Do you think you have a witch in your ancestry? Dick Eastman gives a couple sites to check that out in his newsletter this week. http://rootsforum.com A list of "approved ancestors" is at http://www.adeaw.us/ancestors.htm This list includes John Godfrey who never had any children. It might be interesting to see who his descendants are. There is an Association of Daughters of Early American Witches http://www.adeaw.us/ that uses this list. It does not include Indians accused or punished or killed as witches. I'm not sure if it includes African Americans. The Indians and Africans were the two largest groups hung as witches but are usually ignored. Quakers were regularly accused of being witches including at least one Bunker. No Bunkers on this list though. Enjoy. My kids are certain I am the wicked witch of the west but none of my ancestors are on the list. Too bad! Bette
Here is an interesting site if you are researching ships. http://ils.unc.edu/maritime/ships.shtml Bette

The fight continues. Politicians will be politicians This just in from the Florida Library Association <fla@lists.netimpact.net> And the fight continues even after the Legislators said NO! Please, again I ask you to start writing the legislators, but most importantly Glenda Hood, secretaryofstate@mail.dos.state.fl.us or jnash@mail.dos.state fl.us and Governor Bush, jeb.bush@myflorida.com These two have spoken out against what the legislators voted and will continue to do it their way --- in any they can. The saga continues as the Administration looks for ways around the will of the people and their legislators... Despite the Senate and House of Representatives' clear opposition to the transfer of the circulation to Nova Southeastern and their decision to NOT fund the deal, the Administration continues to look for ways around it and has suggested that private funds may be solicited to make the transfer. Also, despite opposition to the transfer of Records Management to the Department of Management Services, the Administration is looking for ways to accomplish this anyway through the bill that addresses reorganization of the Department of State and the Department of Community Partnerships. State records are evaluated by archivists for historical value and some positions in Archives are funded by the Records Management revenues. In March, the Archivist of the United States, John W. Carlin, wrote a superb letter to the Governor, Speaker of the House and Senate President that explaing the importance of keeping Records Management functions with the Archives. Jody Fitzgerald, FLA's legislative advocate is working with legislators on the reorganization bill to try to prevent both of these things from happening. It is absurd that the Administration continues to push for this horrible plan to dismantle the State Library of Florida. Unfortunately, they still don't understand what the citizens of Florida have been telling them for three months and what the House of Representatives communicated last week with their UNANIMOUS vote against funding the Nova deal. Please communicate with your legislators 1) that the reorganization bill should not give the Administration the ability to send the collection away or dismantle the State Library as they originally proposed, and 2) there is great value in keeping Records Management with Archives under the State Library--the functions of the two areas are closely related. As always, thank you for your continued efforts in support of our State Library. John F. Due to a computer malfunction I have lost all the correspondence and the email address of a Mr Theale (or similar name) who emailed me regarding the above gentleman. I have found the origins of a Brian Bunker who would be now , if still alive , in his seventies , so please contact me again. He may but only may, be the Brian you were talking about. Brian Bunker but not of Harlesden.
Dick Eastman's newsletter this week is so full of interesting things you really must read it. There is a long article about the use of handheld puters for genealogical records, sources for English records and much more. http://rootsforum.com I highly recommend it. Bette
The 1881 census in Canada says that William, the son of Robert Bunker (RN21882) and Permilla Harris, was born in Ontario but he was of German origin. This would indicate that Robert Bunker was probably born in Germany. We have come to a dead end with Robert and Permilla and probably need to be looking for them in Germany. Anyone researching this couple should also look at Canadian immigration records and ship passenger lists to Canada. Bette
I forgot to include Robert's ID number RN17881.
