He had students create an Index of the various periodicals published in Virginia up until about 1930. Therefore you will not find anything published after that time indexed in it. It can be found in most large Libraries. It is a four volume set. Then you must find the publication listed. However if you are looking for anything published since then you should try and find PERSI which is a periodical source index published by the Allen County, Indiana public Library. It can be purchased on CD-ROM from Ancestry. Once you find an article of interest, you can then order a copy from the Library for under $10.00. S word of caution regarding date material. Most of the early article do not contain source citation and should be used as a guide for verifying the details. Margaret Margaret R. I am looking for more information about this family. I believe a man that lives here in Tucson is related to them. If anyone out there is researching this family, would you please contact me. Thanks. Bette
Brian gave me this really informative Australian site. It lists the military participants in WW II that came from Australia. It includes their service number, date of birth, place of birth and the service branch. http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/script/name.asp Really good information. Bette
In the continuing saga of stupid government requirements for a passport I received a telephone call today from some idiot in the state department that wants a copy of my husband's death certificate that shows his last name was Richards. Since my driver's license was issued in 2000 it does not show that I have used the name Richards for at least 5 years! My driver's license is issued in the name Bette Bunker Richards. I told this idiot that my license to practice law was in the name of Bette Bunker Richards and I had legally changed my name to Richards. He then proceeded to tell me the law in California that you need a court order to change your name. I promptly told him I am a retired judge and there is no state law in the nation that requires that. You can change your name at will any time you want to and need no court to confirm or bless it. He reluctantly agreed with that. I also told him California law does not apply to me as I am not a resident of California because I am sure he did not know that Tucson, Arizona is not in California. My name change occurred in a Tribal Court. That really blew his mind. In spite of this conversation, the idiot did not want a copy of the court order changing my name or my law license issued 25 years ago with the name Bette Bunker Richards on it. Instead he still wants my husband's death certificate! I told him he was a chauvinist to say the least and my name was Bette Bunker Richards no matter what my late husband's name may have been. Not good enough. If I want the passport I have to send him my husband's death certificate! Mind you I did not send them a marriage license to show I was ever married to Archie! All women ought to rise up and scream. 100 years ago my dear aunt was fighting for women's rights and I still get an idiot like this? There is something terribly wrong with this system that requires a woman to be identified as her husband's wife and nothing else. Thank you for letting me scream and stomp my feet. Sometimes I wonder what I walked all those picket lines for and filed all those law suits for when this is the result. Since I want the passport, I will definitely send the death certificate. I may also give my laughing husband a big raspberry as I am sure he is looking down from heaven and laughing his head off at this. He too was active in the women's rights movement in the 1970s but was a closet chauvinist at heart. He would have thought this was so funny. And as usual when I am stomping mad he would have been laughing like crazy while I was yelling and stomping around about it. I used to be a government worker and am well aware of the fact that most of them are intelligent, hard-working people. Why, oh why do I have to get idiots? Bette

If you are packing for the trip to Tucson, pack both warm and cool clothes. The day time temps will be in the 70s and 80s. The night time temps will be from the 40s to 60s. Tombstone and Nogales are both 1,000 feet higher than Tucson which means they are 5-10 degrees cooler. In addition, they tend to be windy and a cold wind on a warm day can be pretty chilly. If we don't need sweaters or jackets, the bus driver will be staying with the bus so it will be ok. Karchner Cave is always 68 degrees and VERY wet. I am a desert rat and by the time I get done with the tour I am pretty cold but you guys from snow country might find it very pleasant. You will definitely be able to swim in the pool. The motel also has an exercise room. I suggest that you bring a sweater or jacket no matter what but you may also want to bring shorts and a tank top. Everything here is air conditioned year round. The bus will be air conditioned. I highly doubt that we will need the heat on the bus. I was driving around today with the air conditioning on. For the banquet we dress up a little but slacks for the ladies is fine. We tend to do what we call Tucson dressy. That means if you have to wear a tie you are not in Tucson! Our banquets usually look that way. We have gotten lots of snow so if you want to ski it looks like the ski lift will be open too. And of course, we have nearly as many golf courses as we have people. Bring sun screen if you intend to go to the ball games. Everyone always gets sunburned at the spring training games. See, we've got everything! Bette

I live in St. Louis, so I just gave this one a quick shot. There is no "cemetery" listed in the phone book, but there is a parish church so I gave them a call on this. The lady told me that St. Vincent's Parish used to have a cemetery that is long-since gone. She was uncertain if it was relocated or just abandoned, but it was located smack in the middle of downtown proper, long-since covered with houses (it might even be the public housing complex, I'd have to drive it to check that). She said it was located west of Jefferson and south of Park Avenue, closer to the intersection of Park Avenue and Lafayette. She also said that she was not certain that it was exclusively used by the parish, but she would only have some record if the individual was buried by their church. She also cautioned that they are so inundated with genealogical requests that they have had to institute a policy whereby they have designated a person who charges $10.00 per hour to do these look-ups. If you want me to pursue this further I can give it a stab. The Archdiocese may have these records that I could look into without incurring cost - not sure about that one. I've benefited from the research of others so often, if I can help with this I will give it a good try. This is sort of a cool site. You can search by surname, using the name itself, begins with or soundex, add given name, date and state/county. It contains over 200,000 names and over 50,000 surnames so it might be a good source if you are having problems. http://userdb.rootsweb.com/alumni/ This one has military rosters. http://userdb.rootsweb.com/military/ Both came in this week's Rootsweb Review which you can subscribe to at RWR-on@rootsweb.com Bette

