    1. 1860-1870 Indiana Bunkers
    2. Bette Richards
    3. I have been searching the Indiana censuses for 1860 and 1870. There are a few Bunkers I cannot identify and a couple Germans you might be able to help me with or need information on. 1860 Perry Twp, Vanderburgh Co., Indiana, John Bunker age 35, laborer, b. Baden; Dana age 34, b. Hanover; John age 5, b. OH; Johanna age 3. b. IN; Mary age 1 b. IN. I cannot find this family in our database. 1870 Logansport, Cass Co., Indiana, Harmon age 26, b. Hanover, RR fireman (I cannot read the railroad he was working for). Our records indicate he was married to Eliza Knellson in 1882 in Cass Co., IN and d. 4 May 1913 in Defiance, OH. This is the first we have a birthplace. His name was probably Herman and misspelled. In 1860 in Clay, St. Joseph Co., Indiana, Catherine Bunker age 17, b. IN, living in the household of John and Elizabeth Slutsman. Catherine was the last listed for that household and right beneath her name was Elijah Bunker age 26 b. IN, with William age 1 b. IN. Elijah's name could have been Elisah but since I have never heard of that name I am assuming it was Elijah. I cannot find this family in our database. We have another Elijah I cannot find in 1870 in Clay Twp, St. Joseph Co., IN who looks like the Elijah above reported in 1860. Elijah Bunker age 38, b. NY, Catherine age 29, b. IN, Heiny age 11, b. IN; Noah age 4 b. IN; Mary E. age 3/12 b. Mar 1870, IN. Also in Clay Twp in St. Mary's Academy was May age 14. b. IN. In 1870 in Elkhart, Elkhart Co., Indiana we have Amelia Bunker age 28, b. OH, dressmaking, in the household of Alonzo and Addie Upson. Just beneath her name is John Shigley age 8 b. IN. In 1870 in Vernon Twp, Jackson Co., Indiana is David Bunker age 33 b. IN with Minerva age 21, b. IN and Chas. A. age 2 b. IN. I can't find them in the database either. In 1870 in Southeast Twp, Orange Co., Indiana is Gideson Bunker age 31, b. IN, with Martha age 32, William age 7, George age 5, Interion (that is what it looks like) a male, age 3 and Mary age 1/12 who should have been born in July 1870. In 1870 in Washington Twp, Rush Co. is John age 35, b. IN, with Rhoda age 27 b. IN, Alice age 8 b. IN, William B. age 7, b. IN; Clara A. age 3 b. IN and Rhoda age 1 b. IN If any of these sound familiar to anybody, please let me know so I can sort them out. Bette

    1. Edward Bunker, Dover Branch, mbr Mormon Battalion
    2. Mary-Gene Page
    3. On our recent vacation I picked up a copy of the book "The Mormon Battalion" by Norma Baldwin Ricketts. I was curious because, although Edward was not a direct ancestor, he was the brother of my direct ancestor. I had known that he was a member of this group, but I did not know anything about it, so I thought I'd read up on it. I found this book to be fascinating! The amount of research done by author Ricketts must have been overwhelming. Any member of the Dover Branch (or anyone else, for that matter) would find it interesting, I think. It's amazing what those people accomplished. In the Foreword, she notes "...one of the longest marches in the annals of military history." She goes on to point out just how significant their journey was to US History, at that time being powered by Polk's "Manifest Destiny" doctrine. And, for those of you not familiar with California history, they were present (actually witnessing) the discovery of gold by Marshall. They opened the Mormon/Carson Emigrant Trail over the Sierra Nevada and drove the first wagons over the Spanish Trail and Hensley's Salt Lake Cutoff of the California Trail. All this without clothing, and frequently without food and water. Oh, and did you know that they started out with thirty-one wives and forty-four children? Most of the women and children were left behind when the battalion came near to Pueblo, Colorado, but several continued to reach California - and one was pregnant, too. This book gives the full roster of soldiers (who were full-fledged members of the U.S. Army) and, in general, what happened to each one of them. A book written by an Edward Bunker descendant, Josephine B. Walker, titled The Bunker Family History was published in 1957 at Delta, Utah. In it is a brief autobiography written by Edward himself, and his remembrances can be coordinated with the movements given in the book. (He doesn't make much of it other than the fact that, after returning with other men to Salt Lake City, he then walked back to Council Bluffs without food, and accordingly had to eat his saddlebags!) I heartily recommend the Ricketts book to anyone interested in that era. Unfortunately, I do not know of any current (or reproduction) printing of the Walker book.

