I am trying to find out if Edward C. Bunker, b. New York City, NY 9 Oct 1830 and E.E. Bunker, Brigadier General, 1864 are the same person. There is correspondence with E.E. Bunker in 1864 (War of the Rebellion, Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, Part 1 - Reports, Correspondence, etc. pub. 1893) that indicates that he was in charge of the militia from Harrison, Taylor and Marion Counties at that time. There are no West Virginia state Civil War records listing E.E. Bunker. Edward C. Bunker appears in the 1850 census in Preston Co., VA in the household of his uncle Israel Baldwin. He came to VA as a young man with his uncle and guardian Israel Baldwin. He married Delia Hagans in 1851. In 1860 he was with his wife, Delia in Morgantown. He became a lawyer, prosecuting attorney and judge. From 1860 through 1863 he was prosecuting attorney for Monongalia Co., living in Morgantown. In 1863-64 he was a state senator. He was ill as a young man and did not complete his education but later read for the law. He died 24 Nov 1867. We have a record of two children: Harrison and Belle. Belle was said to have died young but Delia is in the household of John B. and Kate B. Payne in Kingwood, Preston Co., West Virginia in 1880. She is listed as a widow and mother-in-law. Perhaps there was another daughter named Kate or Kate B. and Belle were the same. Harrison is not found in the 1880 census so he perhaps died young. What I am trying to do is just connect the Brig. Gen of the militia with a known Bunker. Edward C. Bunker was the only Bunker living in West Virginia or Virginia at the time. I believe they are the same person but can find nothing about Edward that indicates he served with the militia. Do you have any idea where I might look to find more about this? I live in AZ so it is a bit difficult to get to West Virginia to do research. Bette Bunker Richards, Historian, Bunker Family Assn. http://www.bunkerfamilyassn.org
