Every week I get the Rootsweb Review newsletter. Rootsweb still has a lot of records to access free in spite of their merger with Ancestry.com. The Rootsweb Review is valuable because it lists the new websites where you may find information that you are looking for. You usually do not get referred to these websites when you are searching Ancestry or Genealogy.com. This week their are lists of sites with Civil War burials in CN, yearbooks in Phoenix, AZ, history sites, Canadian sites and many more. To get the newsletter send an email to RWR-on@rootsweb.com. I think it is worthwhile. Bette
While I am used to getting dozens of letters a week from Nigeria and elsewhere saying I can get rich quick, today I received an email telling me I had won a million eurodollars. Baloney. If you get anything that asks you to contribute money, give your credit card number or bank information ignore it. These people make off with millions of dollars every year because they con people into giving them money in an effort to get more. As the saying goes "there ain't no such thing as a free lunch." And you don't win lotteries without buying a ticket. Bette

-------- Original Message -------- Subject: [SCGSI] Search Engine Tactics from Rootsweb Review Resent-Date: Thu, 1 May 2003 16:42:08 -0600 Resent-From: CASOLANOCGS-L@rootsweb.com Date: Thu, 01 May 2003 15:43:36 -0700 From: Kathy Busby <arkley@pacbell.net> To: CASOLANOCGS-L@rootsweb.com I thought this was an excellent article and should be noticed by our group. I know I hadn't tried some of those. Off to go try that with my Sprung surname. You never know how many people Sprung from here to there or sprung up from nowhere. Grin. Kathy 1e. USING SEARCH ENGINES: Googling Your Ancestors by Ted Pack tedpack@thevision.net http://www.tedpack.org/ This will be new and exciting to some of you. Others of you will wonder what I'll do next -- explain how to "dial" a telephone by pushing the little buttons? You can sometimes use a general search engine for genealogy. My favorite is Google, http://www.google.com but there are others -- AltaVista, Lycos, MSN, Dogpile, AOL. They all work about the same. The key is what they call an exact phrase, which you enclose in quotation marks. Let's assume you are looking for Eltweed Pomeroy and Malinda McCorkle, married in Pocatello, Idaho in 1888. This argument in the search engine: Eltweed Pomeroy Malinda McCorkle (without the quotation marks) means "show me all the pages that have the four words Eltweed, Pomeroy, Malinda and McCorkle on them". You might strike pay dirt right away; you might also get a page that listed Eltweed Smith, Pomeroy Murgatroyd, Malinda Smith and Ebeneezer McCorkle. This argument in the search engine: "Eltweed Pomeroy" "Malinda McCorkle" (with two sets of quotation marks) means "show me all the pages that have the exact phrases 'Eltweed Pomeroy' and 'Malinda McCorkle' on them". Given the rarity of the names, if you got a hit it would almost certainly be useful. However, if your ancestors are listed last name first, the argument above won't get them. You won't find them if they have middle initials on the page, either. This is a combination of exact phrase and any match: "Eltweed Pomeroy" Malinda McCorkle It says "show me all the pages with the exact phrase 'Eltweed Pomeroy' and the two words Malinda and McCorkle somewhere on the page." This argument would find a page with the sentence "Eltweed Pomeroy married Malinda, second daughter of Alphonse McCorkle ..." or "Eltweed Pomeroy married Malinda Q. McCorkle ...". General search engines are not perfect. They don't have a Soundex option, although Google will sometimes suggest alternate spellings for you. Some of them require a plus sign with each word or phrase, although Google doesn't. They work best for relatively uncommon names. If you are looking for John Smith who married Mary Johnson in New York City, you'll get a lot of hits, but your chances of getting the right one are slim. Most importantly and worth repeating, the phrase "Eltweed Pomeroy" is NOT the same as the phrase "Pomeroy, Eltweed" to a search engine. You get what you ask for. I usually try to use enough words and phrases in the argument that I get 20 hits or less. Quite often I don't get any, but I'd rather get a few of the right hits than a thousand wrong ones. In this case I would try all of these arguments: Four pairs of exact phrases: "Eltweed Pomeroy" "Malinda McCorkle" "Pomeroy Eltweed" "Malinda McCorkle" "Eltweed Pomeroy" "McCorkle Malinda" "Pomeroy Eltweed" "McCorkle Malinda" Four combination searches: "Eltweed Pomeroy" Malinda McCorkle "Pomeroy Eltweed" Malinda McCorkle "Malinda McCorkle" Eltweed Pomeroy "McCorkle Malinda" Eltweed Pomeroy And, just in case one of them was listed without a spouse, "Eltweed Pomeroy" Pocatello "Pomeroy Eltweed" Pocatello "Malinda McCorkle" Pocatello "McCorkle Malinda" Pocatello Permission to reprint articles from RootsWeb Review is granted unless specifically stated otherwise, provided: (1) the reprint is used for non-commercial, educational purposes; and (2) the following notice appears at the end of the article: Previously published in RootsWeb Review: Vol. 6, No. 18, 30 April 2003. Last week Dick Eastman talked about a program that marks every file in a GEDCOM with the source. It was proposed for people who get upset that someone uses their data and claims credit for it. However, this week Dick reported a much better use of the program. If I receive a GEDCOM from someone and I want to merge the database with mine, I need to mark every file with the source of the GEDCOM. If there are 2,000 files that can be a real pain and may mean that I will never merge it wither my database. Using GEDmark you can mark the GEDCOM and when merged every single file will have a source of the person who sent me the GEDCOM. Now that is a great use for this program. For a free download of this program and more information http://www.progenysoftware.com/gedmark.html You can also read Dick's newsletter from last week at http://www.rootsforum.com The newsletters are archived so you can get to it. Genealogy and history depend on documents to support them. I just received an inch thick package of records from Barbara Jarvis that will add considerably to the Bunker Family database and files. Thank you so much Barbara. I have numerous documents and pictures in the BFA file that other people have sent to us over time. In more than one case something has happened so that the family has lost the documents and the BFA was able to supply them with copies. I back up all our files. I keep paper and computer copies of all pictures and documents. I send a copy of the computer records periodically out of state so that in case there is a disaster at my house, we don't lose them. I urge everyone to do the same and any one who would like to send copies of their pictures and documents to the BFA for safe keeping can contact me on the list or at betterichs@earthlink.net or mail them to me at Bette Richards, 1655 W. Ajo #399, Tucson, AZ 85713. Again thanks to Barbara and all the others who periodically share information and documents with us. Bette

Bunker cCousins, For those who may have been searching for the Bob Bunker m __ Tall, new information has arrived. Seems Bob is a nickname and the given name is Baldin Lee (or Leigh) Bunker. Talls are registered in Newton Ferrers, Modbury, Ermington, Yealmpton See msg 610 and tks for the help gil
Hello Cousins, There is an English Bunker query on GenForum (#608) looking for a Bob (Robert?) Bunker who m __ Tall; at least 1 issue: George Bunker. Bob reported to be from Modbury, Devonshire branch I have no one named Tall in my files This sound familiar to anyone? gil
Dick Eastman's newsletter is out again and this issue is so full of information that I think will interest many of you I recommend that you read it. http://www.rootsforum.com This is the best genealogical newsletter published. I highly recommend it for the interesting information and sources that Dick publishes every week. Click on the standard edition. It is free. If you want more you can pay $15. I only get the standard edition and find it very valuable. This week I was especially interested in the GEDmark program. This is a free program that marks every single person in your GEDCOM with the source that you put in. The Bunker Family Assn. does not send out GEDCOM's. If we did though this would be excellent as we could mark every file with the BFA website as a source. Many people download GEDCOM's to and from the internet. A lot of people have been known to sell this information and claim it as their own without indicating that someone else did the research. This GEDmark program addresses that issue and the program is free. Dick also talks about Linux. This is a free operating system that really does not work with genealogy programs except one. It operates like Windows but there are some problems. These are quickly being solved and this new version seems to really excite Dick. If you do not want to spend megabucks for WIN XP maybe you might want to try Linux. Dick gives you the links. There is going to be a virtual genealogical conference. This sounds like a great idea and a way to learn a lot at a low price and without all the travel. It is going to be between June 10 and July 10 I think. Check out the newsletter for the dates and other information. I intend to "attend" this conference as it is the only one I can afford. If I could afford to go to several I would definitely as you really learn a lot at the conferences. At about $1,000 each though I cannot afford it. There is much more in the newsletter. Bette