    3. Is there anyone out there that would take on a project for us? The National Archives has put online the WW II records for all branches of the service for those who died, were wounded, died in prison and were released from prison. It is formed by states and it must be browsed. This means you need to check each state for each category for the surname you are looking for. Sometimes you will have to check several pages until you find the correct one. We would really like to find the names of all the Bunkers that were wounded or killed but this is a big project and I do not have time to go through all of these. Is there anyone out there that would be interested in doing this research for us? If there is, please get in touch with me. Thanks. Bette

    1. [Fwd: The Historical Land Title]
    2. Mary-Gene Page
    3. Subject: Relevant to genealogical claims & history Gotta love red tape. This is an actual case (and it's funny)... meh A New Orleans lawyer sought an FHA loan for a client. He was told the loan would be granted if he could prove satisfactory title to a parcel of property being offered as collateral. The title to the property dated back to 1803, which took the lawyer 3 months to track down. After sending the information to the FHA, he received the following reply ... (actual letter): "Upon review of your letter adjoining your client's loan application, we note that the request is supported by an Abstract of Title. While we compliment the able manner in which you have prepared and presented an application, we must point out that you have only cleared title to the proposed collateral property back to 1803. Before final approval can be accorded, it will be necessary to clear title back to its origin." Annoyed, the lawyer responded as follows (actual letter): "Your letter regarding title in Case 189156 has been received. I note that you wish to have title extended further than in the years covered by the present application. I was unaware that any educated person in this country, particularly those working in the property area, would not know that Louisiana was purchased by the U.S. from France in 1803, the year of origin identified in our application. For the edification of uninformed FHA bureaucrats, The title to land prior to U.S. ownership was obtained from France, which had acquired it by Right of Conquest from Spain. The land came into possession of Spain by Right of Discovery made in the year 1492 by a sea captain named Christopher Columbus, who had been granted the privilege of seeking a new route to India by the reigning monarch, Isabella. The good queen, being a pious woman and careful about titles, almost as much as the FHA, took the precaution of securing the blessing of the Pope before she sold her jewels to fund Columbus' expedition. Now the Pope, as I'm sure you know, is the emissary of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. And God, it is commonly accepted, created this world. Therefore, I believe it is safe to presume that He also made that part of the world called Louisiana. He, therefore, would be the owner of origin. I hope to heavens you find His original claim to be satisfactory. Now, may we have our damn loan?" They got it

    1. old records
    2. Bette Richards
    3. When looking for marriage, birth and death records dated before 1900 you will usually find that they are not available in the state and county vital records. A few places will have them but if you have tried that and had no luck, you need to go to churches, cemeteries and probate court. To find the churches and cemeteries in existence during that era try county histories, town histories, state histories. Also, ask the local librarian. This may mean that you have to do it the way us old-timers did and that is write letters. When writing letters asking a church or cemetery to look up a record for you, send a stamped self-addressed envelope for any copy they might find. Also, a small donation goes a long way including a letter asking if there is any fee for the service or copy. Most of the churches do not have the personnel to do genealogical searches but sometimes have volunteers that will do the search and like getting donations. Another source is the state archives. Old probate records may be at the state archives. Do a search that says Alabama (or whatever state you are looking for) state archives and you should find them. Most are on line but not all will look things up for you. Remember nearly all states and counties are hurting for money and the first thing to be cut is going to be genealogical searches as they are not as important as searches for courts, the police, education, roads, health, schools. These searches are also the first to get fees put on them and get their fees raised. Not everything is free and on line. Bette

    3. Thank to everyone who responded to my query about E.E. Bunker. In the process of solving that dilemma I came across this website about West Virginia history which is quite good. Considering the connection with John Brown and Harper's Ferry and a few other interesting incidents in the Civil War, this is a good site to study Civil War history in general. There are a lot of pictures, a copy of a letter written by E.C. Bunker, the Brig. 3. I am trying to find out if Edward C. Bunker, b. New York City, NY 9 Oct 1830 and E.E. Bunker, Brigadier General, 1864 are the same person. There is correspondence with E.E. Bunker in 1864 (War of the Rebellion, Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, Part 1 - Reports, Correspondence, etc. pub. 1893) that indicates that he was in charge of the militia from Harrison, Taylor and Marion Counties at that time. There are no West Virginia state Civil War records listing E.E. Bunker. Edward C. Bunker appears in the 1850 census in Preston Co., VA in the household of his uncle Israel Baldwin. He came to VA as a young man with his uncle and guardian Israel Baldwin. He married Delia Hagans in 1851. In 1860 he was with his wife, Delia in Morgantown. He became a lawyer, prosecuting attorney and judge. From 1860 through 1863 he was prosecuting attorney for Monongalia Co., living in Morgantown. In 1863-64 he was a state senator. He was ill as a young man and did not complete his education but later read for the law. He died 24 Nov 1867. We have a record of two children: Harrison and Belle. Belle was said to have died young but Delia is in the household of John B. and Kate B. Payne in Kingwood, Preston Co., West Virginia in 1880. She is listed as a widow and mother-in-law. Perhaps there was another daughter named Kate or Kate B. and Belle were the same. Harrison is not found in the 1880 census so he perhaps died young. What I am trying to do is just connect the Brig. Gen of the militia with a known Bunker. Edward C. Bunker was the only Bunker living in West Virginia or Virginia at the time. I believe they are the same person but can find nothing about Edward that indicates he served with the militia. Do you have any idea where I might look to find more about this? I live in AZ so it is a bit difficult to get to West Virginia to do research. Bette Bunker Richards, Historian, Bunker Family Assn. http://www.bunkerfamilyassn.org
