He and I continue to do research on both families. I am also a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War [SUVCW] (see links below). I'm curious to learn what information you have on BUNKERS who served in the Civil War and where you found the data. Much of the work the SUVCW does is to identify Civil War veterans and their final resting place. 3. When doing research on your family do not forget to check out the town and county sources and histories. http://www.rootsweb.com home page has a link down the left side of the page to towns and counties. The screen that comes up will let you enter only a town or a town and state. If you know that your ancestors were in Hancock but not the state, putting in the city name will get you the counties and states for all the Hancocks in the country. There are a lot of links on these pages for all kinds of records you will not find elsewhere. When you connect, be sure to scroll all the way down the page to see all the sources, not just the search boxes. Bette

    3. Dave, A great find and a very kind offer. The family in question is descended from Benjamin of New London NH. He b 23 Feb 1764 in Barnstead of Barrington. Valentine Estabrooks Bunker (U-108, 1965 BunGen p.163) is a grandson of Benjamin. A gr-gr-grandson, Colonel Page Scribner Bunker, b 1875 Menomoniw Wisc was one of our early family historians, and spent nearly 50 years researching this lineage. He was a vet of 3 wars, Spanish American, WW I & WW II. I'm sending you this additional data, and also forwarding your offer to family members on our BUNKER-L. If none of them respond to your offer, please contact me and I will be delighted to place the Bible in our family archives. It is most generous gift, I thank you very much. gil ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave Clark" <d.clark7@comcast.net> To: <gilbunker@snip.net> Sent: Monday, September 01, 2003 8:05 PM Subject: bunker family bible > Have a Bunker family bible; picked up in antique shop in NH years ago. > Although it looks good in my house, I thought maybe it could find its way > back to family given all the Internet communication these days. 1. More info. on the RPC vulnerability
    2. H.A. Kippenhan, Jr.
    3. Hi all: Bette Richards has reminded me (in private e-mail) that I forgot to include the most important details in my previous post; namely, I didn't tell anyone how to get the patch to close the RPC vulnerability hole. I will correct that oversight now. First, for more technical detail about the RPC vulnerability, refer to the following Microsoft security bulletin ... http://www.microsoft.com/security/security_bulletins/ms03-026.asp Note, the patches provided by Microsoft correct the RPC flaw in the following versions of Microsoft Operating systems ... o Windows NT v4.0 o Windows 2000 o Windows XP (Pro and HOme) o Windows server 2003. You can go to the following Microsoft web page and download a tool to scan your home PC and determine whether or not it has the RPC vulnerability ... http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx? FamilyID=c8f04c6c-b71b-4992-91f1-aaa785e709da&DisplayLang=en (note, you have to append the second line to the first to get the actual URL. If you do it properly, the middle part of the URL will read as follows ... details.aspx?FamilyID=c8fo4) The following Microsoft web page has links to the patches to fix the RPC vulnerability. Read the info. on the web page carefully, as there are different patches for Windows server 2003 (32-bit) and Windows server 2003 (32-bit). The same is true for Windows XP. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;823980#WinNT One more word of caution for everybody. Microsoft Corporation *N*E*V*E*R* distributes any fixes to its products via e-mail. If you get an e-mail message that appears to have been sent from Microsoft asking you to install the patch contained in an e-mail attachment, it is most certainly a HOAX! Best regards H.A. 1. A comment on home PC security
    2. H.A. Kippenhan, Jr.
    3. Hi all: I felt it prudent to pass along a bit of info. about the recent Internet worms (SoBig, etc.). In a previous message, I've implored everyone to keep their virus signature files current. That will protect your PC from attack via e-mail attachments that contain the virus payload. However, that isn't sufficient to protect your home PC. You must also apply the Microsoft patch that plugs the hole in the operating system for what is termed the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) vulnerability. For Windows XP and Windows 2000, that hot fix is KB823980. I don't happen to recall if the patch has other designations for Windows NT, Windows 98 (all flavors). If you don't have the RPC hot fix installed, your PC can be infected whenever you are connected to an ISP. Once infected it starts to run a trojan program (on your PC) that tries to infect other PC's on the network that don't have the RPC hot fix installed. Note, the propigation method for the Internet worm isn't e-mail; it's simply PC to PC communication over the Internet through the RPC vulnerability that may not have been patched. For more detail about how to check to see if your system is vulnerable, refer to the articles at the following web site: www.symantec.com Note, this shouldn't be construed as an endorsement of Symantec (as opposed to McAfee). I don't own any stock in either company. The articles describing the latest worms available at the Symantec site seem well written and understandable, even by those who don't do PC support as a livelyhood. I apologize for the length of this. If anyone has questions, please contact me off-list and I'll try and help. Best regards H.A. 3. I am trying a new program that filters out spam and each new message I receive will require that you enter a code word printed on the screen and confirm your account. This means that email sent automatically, which is what most spam is, won't get through so there is no one to enter that code word. Please be patient if you are trying to reach me. I get about 30-40 spam messages a day and nearly 80% of my mail is now spam. Hopefully, this will do the trick. Thanks. Be certain I want to hear from you and answer your questions and hang in there. 1. A suggestion for improved genealogy info.
    2. H.A. Kippenhan, Jr.
    3. Hi: I've been researching one of my family lines the last couple of days. The parents (Ernest Elmer & Fredericka Knuppel) married in Watertown, Wis. The eldest children were born in Columbus, Wis. The problem is that there are two small towns in Wisconsin named Columbus, one in Dodge Co., and the other in Columbia Co. Sadly, most of the info. published at www.familysearch.org is simply wrong. A little checking would find that the Elmer family lived in Dodge Co., and not in Columbia Co. Ernest's father was postmaster of a small town in Dodge Co. for a few years. If you don't know the county where a particular city is located, you might add this web site to your list of favorites ... http://www.mit.edu/geo Best regards H.A. 3. Early reports were that a battle had taken place on Bunker's Hill. Later reporters stated the battle really took place on Breed's Hill next door. Here is a site which shows archeological formations on Bunker Hill which makes it look like the earliest reports were correct. This is not easy to decipher. Do we have any archeologists on the list? http://www.cast.uark.edu/~kkvamme/geop/bunker_h.htm Personally, I believe the battle took place on both hills but the questions continue. Bette

    1. A genealogy program of some interest ...
    2. H.A. Kippenhan, Jr.
    3. Hi all: Those of you on the list who are fairly PC nimble might want to take the lifelines program for a spin. You can refer to the following web page ... http://lifelines.sourceforge.net/ I do not use lifelines as my principle genealogy database "keeper". Rather, I create a gedcom file which I import into the lifelines program. Lifelines has a rather flexible report writing capability, which I use to generate ad hoc sorts of reports. I'm working on a report that views my database and tells me what individuals were *probably* in a given geographic area in 1880. It makes doing 1880 U.S. census lookups a much more organized activity. Note that lifelines originated in the Unix world. If you are uncomfortable with a program that dosn't have the typical GUI interface, just ignore this message. Best regards H.A.
