The elder Richard Burch of Caswell and Person counties in NC is said to have been born 22 Feb 1732 (some say 1729?). Does anyone know the source of the date? His birth place is usually given as King & Queen Co., Va. What is the evidence for this birthplace? Sometimes his wife's name is given as Jane or Janey. What is the evidence for her name? Was there any connection between this Richard Burch and an older Richard Burch (with a wife named Janey) who lived in Brunswick Co., Va. and had children born from circa 1721 including an apparent son, Richard?
Please reply if you have information on any of these Burch families of NC. Please put name and county in subject line so that we all may have a record of these families! Good Luck. And to see just whom In this home did live. I looked all about A strange sight I did see. No tinsel, no presents, Not even a tree. No stocking by the mantle, Just boots filled with sand. On the wall hung pictures Of far distant lands. With medals and badges, Awards of all kinds, A sober thought Came through my mind. For this house was different, It was dark and dreary, I found the home of a soldier, Once I could see clearly. The soldier lay sleeping, Silent, alone, Curled up on the floor In this one bedroom home. The face was so gentle, The room in such disorder, Not how I pictured A United States Soldier. Was this the hero Of whom I'd just read? Curled up on a Poncho, The floor for a bed? I realized the families That I saw this night, Owed their lives to these soldiers Who were willing to fight. Soon round the world, The children would play, And grownup would celebrate A bright Christmas Day. They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year, Because of the soldiers, Like the one lying here. I couldn't help wonder How many lay alone, On a cold Christmas Eve In a land far from home. The very thought Brought a tear to my eye, I dropped to my knees And started to Cry. The soldier awakened And I heard a rough voice, "Santa don't cry, This life is my choice." The solider rolled over And drifted to sleep, I couldn't control it, I continued to weep. I kept watch for hours, So silent and still And we both shivered >From the cold night's chill. I didn't want to leave On that cold, dark, night, This guardian of Honor So willing to fight. I couldn¹t for the life of me figure out why some people said that James was born about 1790 and others said he was born about 1818.... How could I have been so blind? Anyway, it would appear that James Burch HARRELL named his children after their aunts and uncles, thus further complicating the matter. As best as I can tell, James HARRELL and Mary BURCH had the four children you mentioned, and then James Burch HARRELL had three of his own: Joseph (b. abt 1840), m. Elinor PETTIGREW Elizabeth T(homas?) (1 Mar 1842-12 Apr 1904), m.1865 Albert A. MYERS Sarah Perkins (b. abt 1844), m. Samuel BLACKWELL Can anyone confirm or deny this? And while we¹re at it, who was the mother of James Burch HARRELL¹s children, since it obviously wasn¹t Mary BURCH? Hello All, I've never given any thought about our Illinois BURCH/HARRELL connection being associated with the NC families, but I'm starting to see even more similarities here. My grandparents were Enoch Arden BURCH (born 1867 in IL) and Anna Marie FUCHS (born 1871 in IL). They married in MO, and had 11 children there, one of which was Margaretta BURCH (born 1901 in MO) who married Rollie HARRELL ( born 1896 in IL). I have a 1922 obituary notice for my grandmother's mother, Phillipina FUCHS, that mentions that her daughter, Anna Marie BURCH is living in NC. I know that my grandparents lived most of their lives in MO, and moved to FL when he retired from the RR about 1924, but have never heard of any NC connection until this. Now John FOX, mentions his BURCH/HARRELL connection in NC. I have no information that any of our FUCHS went to NC from IL, but FOX is a common translation of FUCHS. Does anything look familiar ?? As we haven't been able to determine who Enoch Arden BURCH's parents were, any clues will be greatly appreciated. Hey, Art. Doesn¹t surprise me a bit. The HARRELLs are notorious for marrying into the same family over and over and over again. For example, my 4g-grandfather MYERS married Mary Lewis HARRELL (daughter of Lewis HARRELL Sr.), my 3g-grandfather MYERS married Sarah Rebecca HARRELL (granddaughter of Lewis HARRELL Sr.), and my gg-grandfather MYERS married Elizabeth T. HARRELL (also granddaughter of Lewis HARRELL Sr.). I¹m related to myself so many ways, I could give myself a transfusion! So how does this relate to the BURCHes? Well, in addition to my 3g-grandparents.... Reuben Flournoy BURCH m. Millie Ann HARRELL in 1867 (Pulaski co, Georgia). Their son, Matthew Daniel BURCH, married Millie Ann Barbara HARRELL in 1891 (Dodge co, Georgia). Also: Josiah Timmons HARRELL m. Elizabeth Ann BURCH in 1822. Willis Daniel HARRELL m. Permelia BURCH in 1873 (probably Dodge co, GA). Asa Bryant HARRELL married Eliza BURCH in 1875. William Steelie BURCH m. Bedia Ann HARRELL abt 1890 (probably Dodge co, GA). J. Asa HARRELL m. Margaret BURCH abt 1900. Benjamin Levi HARRELL m. Henrietta Jane BURCH in 1904 (Dodge co, GA). Henry Herman BURCH m. Jeanette HARRELL abt 1920. John Calloway HARRELL m. Hattie E. BURCH in 1921 (Dodge co, GA). Michael Harris BURCH m. Mary Lou HARRELL in 1924 (Dodge co, GA). Although most of these relatives are somewhat distant, I count twelve HARRELL/BURCH marriages in my family. (I think that makes my point.) ;) So.... Do Rollie and Margaretta make 13? Let¹s get some ancestry on them! I am searching for the ancestors of my 3rd great-grandmother, Luvina Burch (Mrs. Charles Shaver), who was born September 19th or 24th, 1801 in New York state, and died July 17, 1845 in or near Plymouth, Richland County, Ohio. Her husband's family (the Shavers) had lived in Ulster County, New York and moved to Cayuga County, New York by the 1820's. It is probably here that Luvina Burch met and married Charles Shaver since their first child, Charlotte, was born about December 24, 1819. Luvina and Charles had 9 other children, some being born in Plymouth, Ohio: Hannah (born Jan. 2, 1822); Franklin (born about Dec. 6, 1823); Delilah Shaver Clark (born about 1829); Effalina Shaver Clark (born Oct.18, 1832); Louvina Shaver Bevier Clark (born Nov. 2, 1834); John (born after March 10, 1835); Calista Shaver Packer; Jane Shaver Barnes; and Mary Shaver Castor. There was a David Burch family living in Cayuga County, NY about 1816 who had a daughter named "Lavinia" with a different married name, according to his will, but it doesn't appear to be the same person. Thank you for any help in locating the parents and family of Luvina Burch Shaver. Sincerely, Robert Heisler [email protected]
