Kipp sent me this one on the 1901 Canada census http://www.archives.ca/02/02012202_e.html The feds have opened up a bunch of databases at http://www.archives.gov/aad/ click on search on the left side of the page to access them. Here there are thousands of Irish immigration records, plus lots of other things. Do you want Australian military? http://naa.gov.au/the_collection/family_history/armed_services.html On this one go back to the collection tab on the top and search the whole thing. Lots of good Australian stuff. Here's one with Scottish wills, etc. http://www.scottishdocuments.com/ Once you find the will you want then you can order a copy if it is available. Bette
Hi all: I have recently received a scan of a photo of Davis B. Clair, his spouse Phoebe E. Crosby, and their four children (photo circa 1900). For those who read this list who are desc. of Hollis M. Bunker and Hannah Crosby, Phoebe was Hannah's sister. For those who read this list who are desc. of Hiram F. Bunker and Mary Clair, Davis was Mary's brother. If interested, get back to me via e-mail and I'll foreard you a jpg file. Best regards H.A. Here is a site with biographies and some pictures of Wisconsin residents. Search on last names alone as well as first and last or just the first name alone. http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/wni/ Very interesting database. When you find something you can order a copy of it for $ but it may be just what you need. I found 22 records for Bunkers dating back to 1858, earlier than I suspected there were Bunkers in the state. Bette
Don sent this to me. Thought I would share. Just for your interest, and you may want to inform others, Portsmouth is nearly equidistant from Manchester, NH, Portland, ME and Boston, MA. Boston ahs the advantage of a bus service that runs from Logan to Pease (the old Air Force base). So, if people would like to compare prices they might want to try for all three - the drive is about the same. Bette
The NY Daily Times reported 3 Jan 1883 that there was a fire the previous day at the Union Steam Mill in Concord, NH. The Steam Mill was a large two-story wooden building and the upper story was occupied by Andrew Bunker, a manufacturer of doors, sashes, and blinds. Does anyone know which Andrew Bunker this was? We have several possibilities. Bette
Hello cousins, This is a test msg for Bette. The rest of you may disregard gil
I am doing my usual search for cheaper air fares to go to NH in June. the cheapest I could find was from Tucson, AZ to Boston, MA (90 miles from Portsmouth) for $409. I tried http://www.cheaptickets.com and could save $30. I went to http://www.priceline.com and asked to buy a ticket for $250. I got one. With the taxes, etc. the total cost comes to $285 so I saved $124. Now from Tucson to the east coast, I will have to change flights once or twice no matter how much I pay for a ticket. I got on the same airline I would have taken anyway, with the same number of transfers and saved $124. I just thought I would let you know if you don't care what time of day you fly. If you use price line first check out the cost of tickets from your destination. Then offer $150 less than the cheapest you can find. It always works for me. Bette
Let's try sending this again. Bette -----Original Message----- From: Bette Richards [mailto:betterichs@earthlink.net] Sent: Monday, March 03, 2003 4:41 PM To: Bunker Subject: conferences Dick Eastman has given me some new ideas as usual. There is going to be an online genealogical conference. You can learn a lot about genealogy and get a lot of useful sources by attending these conferences but with air fare, hotel and conference it can be really expensive. Now there is going to be one online. It is not free but considerably less expensive than one in "brick and mortar" as Dick puts it. http://familyhistoryradio.com/fhr_sp/egeninfo.php? and click on egen conference on the left side of the page. Dick also attended a genealogy conference in London last year that was cheaper overall than those he attended in the US, in spite of the internaitonal air fare. http://sog.org.uk/events/fair.html Now that is one I would like to attend and at the same time meet all the British contacts I email all the time. One of these days. For the Aussie's here is on in Australia http://RootsForum.com/shorturl/australasian Dick also recommends a new site that handles GEDCOMS on the web. It sounds very interesting and useful. Http://ged-it.pedleyonline.com This moves any GEDCOM on any URL to the site where you can search it at leisure. You do not have to download it to your computer and use up a lot of space. Try the demonstrations. Bette