While waiting around for the laptop to get updated I decided to check my spam blocker to see if I had received any legitimate messages that I wanted to read. There were none that I had not already authorized. However, there were 34 messages offering me things to increase the size or effectiveness of my "ahem" "male member". Since I do not have one regardless of all the numerous names they can think of to describe it, they are certainly a waste of cyberspace aren't they? In addition, I received 3 more advertisements for prescription drugs (not Viagra), one solicitation to help some poor person in Nigeria needing to get me to help them get the funds their government stole from them or whatever, and one that had as a subject "God Bless you" which was also probably a solicitation for some poor person in some remote country. And then I got 2 messages from companies I have done business with in the past but no longer want their ads or products. It seems to me that spam has become the mecca of the porn world. There is nothing we or the government can do about this as most of this stuff is coming from foreign countries and by the time it can be traced the website has been shut down and they have just moved elsewhere. Most of the servers are offering spam blockers. However, they are just as likely to block mail you want as mail you do not want. There are some like the one I use that blocks everything that a human being does not respond to. I anticipate that soon all the servers will be using this type of blocker and our unwanted mail is going to have to be sent individually by a human instead of by mass mailing. This should create numerous jobs for people in places like India that are now handling most of the computer support, sales, etc. anyway and it ought to increase the use of English worldwide so that the workers can read these messages. Now aren't you glad that you are providing jobs for poor people? Advertisement is the lifeblood of the business world. I think it is very interesting that the porn and illegal drug world is using spam much much more than legitimate businesses. I prefer my advertisements to come by regular mail. That way it helps to keep the cost of postage down and I can deposit it in the recycle bin on the way in from the mailbox. I don't mind at all that TV is full of ads. I watch so little TV it does not affect me much anyway. My city has a thing about billboards as do many others and there are fewer of them all the time. Tucson likes descriptive murals much better. Pictures, not words. Sorry for rambling on but isn't it the pits that 90% of our email is porn or sex related? Bette
Hi everybody. Gil Bunker's computer crashed a week ago and they have not yet been able to get it fixed. The BFA president is currently off line and will notify the list when he can get back on. In the interim if anyone needs anything that they think I might be able to help with let me know. Also, he may or may not get the messages he has been sent during the last week. If you sent him a message and never get a response, try again when he gets back on line. Bette

Does anyone know when the Mormon Temple was built in Salt Lake City? We have in the 1870 census in Salt Lake City a stonemason named Aleck Bunker with his family all born in England. They do not show up in later census records. I wonder if he was there building the temple? Bette
When searching for records many are on the various paid and free databases online. However, a lot more can be found by searching state archives. Go to your browser and put in the state archives and then see what you get. For instance a search for Illinois state archives will bring up more than one site but one has in its description "online databases" so obviously that is the one you would chose first. Clicking on that site will bring you databases of deaths and marriages in Illinois. A good many of these state archive databases are not on the ordinary sites such as Ancestry, etc. If the page you bring up with records covers more than your screen, be sure to set your printer on landscape when you print it out or you will lose part of the page in printing. Since the part you lose is usually the county or city you definitely do not want to miss that information. Do not search only something that specifically says "online databases". Also, search the library if it is available and look for history links, county and city links. You may also find links to schools, churches, etc. These may not have searchable online databases for everything but it will give you addresses to write for various other records. And the library may have an online catalog. Sometimes you can have research done for you in the state archives library. Sometimes you pay a fee and sometimes it is free. Usually you can buy copies of records and also microfilms. I don't own a microfilm reader but when I ordered microfilms from the state archives library, the public library let me use theirs and their printer to read and copy records from the microfilms. In addition, I found frequently the historical society libraries will have microfilm readers and will let you use them. The Family History Centers of the LDS will too. I usually give the FHC or library the microfilm after I am finished with it as a return gift for the use of the reader and copier. Along the same line are the university libraries. Frequently, their catalogs are online. Sometimes you can borrow books and microfilms on interlibrary loan but not all libraries do interlibrary loans. All state residents can use the state university library though. I was shocked to find several family histories for New England families in the University of Arizona library. Also, microfilms of the abolitionist newspaper one of my ancestors published for several years before Arizona even belonged to the US. You never know what is there until you look. Bette

Jan or Jun 1870, ENG, imm 1890, actor with a group of actors and actresses at the Owl Theatre. Nearly every line on this page was crossed out including many of people who were not actors and actresses. There were other households which were headed by females born in England. I did not include them as it would be nearly impossible without their husband's names to figure out who they were. I only included those that had children that were born in England. If you see someone that interests you, let me know. I have not tried to match them up with people in our database as yet. We tend to think that the Bunkers all got here in America in the 1600s but it is obvious that many immigrated much later. The US censuses do not give places of birth until 1850. I did not include those as that is another database. Later. Later also for those listed in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census as being born in England. It has been raining for several days in AZ. Lovely. Snow on the mountains. And we will probably have some pretty wildflowers in Mar and April if it warms up now. Bette
Steve (D-657-I) is a BFA member and a descendant of Ensign Ben Bunker D-7, whom he has portrayed. The article is about 5-years old and Steve sold the business around that time, and moved to Maine.
