Dear All, Is there anyone out there , presumably in the United Kingdom who is descended from any of the 4 eldest sons of George Bunker and Harriett Brandon? They all married in Tottenham , London between 1885 and 1892. The 1901 census has yielded the children of George and Alfred but , of course , only in "outline" form ; Children of John and James have not yet been found . But what about their children and their children's children and so on . Where are my cousins? Details are George Albert b Thame , Oxfordshire 5 Ap 1864 m Jane Elizabeth Bangs on 12 Ap 1885 ( George, illegitimate birth cert. shows no father.) John b 15 July 1866,at Thame , d 17 May 1902 ( the only death I know) m Harriet Mason on 5 Feb 1888; Alfred b 20 Oct 1869 at Thame m Ada Mary Thomas on 29 May 1889 ; James Samuel b Camberwell , London on 5 Dec 1872 m Lauretta? (difficult to read on marriage certificate ) Rose Aldridge on 12 May 1892. Me? I'm the grandson of the 5th son Albert Edward b 1877 but naturally I have full details on him and his descendents. Does anyone have access to August 1998 issue of The Bunker Banner for an account on George Bunker (N-1) and his parentage.?? I would pay for copies and postage. Thanks. Donna Carpenter 4375 Little Falls Rd Huntingtown MD 20639
Several people were interested in the Bunker/Bancker connection so I am sending the pedigrees of the couple that married. I am including only the males and only the birth year for the sake of space. However, I will be happy to provide more detailed information for anyone that connects. William Henry Bunker b. 28 Dec 1845, Binghamton, NY m. 15 Dec 1875, Luella M. Bunker b. 8 Apr 1854, East Troy, WI. William's ancestors were: George Henry Bunker b. 1820, Broome co., NY Henry Bonker, b. 1794, New Jersey John Bonker, b. 1770 Laurens Bancker, b. 1728, NY Rombout Bancker, b. 1704, NY Laurens Bancker, b. c. 1653 Holland Mattys Bancker, b. 1623, Holland Luella's ancestors were: Charles C. Bunker, b. 1822, DeRuyter, NY Shubael Bunker, b. 1796, Claverak, NY Francis Bunker, b. 1758, Nantucket, MA Shubael Bunker, b. 1731, Nantucket, MA Zachariah Bunker, b. c. 1700 Nantucket, MA Jonathan Bunker, b. 1674/75 Nantucket, MA William Bunker, b. c. 1648, Tingrith, Bedfordshire, England George Bunker, b. 1621, Tingrith, Bedfordshire, England Timothy Bunker, b. 1578, Tingrith, Bedfordshire, England Oliver Bunker, b. 1540, Tingrith, Bedforshire, England William Bunker b. 1500, Tingrith, Bedfordshire, England Roger Buncker, b. 1470, probably Tingrith, Bedfordshire, England. He died there. Sometimes, the English spelled the name Buncker. You can see that the Bancker name has evolved into Bunker. Bancker in Dutch sounds much like Bunker. Bette
I was just working on the Nantucket Bunker line and at the same time working on the descendants of Laurens Bancker from Holland who later changed their name to Bunker. I found that the Nantucket and Dutch line intermarried. William Henry Bunker (RN18390, U805), son of George Henry Bunker & Betsey Wheeler m. Luella Mary Bunker (RN18389, N252), dau of Charles C. Bunker and Mary Heimbach. Anyone who is interested in more information about this family, please contact me. Bette
In the past I have had many queries about Bunkers that I was not able to answer just because the first name was so common. For instance looking for John Bunker's will get me about 1,000 names and that is too many to look at. Now I have learned how to search the database for even the John's and George's with just a little more information. If you wanted to know if we have a John Bunker in Michigan in the 1800's I can now find him. Or if you want to know if we have any Bunkers in Topeka, Kansas, I can find that too. Or if you want to know if we have a Dr. John Bunker, I can find him too if we entered the Dr. somewhere in the record. If any one has previously asked us to look someone up and we have not been able to find them please contact me again and I will try with this new search method. Maybe we can find your missing ancestor now. Bette

Recently Bette Richards notified us on this site about the MA bill regarding cutting off access to their Vital Records. At the same time, California was undergoing the same problem. At that time, genealogy societies rallied around but could not kill the bill - instead it was passed saying just that, literally, it said nothing but that there would be "further amendments". Now the amendments are being added and passed - and very quickly. I am going to try to attach to this message a message from one of the concerned genealogists that should give you up t date information, along with (1) a link to a petition that you can sign (I did) and (2) the various Senators, their districts and email address where possible. I hope you agree that we should take action on this - but it must be done immediately. Mary-Gene Page BFA P.S. I'll forward the message rather than try to attach it.
