    3. I am pleased to report that we have successfully moved the Bunker Family Association web site to a new Internet service provider hosting web sites. The physical location is here in Medford, Oregon, so I will have easy access to the site if there is a problem I can't solve over the Internet. The website address is as follows: http://www.bunkerfamilyassn.org/index.html. The site is basically the same as it was before the physical move of files from one ISP to another. I will be updating a few pages over the next week or so as I discovered a few links that are no longer valid. But I have two other sites to move, so the updates may take a bit longer than I would like. In the meantime, if any of you have trouble with any of the pages or links, please send me an e-mail and advise me of the problem. Thanks for your patience in this move. 3. Effective December 1, 2002, the internet service provider for the Bunker Family Association's web site is closing operations. As webmaster for the site, I will be working to move the site to another provider. The Bunker-L mailing list at rootsweb is not affected. Please bear with me as I work to move the site. We had short notice, so it may be a few days before it's operational again. Also, my personal web will have to be moved. So, I've a busy few days ahead of me. Douglas G. 1. identity theft
    2. Bette Richards
    3. The govt. just made an arrest in the biggest identity theft in history. One guy all by himself got access to the big credit reporting agencies, like Equifax, etc., got credit reports and sold them on the street to people who used the information on them to get duplicate credit cards, access to ATM's, additional credit accounts, bank accounts, etc. and stole millions of dollars. Credit reporting agencies get information about you every day even without your permission and even when you have not requested credit. They get information that includes your social security number, bank account numbers, credit card numbers, employer, mortgage company, home address, and even your medical history. What is amazing is that the law allows companies to get a credit report without your permission. Every time you get one of those letters that say you have been pre-approved for credit, that company has gotten a credit report on you without your permission. We do not need vital records closed to the public. We need laws that protect us from credit reporting agencies! And prohibit businesses from getting credit reports on us without our written permission. Do you think Congress will ever pass laws like that? The state legislatures have rushed to "protect" us from identity theft by closing or restricting access to vital records when there has never been a case of identity theft by someone using vital records. Businesses get access to anything they want any time they want. Bette

    1. Thanksgiving
    2. Bette Richards
    3. Happy Thanksgiving to all the Americans on this list. I am overjoyed that I will have at least one of my kids to celebrate with as I spent several years with none living any where near me. My sister and mother live in MN, my father and step-mother in CA, my brother in the Philippines, my oldest daughter in Germany, the middle daughter in Florida and the youngest in Denver while I live in Arizona. Only my son and his wife live here in Tucson and nicely enough Lisa will be doing most of the cooking this year. Yay! For some real facts about the first Thanksgiving in Plymouth, MA go to <http://www.plimoth.org/Library/Thanksgiving/firstT.htm> There are lots and lots of sites but this is a really good one. In PLYMOUTH COLONY, ITS HISTORY & PEOPLE 1620-1691 by Eugene Aubrey Stratton, the author quotes Edward Winslow as follows: "Our harvest being gotten in, our Governour sent foure men on fowling, that we might after a more speciall manner rejoyce together, after we had gathered the fruit of our labours; they foure in one day killed as much fowle, as with a little help beside, served the Company almost a weeke, at which time amongst other Recreations, we exercised our Armes, many of the Indians coming amongst us, and amongst the rest their greatest King Massasoyt, with some nintie men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five Deere, which they brought to the Plantation and bestowed on our Governour, and upon the Captaine, and others. And although it be not alwayes so plentiful, as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodnesse of God, we are so farre from want, that we often wish you partakers of our plentie." Bette

    3. Dick Eastman reviews in his newsletter this week the hand held computer and its use in genealogical research. A new one is out that only costs $199 and it looks good. He also reviews the program that is doing the Bunker DNA surname project, Family Tree DNA, and explains some of the uses of DNA research in genealogy. Go to <http://www.RootsForum.com/newsletter> and click on standard edition. This is free. You can then click on individual articles, read and copy them if you like. Bette

