I missed a page of people on the arrivals to San Francisco, CA. Along with Ulrich and girls there were on the Che H. Denis from Le Havre, France 28 Jul 1851: Elizabeth age 20, Elizabeth age 38, Elise age 4, Jacob age 11, Jacob age 8, John age 10 and John age 39. It looks like at least two families came from Le Havre together. Anybody got any ideas? Bette
On 28 Jul 1851 the Che H. Denis of New York left Le Havre, France and arrived in San Francisco, California with the following Bunkers on board Anne age 9, Anne age 14, Barbara age 18, Caroline age 3, Elizabeth age 3, Elizabeth age 43, Marie age 42, Marie age 6, Marie age 17, Rosine age 8, Ulrich age 11, Ulrich age 38, Verena age 6, Verena age 13. Does anyone know who this might be? Bette
Merry Christmas to you all. Last month I had a holiday at Stewart Island which is the smallest and southernmost of New Zealands 3 main islands. In the entrance to the only harbour is a small group of rocks known as the "Bunker Rocks" These were apparently named after Capt Eber BUNKER. Eber was a Nantucket Whaler who was contracted to transport Convicts to Sydney Australia in the second fleet (1790?). He then went on to hunt whales in the southern ocean and put a sealing party ashore in southern NZ. He became a prosperous land owner in Sydney (the suburb of Liverpool was originally his land). His other claim to fame was getting the job of transporting Capt Bligh (of Bounty fame) back to England after he was stripped of his post as Governor General for New South Wales. Eber married well as his wife was a Collingwood and closely related to the Admiral who took command at Trafalgar after Lord Nelson was killed. I suspect this connection was why he, as an American, was favoured by the English so soon after the events of 1776. My interest in Eber BUNKER arose from the search for the parentage of my Gt Gt Grandmother Elizabeth BUNKER (1818 to 1898). This search continues!! Murray Reid Auckland NZ
When I was a little girl growing up in Minnesota, every winter we would go out into the woods and take a sleigh ride. The sleigh was on skies and pulled by two horses with bells on them. If there was not enough snow, we would ride in the wagon filled with hay and pulled by two to four horses adorned with bells. The beautiful horses, the sun glistening on the new fallen snow and the sound of the bells was such a treat. About 20 years ago I moved to Arizona and was astounded to see roses blooming on Christmas. Since then I have had roses from my own yard every Christmas and they are quite beautiful. For those of you in areas where it is cold, may you have a beautiful white Christmas all snuggled up warm in your homes. For those of us in the south, may we all have roses for Christmas. And may all of us have a better year ahead. Happy holidays. Bette
Barb sent me this site with a lot of information about Mormons. http://www.xmission.com/~nelsonb/pioneer.htm Good site. Bette
I have been correcting errors in our database and am amazed at how many of our ancestors lived over 90 or 100 years. Especially in the eras prior to the 1900s. The average life span may have been only 35-40 years but that average included all the numerous infant births, deaths from small pox, typhoid, malaria and syphilis. If people were not exposed to these diseases and were fortunate enough to never be injured too badly or to get an inflamed appendix, they frequently lived past the age of 70 and even into their 90s and 100s. There are more of us doing that today because of vaccines and antibiotics. In my direct Bunker line the average lifespan is almost 90 years. That includes the infant deaths and goes back to James of Dover in the 1600s. Of course, my grand-aunt just died at 108 so she helped the average some. Right now my father is 86 and has 3 1/2 great-great-grandchildren. He is in excellent health and I expect him to be around for a while yet. On average the Dover Bunkers are quite long-lived. Good genes. Bette

Bunker cousins, Can anyone add information to the research of Dodavah's three daughters? gil ----- Original Message ----- From: Bette Richards To: Gil Bunker Sent: Sunday, December 14, 2003 2:17 AM Subject: RE: Bunker GenForum Query # 679 I am having a terrible time getting anything to work right now on the internet. (Must be your bad weather ;-) However, I have another son, William b. 1830 to Dodavah and Rebecca. The two younger daughters born between 1825 and 1830 were named Lurinda and Rebecca. I have the marriage of Amelia and Daniel Wood but no further information. My informant thought that Amelia was the daughter of Maria who married William S. Merrill. The 1850 census shows Amelia Bunker in the household of William Merrill and his wife Maria. I have no source for Amelia being Maria's daughter. Someone else is researching this family but I am not sure who. Can you copy the message and put it on the Bunker list? He might get some help that way. I tried to answer him but everything I do on the net crashes tonight. For those of you searching the Bonkers, the 1860 census lists in Monmouth, Warren Co., Illinois, Jas M. Bunker, age 44, painter, b. NY, Polly age 35, b. OH, Melissa age 16 b. IL; Lorenzo age 12 b. IL; Molesta age 6 b. IL, Jack age 4, b. IL and Ida S. age 2 b. IL. In 1880 in Monmouth, Warren Co., IL Polly Bunker age 55, b. OH, widow, pop b. SC, mom b. VA, dressmaker; Molesta age 26 b. IL, pop b. NY, mom b. OH; Warren age 16, b. IL, cigar maker; Ora A. age 7, granddaughter b. IL. It would seem that James' children in the past have been assigned erroneously to Jeremiah Bonker, his father. There is a lot of confusion with this family. Please contact me if you are working on them. Maybe we can get them sorted out. Bette
