The USA public library listings are extensive and arranged by region. http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/Libweb/ Many of the US libraries have departments and email addresses for local history, especially if the library is in a smaller town. I know that some libraries' genealogy depts. have surname files for some of the prominent families that live/d in the area. If you aren't in a position to go ask, this gives long-distance genealogists mail and sometimes email access to libraries they can't visit.