In a message dated 8/22/2002 8:56:13 PM Central Daylight Time, betterichs@earthlink.net writes: Now isn't that something? We do not even have a marriage for Alfred Tennyson. Just his birth and the fact that he died in Buchanan. Any information that you have would be appreciated. And please continue to send it to the list. It might elicit more info from others. Also, I will tell Gil to keep an eye on it as new info that should be published in the Banner. Sure appreciate it. Alfred Tennyson Bunker, b. 29 September 1878, Buchanan, Berrien, Michigan; d. 16 August 1947, Buchanan, Berrien, Michigan, buried Oak Ridge Cemetery in Buchanan; married 28 May 1902. Alta May Greswold, b. 13 Aug. 1880, Buchanan, Berrien, Michigan; d. 26 December 1969, buried Oak Ridge Cemetery in Buchanan. Tenny and Alta lived at 113 Charles Ct. in Buchanan, and Samuel lived with them there at the time of his death 22 December 1935. This was right across the street from my maternal grandparents' house and about three houses up from my paternal grandparents' house in the 1950s and '60s when I was growing up. Alta still lived there then and I believe she was blind or very nearly so, if I'm remember the right lady. I knew she was "some pigtail relation to us," but did not ever really meet her. I was just home in Buchanan the last couple of weeks and I took some pictures of various Bunker gravestones. I don't have the pictures developed yet, so I don't know if they came out very well or not. I may be able to scan them in if they are OK, and then I could email them to you or the BFA if anyone is interested. My mother has the wedding fan carried by Hannah Jane Graham at her wedding to Orlando Bunker 1 March 1857 in Buchanan. It is framed and on her living room wall, and I have a photo of it as well. I also have copies of quite a few supporting documents for Buchanan Bunkers, including birth, death and marriage certificates, censuses, obituaries and various newspaper articles. Much of this information has been very generously shared with me by a lady in Albion, Michigan who is married to a Bunker descendant. I was also able to meet her in person while home this month--another benefit of researching my family history! Looks like the storms have missed us so far tonight, but Omaha is getting hit pretty hard. We are still under a watch and there's activity both north and south of us, so we may get something yet. Cubs just lost again, so I guess it's time to go to bed. Kathy Crapo Lincoln, Nebraska
Followup to yesterday's info on George A. Bunker: It was not his middle name that was Archmedia--that was Hiram A. I do not have a full middle name for George A. In addition, I suspect but have no evidence, that the two Keith E. Bunker marriages you listed are probably those of Keith Bunker the son of Alfred Tennyson (Tenny) Bunker and Alta May Greswold, the grandson of Samuel Sylvester Bunker and Louisa DeLambert, and the great-grandson of Abraham Hall Bunker and Lura McNall. My mother (in Buchanan, Michigan) said Tenny did have a son Keith, and she believed that he was no longer living. We did finally get some rain last night--about 3.5 inches in this area, which is the most at one time in over a year, and for which we are VERY grateful. We have been on watering restrictions most of the summer and everything is brown and dried up. And whatever didn't burn up is being eaten up by the grasshoppers! I never did hear the end of the Cubs game since I had to turn off my computer during the lightning storm, but they were behind as usual ;-) Again, Bette, I apologize that you will probably get two copies of this message, as I will copy to the Bunker list in case any body else is interested. I know the Bunker Family Association does not pursue females married into the Bunker line, but if anybody else out there has any info on the Lura McNall mentioned above as the wife of Abraham Hall Bunker, I would love to hear from you. Hi, Bette. Here are a few facts on some of the Bunkers you listed. If you want more details and documentation, please let me know. George A. and Samuel G. Bunker were brothers, the sixth and seventh children, respectively, of Orlando (sometimes spelled Orlondo) L. Bunker and Hannah Jane Graham. George A. (I believe his middle name is Archmedia, but cannot get to my Legacy program right now to check as I'm listening to the Cubs via Real Audio, and the programs conflict ;-) Bunker was born 10 February 1874 in Buchanan, Berrien, Michigan. He died 9 August 1938 at Berrien County Hospital, Berrien County, Michigan, and was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Buchanan, Berrien, Michigan. George A. married (1) Edna O. Boyd 25 December 1895 at the home of brother Guy L. Bunker in Buchanan, Berrien, Michigan. They reportedly divorced in December of 1898, although I have no documentation on this at present. George A. married (2) Emma Caroline Johnson 8 April 1901 in St. Joseph, Berrien, Michigan. Emma was born 26 November 1879 in Germany, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Johnson, and died 18 September 1951 at Pawating Hospital, Niles, Berrien, Michigan, with burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Buchanan, Berrien, Michigan. Children born to George A. & Emma C. (Johnson) Bunker were stillborn son George Bunker, Jr., 17 November 1909, and daughter Cecil Alice Bunker, 11 January 1914, who died four days later on the 15th. Your information implies that George A. and Emma C. were divorced at some point after 1909, and apparently remarried