Maralyn sent this and it is a good site. No Bunkers but for those of you searching for other names this might help. Thanks Maralyn. http://www.biographi.ca/EN/index.html Bette
Recently, your list coordinator has received an extraordinary of bounced message in which a program called Spam Cop is blocking mail from the Bunker-L mailing list because it perceives Rootsweb e-mail as "spam." Spam Cop is one of those aggressive programs that blocks legitimate e-mail from being received by subscribers to legitimate e-mail services. Users of Spam Cop will need to send e-mail to get it to accept mail from Rootsweb's Bunker-L list server which has an Internet Protocol address of 207.40.200.39. As your list coordinator, I don't regularly respond to any of these bounced messages as Rootsweb's servers do attempt to resend mail. But it seems that recently this problem has gotten worse, and if you use Spam Cop to block e-mail, you will need to act affirmatively to get it to accept Bunker-L mail from Rootsweb. I will send copies of this message to users receiving blocked messages, advising them to find another spam filter for their e-mail program or complain loudly to Spam Cop marketers for blocking legitimate e-mail messages. The BFA likes to honor our veterans and we try to gather all the documents we can find about any who served in any military action. We are trying to find copies of records about the Bunkers who served in the Revolutionary War. We have knowledge of 41 Bunker/Bonker men who served in some capacity but records of only two, Benjamin (N-80) and William who served in the Delaware militia. The other names are: Batchelor N-40; Beniah D-18; Bradbury D-5-I; Dodavah U-450; David N-66; Edward, family unknown; Eli D-37; Enoch D-14; George N-32; Isaac D-20; James Giles d-17; John D-18; Jonathan D-15; Jonathan D-38; Joseph D-15-IV; Joshua N-31; Nathan, family unknown; Peleg N-45; Richard N-84; Samuel N-18; Silas D-21; Solomon N-67; Sylvanus N-28; Thomas, family unknown but possibly a Bonker; Timothy, family unknown; Tristam N-29; William, commander of privateer 'Hound", family unknown; William, U-20; William, enlisted from NY and died Oct 6, 1777, family unknown; William served from NY and might be the same as the preceding William, family unknown; Zachariah D-28; Zeboulon. We have published a bit more information about these men in the Bunker Family History. (Gil has a great sale on these right now). For those we can identify, the numbers are listed above. N=Nantucket, D=Dover; U=unconnected and we have a bit of information about their families in the database too. If you are a descendant of any of these Bunkers and have copies of their Revolutionary War records, would you consider donating copies to our library? If you would like to have the government search their records and send you copies, contact me and I will tell you how to do that. If you have copies of any other Bunker military records and would like to send us copies we would love that too. What I do when I get them is scan them into the database and thereafter when I print out a record for that person, I can key it to print the attached images too. In addition to me having these records in the database, there are copies of the database with other members in case something happens to my database. I also keep them in the paper files. Using our database and library is a great method to make sure that your family documents do not get lost somewhere along the way. The BFA has been in existence for over 90 years and it is likely we will continue for a long time. So many documents have been lost. I appreciate any documents, vital records, military records, newspaper articles, etc. and especially Bible records that you can send me. Can you help us with this? Bette

G. D. Bunker, left Seattle, WA May 24, 1900 on the SS Ohio and arrived in Nome, Alaska June 14, 1900. Does anyone know who this is? Bette
With our new Godfrey Library subscription I can now search all the census records from 1790 to 1930. Most of the censuses just list in the index the name of the head of the household. 1880 and 1830 have an every name index so even the children are in the index. Slowly but surely I am trying to get all the census records in the database. I have finished the 1850 records (I think). I am working on the 1860 ones. In some states there are not too many Bunkers so I might get all the census records in at one time. I have entered into the database all the Indiana Bunkers listed in the 1860, 1870 and 1900 census. I will be glad to look up anyone else that you may be interested in. Tell me as much as you can about them. If their name is George I need an approximate date and/or place to try to find them. I always joke about the George's because that is the most popular name amongst the Bunkers but any common name may bring up several people and it is hard to tell which is which. Today it has been cold and windy in Tucson so I have been messing around with the census records as an excuse not to clean the house. Any port in a storm! ;-) Bette