Cherice: Thank you for the information. I have found Joseph H. Bunker (RN21747) and Mary A. Coyne, unconnected; Edward (we have him as Elwood and son of Rueben) (RN18732) who are from the Nantucket branch; and Harry Bunker (RN20526) and Roxie Wells who are unconnected. I am sending this to the list to see if anyone can provide more information about any of these people. I would love to have copies of the death certificates for the BFA files. What I do is copy them and attach them to the files so that if anyone searching that family want a copy, I can send them one. If you would like to send me these I will enter them into the database. To see the distribution and migration of people of your surname in the census records try these two sites: http://www.last-names.net and http://www.hamrick.com/names For the last one click on all years and watch the map change from one census to the next. Pretty cool. This can also help you eliminate places where your ancestors quite probably did not live and save you wasted research time in those areas. I'm sure most of you know that you can just go to MSN.com and other sites and click on white pages or yellow pages for phone numbers in the U.S. but there are online phone books for other countries too. Canada http://www.Canada411.com Australia http://www.whitepages.com.au New Zealand http://www.whitepages.co.nz South Africa http://196.15.219.249/ UK has several sites, try http://BT.com and click on directory enquiries on the right side of the page. http://192.com you have to register for and get only 5 free searches per month but you also get the electoral roll. Illinois has some pretty good records on line. I was all excited because many of my ancestors were from there. Unfortunately, Stephenson Co. is not very well represented. However, lots of other Bunkers are listed and lots of different databases. http://www.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/databases.html Bette
9 Oct 1908 reported in the Dothan Eagle, Alabama: E. C. Bunker has accepted a position with the Abberville light plant and will begin his duties there next week. This is the only news report of a Bunker in Alabama but I have no clue who E.C. Bunker might be. Does anyone recognize this man? Bette
Maude E. Bunker (RN7120) appears numerous times in the Fayetteville, Arkansas Daily Democrat between 1921 and 1924. Her father, Herbert E. Bunker, had died in Lodi, Wisconsin, in 1912 and her sister had died in 1904. Maude and her mother Marian A. (Roberts) Bunker moved to Fayetteville and in 1921 Marian bought land there. After Maude's death in 1927, Marian returned to Lodi, Wisconsin where she passed away in 1936. While in Fayetteville, AR Maude was the supervisor for University High School. In 1923 she went to Chicago University to do graduate work but returned to the school in Fayetteville in 1924. Bette
Susie is talking about the area where the Bedfordshire Bunkers come from. The descendants of the American George's from Nantucket and Charlestown come from this area. I thought the rest of the list would be interested. Thanks Susie. I was certainly interested. Bette -----Original Message----- From: susie morley [mailto:susie@qtpiehouse.fsnet.co.uk] Sent: Tuesday, February 25, 2003 4:32 AM To: Bette Richards; Gil Bunker Subject: The Normans I've always wondered about a possible French/Norman connection in the area of Bedford that the Bunkers generate from. Some of the localplace names have a very un-English sound; There's Marston Moretaine, Houghton Conquest, Apsley Guise, Barton-le-Clay, all within a few miles of Tingrith. Lace making was very popular in the area, and I found a reference in one of my books of children's rhymes that explained 'Jack be nimble, Jack be quick, Jack jump over the Candlestick'. Apparently the lace making was taken into the area by the banished French wife (Henry VIII? I can't remember) and her court. The ladies whiled away the hours making lace and then passed their skills on. Eventually a cottage industry grew up and on a certain feast day, which may have been St Catherine's, the girls played a game whereby they had to leap over a lighted candle without extinguishing it with their long skirts. I'm just recalling this from memory from over two years ago. I can remember that 'Cut Off Day' comes from the day that the lace was cut from the pillow and taken into town to be measured up and sold. The girls were paid by the length and on certain days the merchants would be there to purchase their lace. I don't know if the French souinding names come from settlements made by the Court not returning to France or by Normans receiving grants of land after the Conquest. I've been reading up on Conquest of 1066, as we live in the area. Our car is serviced at Senlac motors and there are various places with the name Senlac. It turns out that 'Senlac' means 'Lake of Blood' which is how the Normans named the area after the Battle of Hastings. 'Lake of Blood Motors' Hmmm. Regards Susie
