I wonder whether the guilty party on the Bunker tree is me. I have "used" Ancestry for years, but access it rarely. I know that I put some Bunkers on. Mea culpa. (Incidentally, I did not put myself on - someone else did.) -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Bette Bunker Richards via Sent: Saturday, December 19, 2015 12:49 PM To: Penny Lithgow Briggs Cc: [email protected] Subject: Re: [BUNKER] good newsletter It seems Ancestry wants you to keep your family tree on their site and every time you access it, they will make a suggestion for a possible connection. That sounds ok for a family tree with a couple hundred or less people but the BFA database has about 90,000 names in it and several different unconnected branches of Bunkers. Of course, if your only access to your family tree is to go online to Ancestry you have to keep your membership dues paid forever. Membership in Ancestry is expensive. It may be time to shift to using other sources since many of them are much cheaper, have the same data and do not require that you keep your tree online. Many offer a free online site to store your small tree but it is usually limited to less than 500 names. I have a tree that contains only the people directly related to me and it contains 5,779 names. When I go on Ancestry to search right now, it shows a Bunker family tree. This tree has nothing to do with me and is NOT one that I put on there. I am wondering if every time I access Ancestry under the new system I am going to have to go through this tree. I am also wondering if I would be able to make changes on it or if only one person can do that. When the change comes, I will report what happens to me. The business model assumption is that the loss in members who hate the new system will be greatly overcome by those who put their tree on the site and then have to keep their membership in order to have any access to it. There is also some concern over whether those who now have their data on Family Tree Make with a connection to Ancestry will lose everything to the online site. We shall see.