    1. Joseph S. Bunker
    2. Bette Richards
    3. Joseph S. Bunker, (RN25601) b. about 1819 in Tennessee might possibly be the son of Jesse Forester Bunker of McMinn Co., TN. Dose anyone have any more information about this? Joseph S. seems to have been confused with his son Joseph S. b. c. 1844-47 in TN (RN25752). Joseph the younger is listed in the 1880 census in Gregory, Conway Co., AR, with his wife Sarah A. age 32, b. TN and their children, Leander M, age 10, b. AR, Mary B. age 7, b. AR and Nancy E. age 6 months b. AR. I believe Sarah A. is Sarah A. Martin who married Joseph S. Bunker 1 Aug 1867 in Conway Co., AR. Bette

If you want to learn more about Slapton, Devon, England from which James Bunker may have come, the village has a website complete with a picture of the church and cemetery. <http://www.slapton.org> This is really a good site with lots of pictures of houses, B & B's, restaurants, etc. It even has games and lessons on how to build a website. 1. All us Bunkers
    2. Bette Richards
    3. Check out this site to see how many people in the US share your name. Bunkers make up approximately .003 of the population and rank 4117 in the list of surnames. I checked some more of my ancestors and found one that ranked 44,000 + and another that was the 12th most common name in America. <http://www.census.gov/genealogy/www/freqnames.html> To determine the number of people with the name living in the US in 2000, multiply the percentage (.003) by the total population (281,421,906). To check out the frequency of names in England <http://www.taliesin-arlein.net/names/search.php> This site tells you how to figure out the number of people living in England with the name today and also the number who have been recorded since the 1600's. Very interesting site. If you are researching your ancestors and find that they have a very common name like one of mine, you will see why you may be having so much trouble sorting them out. However, even if there is any extremely unusual name with few people, that does not mean they are all related. Spellings have changed over the years and names that sounded similar may now be the same as another. Then again, you may find a name like Küster which is now spelled Kester, Kuester, Kuster, Kister, Custer, Caster and about 20 more different ways. And they all descended from the same person. Isn't genealogy fun? Bette

    3. You must forgive me. I spent the weekend in Phoenix at the NASCAR races and must have fried my brains as well as my skin. 1. credit cards and such
    2. Bette Richards
    3. I frequently send out links on this list that I obtain from Dick Eastman's newsletter. In the latest newsletter (the free one) there is an article about using credit cards on the computer and elsewhere that many of you may find interesting. You might be amazed too. Another link I found interesting was <http://www.stlcathcem.com/default.aspx> where there is a list of burials in the St. Louis cemeteries. Knowing that some of my husband's ancestors must be buried there, I searched for Richard (his last name) and got lots of hits because it picked out all the people with the first name of Richard too. However, it also showed burials in 1700, which is something you do not find often. Click on burial search on the right side of the page if you are looking for St. Louis burials. Remember, this was a stopping off place for people going West in the 1800's and there is a possibly that a lost ancestor died on the way and is buried in one of these cemeteries. Good hunting. Bette

    2. Douglas Detling
    3. Bette Richards, list member and Bunker Family Association historian, sent a message a day or so ago suggesting folks visit the Bunker Family Association's web site (http://www.BunkerFamilyAssn.org/index.html). This morning I updated the site to incorporate an update from Bette about our Bunker DNA project. See http://www.BunkerFamilyAssn.org/surname_project.html. Also I have added to the links page (http://www.BunkerFamilyAssn.org/blink.html) a link to the Edward Bunker Family Association web site. Edward Bunker is a Dover branch descendant, and one of the list members was seeking out that site and unable to find it. If you want to go there directly, visit http://www.bunker.org. As always, if any list members discover information that should be included on the web site, especially links to other pages related to the family, please mention them in a message to the list or e-mail me directly. Thanks. Douglas G. Detling (D15-II) - Bunker Family Association web site/e-mail coordinator ddetling@greencity.org or ddetling@charter.net