in St. Joseph County, Indiana in 1929. I have no information on either of these last two events, and neither event is mentioned in their obituaries. I would be interested in any details you might have to this end. Samuel Graham Bunker was born 9 August 1876 in Buchanan, Berrien, Michigan, and died 8 March 1947 in South Bend, St. Joseph, Indiana, with burial in South Bend's Riverview Cemetery. Samuel Graham Bunker married (1) Maud Ethel Ireland in October 1901, St. Joseph Co., Indiana. Maud was reportedly born about 1881 in Scotland, although I have no documentation to this fact. Three sons were born to this marriage: Howard C. Bunker, 26 April 1905; James R. Bunker, 7 March 1907; and Charles Frederick Bunker, 22 January 1909. I have no information on whether Maud died or they were divorced after the 1909 birth. Samuel Graham Bunker married (2) Ethel Dickens. I have the marriage year as 1938, as listed in her obituary, which differs from your listing of 1935. I would be interested in details of your documentation to verify this difference. Ethel was born 12 March 1888 in Wisconsin to Mr. and Mrs. Riley Dickens. She died 20 January 1949 at her brother's home in Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa, and was buried in Riverview Cemetery in South Bend, St. Joseph, Indiana. I do not list any children from this marriage. I may have additional information on others listed in your email, but I'm not sure--and it's starting to thunder and lightning so I should get off my computer so I don't lose another modem! I will be glad to exchange additional information with you about the above and to provide copies of what I have if you are interested. I have more information on Orlando and Hannah Jane Bunker and descendants as they were my great-great-grandparents. Hope this helps. I will send this both directly to you and to the list--if I remember ;-) Kathy Crapo Lincoln, NE

We are starting a Bunker surname project testing the DNA of males to see if they are related. The Y chromosome follows down the male line intact from father to son for about 500 generations. By testing the Y chromosome you can see if you are related to another Bunker male and how far back your most recent common ancestor is. The records of the ancestors of James Bunker of Dover, NH and Devonshire, England have not been found. We do not know if he was related to the two George Bunkers that came to the United States in the 1600's. Through DNA testing we can find out. Both the George's descend from Roger Bunker of Tingrith, England, in the 1400's. If we get two descendants of Roger and two descendants of James tested we can establish a DNA fingerprint for those Bunker families. By comparing the DNA of a descendant of Roger with one of James' descendants we would be able to see if they are related. If we do this as a group of at least 6 men, the cost is $99 plus postage for the test. The company sends a test kit with cotton swabs in it. The man rubs the cotton swabs inside his cheek, puts them in an envelope and mails them back. The group administrator receives the results, which are put in the databank and sent to the participant. It is not planned at this time to reveal the specific markers identified to anyone except the administrator and the individual participant. However, if someone in the future wishes to have their DNA tested we will compare it with our established lines and confirm or deny a relationship with our Bunkers. This is fascinating. Imagine being assured that you are related to other Bunkers all over the world. Imagine that you are adopted and do not know for sure if you are a Bunker until we can tell you that your DNA matches ours. It is possible to determine how many generations back your most recent common ancestor is. An article should be appearing in the Bunker Banner giving more information about this project. If any male born with the name of Bunker wishes to participate in this test, please contact me. For information about the organization that will be doing the testing go to their website <http://www.familytreedna.com> I spoke personally with the owner of this company at the FGS conference and have been in contact with him since. Let me know if you are interested or have a male member in your family that would be interested. Bette
It is very difficult to trace our Indian ancestors. Prior to 1935, Indian tribes were not required to keep records. Indians did not become US citizens until June 30, 1924. Prior to 1900 it was likely that the Indian you are looking for did not have a surname and a man named Running Elk would have sons named Red Feather, Whirlwind Horse, He Dog, etc. and none of the grandsons would have the same name either. In the original 13 states, the records are usually kept in the State archives as those tribes did not have treaties with the United States. Sometimes the only records are in the mission church headquarters and may not be kept in the church on the reservation. For those of you tracing Native Americans you might find some help at <http://www.indianscoutbooks.com> When I was at the FGS conference I took the opportunity to look through several of their publications and found them to be very good. They have vital records and census rolls for several tribes. The census rolls are not the same as either state or federal census. These were rolls taken to determine entitlement to treaty benefits. Aside from going directly to the tribal census offices, this is the best source I have found so far for Indian records. Bette