The Tennessee State Library has letters 1864-65 of Robert Bunker of Mobile, Alabama which he wrote to his daughters in Liverpool, England. It is part of the Sidney Perryman duMont Collection which includes genealogical papers pertaining to several families including the Bunkers. http://www.state.tn.us/sos/statelib/pubsvs/mguide02.htm I am not sure who this Robert Bunker is. Do we have anyone living near the TN library who might go and get copies of these for the BFA? Bette
Rootsweb newsletter contained several website URLs with California records http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~npmelton This site has some marriages and deaths, passenger lists and lists of companies coming overland to CA. It takes a while to search it because you need to click on the county and then click on each separate database but this has a lot of information. The previous is the main page from you all the rest can be found. Bette

For you people that need to make early plans for coming to Tucson in 2004, the dates are March 4-7, 2004. We'll be staying at the Pueblo Inn. http://www.puebloinn.com Room rates are going to be $69 plus tax. Considering the direction the legislature is going, who knows what the tax will be but should not be more than 15%. Right now it is 10.5%. This is the height of our tourist season. Spring training for the Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox and Arizona Diamondbacks will be in session. We will be staying in the same place as the White Sox team which ought to be interesting. I hope those of you with time shares are able to arrange the time for you to stay. There will be a trip to Nogales, Mexico where Americans do not need a passport to go visit. There will also be a trip to Tombstone and Karchner Caverns. I will post more about that later and in the Banner. I will also have links to these places on the website. See you all in Portsmouth in June 2003 as well as Tucson in March 2004. Any questions, give me a shout. Bette
-------- Original Message -------- Subject: State Library Update - GOOD NEWS Resent-Date: Sat, 5 Apr 2003 10:01:01 -0700 Resent-From: CA-SACRAMENTO-EVENTS-L@rootsweb.com Date: Sat, 5 Apr 2003 09:01:06 -0800 From: "Pamela Dallas" <pbdallas@earthlink.net> To: CA-SACRAMENTO-EVENTS-L@rootsweb.com If you research in Florida or are just wondering what is happening with the fight to keep the Florida State Library and Archives intact here is the latest update. Ok, now that I have calmed down. <G> We WON!!!!!!!!! Representative Bev Kilmer of Marianna presented to the Speaker of the House Johnnie Byrd a proposed amendment. He approved it and told her to present it to the House. It was done very late -- probably the last one on the agenda just before 5:00 p.m. The most amazing part is that it was a unanimous vote. Incredible, but true. Also, this is the way I understand it will work. Both the House and the Senate are proposing the exact same budget. So, that means, there is no discussion and this is what they will send to the Governor. The downside is that 14 people are still losing their jobs and it is mostly in the Archives area. That will hurt them. The books are staying, and 106 people still have their jobs!! Please send a thank you to all your representatives. They do deserve our acknowledgement of support because they DID listen even though at times we really thought they were against us. What an amazing turn of events! I am not going to be able to sleep for days!!!!!! Some of you will get this many times because I am trying to send to all my lists. I apologize, but good news is always worth receiving over and over. <G> Pam Cooper FGS/FSGS 2003 Conference Co-Chair < http://www.fgs.org > President, Florida State Genealogical Society < http://www.rootsweb com/~flsgs/ > Chair, Librarians Serving Genealogists < http://www.cas.usf edu/lis/genealib/ > P. The Wisconsin State Historical Society building is on the campus of the University of Wisconsin - Madison. It has microfilm of every newspaper of any size in Wisconsin on file, and access to the microfile is essentially walk- in. The facility also has microfilm of newspapers from major U.S. cities on-file. Since Lena, Illinois (many Bunker's in the Lena area) is very close to the Illinois / Wis. state line the WSHS is an invaluable tool for researchers in Northern Illinois, as well as the residents of Wisconsin. Wisconsin (like all other states) faces difficult budget choices. That nonwithstanding, I am continually puzzled by decision to cut library services. Wisconsin isn't unique here - I believe there was a proposal to close the State of Washington library. There are far better places to cut state spending than eliminating library services. I will resist the temptation to editorialize on that topic in this forum. Best regards H.A. (See article below.) There is an open letter from the Wisconsin State Genealogical Society President at: http://www.wiiowagensoc.org/WSGS1.pdf In that letter, it mentions that we need to make our view known to the Joint Finance Committee. The next public hearing for the Joint Finance Committee is in River Falls on Thursday, April 4th! It is vital that many people are able to make their opinions known about the proposed cut-backs. (The WSGS President states is so much better than I can.) If you do not live in that area, there are also hearings in Platteville and Madison (Milwaukee's hearing is already over). (See details for the Joint Finance Committee public hearings at: http://www.legis.state.wi.us/../lfb/jfc.html) If you cannot attend the hearings, please write to your senators and representatives, with copies going to the Joint Finance Committee chairperson. If you live out of state, please take the time to write a letter to the Joint Finance Committee, telling them about how important many of these services are.
