Dear members, I wish to invite you to visit my web site courtesy of Dawn Goodrum. She has created a wonderful site filled with much information about the BURCH family from OUR research and family records. I am happy to share information with any of you that find it useful. Enjoy the site and the music that was my Grandfather Cash Burch's favorite as well as mine. If you find errors and have a record or document to share that proves something different than what I have, I would hope that you would share it with me. Dale W. Shared by S. Martin-Quiatte [email protected] August 31, 2000 J. Henri Burch, 1883 obituary, Louisiana The Monroe [Louisiana] Bulletin Wednesday, August 8, 1883 Page 2, Column 4 Death of J. Henri Burch (New Orleans Picayune [newspaper]) The record of deaths in this city on Sunday, July 29th, embraced several personages. One of them was J. Henri Burch, a colored politician of considerable prominence. A native of Hartford, Conn., and well educated, he adopted the calling of a school teacher, and in 1868 he came to Louisiana where he pursued for a time his profession, under the auspices of the Freedmen's Bureau. He settled at Baton Rouge and conducted a weekly paper, the "Grand Era," and took an active part in politics. In 1870 he was a Republican member of the lower House of the State Legislature from West Baton Rouge parish, serving until 1874, when he became State Senator and served a term. In 1876 he was a Presidential Elector for the State, and took part in the canvass that placed Mr. Hayes in the White House. He subsequently was appointed Keeper of the United States Record at the Custom House, and held that place at the time of his death. The subject of this sketch gained quite a reputation for oratory, and his natural gifts in that direction were of no common order. He occupied a number of important positions in the masonic Order, and at the time of his death was Grand Commander of the Knights Templar. He leaves a wife, who was the widow of the late Lieut. Gov. Oscar J. Dunn. ________ Marian Douglas researching Burches from JELLICO, Tennessee (KY border): Violet, Elmer, and their brother. I'm sorry, in my previous post on my BURCH/HARTLESS lines I DID mention that my Burchs were from Amherst Co., VA - but it was in the "subject line" only. Guess I should have mentioned it again - in the "body" of the message. My BURCH/HARTLESS family were from Amherst, Rockbridge and surrounding counties of VA. Thanks again. Pam [email protected]

She m. c. 1800-03 in NY Dr. Isaac Finch.
Hello to all Burch-researchers. My Burch family are proving difficult to trace. I am hoping the some one of you will be able to help me. My Greatgrandma ROSE LEE BURCH's father's name was WILLIAM BURCH. He was born abt. 1864. Her mother was a JENNIE ROBERTS born abt. the same year. WILLIAM BURCH'S mother was a LEANNA F. BURCH born about 1844. LEANNA was known by the name HARTLESS as a child and by 1870 was using the BURCH name. She had three BURCH boys by this time, William being the oldest. In 1881 LEANNA used the HARTLESS name when she married a BEVERLY. I assumed that she had first been married to a BURCH - but was unable to uncover a marriage record for her in Amherst or any of the surrounding counties between 1860 and 1870. I have since learned that her mother "M. L. Hartless" or MARY LOUISE was a BURCH when Leanna was born and then in 1855 married a BENJAMIN HARTLESS. MARY LOUISE was born about 1822 according to the census reports. Does anyone have a record of this MARY LOUISE BURCH? Would you know if she was born a BURCH or if she married first to a BURCH before she married BENJAMIN HARTLESS when she was already 33. I have found her on the Census reports for Amherst Co., VA as early as 1850. I understand that she died in Amherst Co., in about 1899. Thank you, Pam [email protected]
