agree or disagree with my findings. I believe this Admiral Burch was born abt 1775 in Schaghticoke, Rensselaer Co, NY. The son of Thomas Burch and Samantha Unknown. Thomas (also called Theos) Burch and family are listed in the 1800 census of Springfield, Oswego Co, NY not too far from Simeon or Samuel Rathbun. Brothers of Mary Etta Rathbun. Admiral Burch and Mary Etta Rathbun are said to have been married abt 1795 in Williamstown NY but I have not been able to find a record of this. I can not seem to find the Admiral Burch family in the 1800 census.? An A. Burch is found in two 1810 census of NY.? County lines were being changed rapidly in NY at that time. As the frontier opened up families moved westward. The A. Burch listed in Oneida Co, NY is living by brothers and a married sister of Mary Etta Rathbun. I found a Steuben County History book on line that told of an Admiral Burch family living on the road to New Town Point in the late 1790's. It goes on to tell of New Town Point village changing its name to Elmira - town or twp? I have not been able to find that paragraph again. The county boundaries were changed and that area became part of Chumung Co, NY. A Whiteside County IL history book states that Ira Burch was born in Almira, Steuben County, NY. Thomas Burch bought property in Ripley twp, Chautauqua Co, NY in 1816. Admiral Burch is listed as living next to Thomas Burch in the 1820 census of Ripley twp, Chautauqua Co, NY. Admiral bought property in 1826 in Ripley twp, Chaut Co, NY. In 1830 this Admiral Burch and his family was living in Westfield twp, Chaut. Co, NY. In 1833 Admiral Burch and his family migrated to Noble twp, LaPorte Co, IN by Conestoga wagons and oxen. Ira, Peter, Calvin and Henry bought homesteads. Warren R. Burch did not. Admiral and Thomas Burch bought a homestead together. Not sure if that was his father or a son. Armenia Burch m to Daniel Rathbone came from Chaut. Co NY abt a year later. Armenia and Daniel Rathbone went to IA; Ira moved to Garden Plain twp, Whiteside Co, IL; Henry stayed in LaPorte Co, IN; Peter died before 1837 and his wife Amanda bought the homestead; Calvin moved to Marshall Co, IN and then back to Union twp, LaPorte Co, IN; Warren Rodney Burch and family moved to Marshall Co, IN where Admiral Burch lived with him until he died. I do not know when or where Mary Etta died. According to census there were 3 younger girls. I do not know their names, where they lived or who they married. Does any one know who these girls were? According to the 1830 census one was age 10 - 14; and the other two were age 15 - 19. That would make them born abt 1810 - 1820. rkleve@yahoo.com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
