I recently purchased 2 CD's of 40 volumes of NH state papers. While it is tedious to look through all the indexes, I have finally finished looking at least for the Bunkers. I discovered some interesting things about James Bunker (1). He and William Follett were witnesses to a bill of sale of land to Nicholas Follett on 6 Sept 1652. The Follett land later came into the hands of the Bunkers. So far this is the earliest known record of James being in Dover. However, he is listed in a census as being there in 1648. Later James signed as a witness on an note with John Follett. He always signed with an X. He served several times with the Grand Juries of Dover in 1659. This was several different grand juries. He acknowledged a debt of £14-6-6 due Richard Cutt in 1667. He and several others were appointed to administer the estate of William Roberts in 1676. All but one of those named refused to serve as administrators. That is quite unusual. I wonder what was going on there? The inventory of James' estate valued it at £83. This would make it about an average amount for an estate of those days. His son, Joseph's estate in 1719 was valued at £75. There was no inventory of James (2) estate but his widow, Martha, got 2 rooms and the cellar beneath those rooms for her own use. She also got land and one boundary is described as "where the old house stood" to the creek. James (2) inherited the land of James (1) so this statement is intriguing. Was there a house built before the garrison house was built? Did James (2) build a house that he lived in before he inherited the garrison house? Wouldn't the garrison house be the "old house"? Did James (2) build a new house and reside there after he inherited the land? James (2) youngest son, Elijah, seemed to be a trustworthy man and perhaps one with substantial property as he frequently stood surety for bonds on various estate administrations. If, for example, a bond was required for an estate valued at £100 the surety was obligated to pay off that much if the administrator made off with the estate. Zachariah, grandson of James (1), son of John, left an estate valued at £431 in 1751. However, John Runnells, father of Sarah Runnells who married Jonathan Bunker, left an estate valued at £4,066 in 1756. He names 9 children in his will including Sarah "Bunkar". Throughout the will he spells the name Runals. When the estate was settled and the heirs paid off, Jonathan Bunker received the portion left to his wife, Sarah. In those days and until well into the 1900's the property of the wife belonged to her husband. She had no control over it at all. Anyone with NH ancestors would find these CD's valuable resources. They cost $40 and may be obtained from NH State Archives at 71 S. Fruit St., Concord, NH 03301. They have a website at http://www.sos.nh.gov/archives/ but I was not able to purchase them through the website. Bette
Here is a database that has some different items on it. It is titled professional, society, religious and misc. name rosters but it also includes Leavenworth Prison. If you look for Bunkers you will only find prisoners, but you might like it for other names. http://userdb.rootsweb.com/groups Bette
Cousins, The next edition of the Banner will be placed in the mail as of Wednesday afternoon. It will contain the scholarship form. Sorry for the delay. Bette, Some excess will be shipped "overnight" for distribution to prospective cousins attending the reunion. See you guys in Tucson, tomorrow gil

I believe that Kentucky has just put theirs up with the images but I don't know of any others. I love it that in a state with one of the highest incidences of identity theft that we do this. Obviously, our legislature and governor, who is an ex-attorney general and knows about the identity theft problems, are well aware of the fact that there is no known case of identity theft from stealing birth and death records or any other genealogical records. Identity theft comes from people stealing your credit card and/or its number. Almost all of it comes from thefts from the mailboxes, restaurant charge slips and other charge slips. People want your money not your relatives. For those of you who are trying to help me figure out which Betty Bunker married a Hunkens or Hunkings: We surmised that this was really a Huckins. However, I just received the CDs containing 40 volumes of NH state papers and in 1665 a John Hunking signed along with James Bunker the petition to be free from MA. There was also a Mark Hunking, ship captain filing suit there for return of his ship in 1679/80 and a William Hunking. Evidently, there were some records with the name Hunking mentioned. So anything you can find on a marriage between a Hunken/Hunking and a Bunker would be appreciated. Thanks. Bette

By 1781 the vote of the 'Associates," the survey of the side lines had begun. 1782, Eight families - consisting as nearly as can be estimated, of 39 persons, 17 adults, and 22 children, The preceding crops had been corn and potatoes, with one person growing wheat. The crops had been good. The first settlement "Associates" meeting was held in the home of Samuel Butterfield. 1783, A serious calamity befell the settlements with the severe frost of Aug. 9 1782. All corn and wheat was killed, resulting in a scarcity of bread stuff. Immigration continued to go forward. 1784 was an uneventful year. A few more settlers came in. 1785, was the second meeting of the "associates." May 12th 1785 the survey of the side line completed. before winter set in, 6 new settlers arrived. William Gould made a permanent settlement on the farm next below the one his brother had entered. Samuel Keen and William Blackstone, who were brother in-laws, came from Damariscotta and settled upon lots they had taken several years before. 1787, Settlements went rapidly forward, and back lots began to open. Silas Perham and Silas Gould, came from Dunstable, the former taking the back lot on the East side, and the latter, taking a lot on the West side of the river. Later........a group of settlers had a petition drawn up....... In this petition the name Farmington occurs for the first time, and was adopted at the suggestion of Col. Porter as the name appropriate to the character of the place as a farming town. A majority of the inhabitants were in favor, a number of the lower part of town were not. 26 men signed, Samuel Butterfield Jesse Gould, William Gould. then 8 changed there mind. Jesse Gould Dec 24th 1793 just about everyone (Men only) had signed it. It went through and Sandy River Township be Farmington. A group from the lower portion of the Sandy River town didn't want to join, so they got together with the upper part of Chester, then decided to form a township of Parkerford.. William Gould appears for the Parkerford Township Jesse Gould does not appear again. Samuel Butterfield Appears on the final Farmington list. I will add more name to what I have already given as I do more Surnames. What I have down here for the settlement story is just an out line and I will add more as I do different Surnames. The book is great as to the details it gives on how life was for the settlers. Life is so complex now to what it was, that I think simpler is better. I think I would rather have lived in those days. Portland Maine Historical Society 1928 The second book I bought is.. Free Street Baptist Church ( a branch of the Federal Baptist Church,) Catalogue of members with historic notes and covenant and by=laws 1886 (This is a great book as it has ....., Number....Name....How received....from what church.....when received.....Manner of removal......place of removal....date of removal....number...) It crosses two pages, and the manner of received, was where a person move from and presented the church with a letter from the prev. church, or baptism, and the manner of removal was either a family moved and got a letter from this church, as it states where the family move to, or a person died, giving the date of death. A few people just got kicked out. It has all the names of the Rev. also. it is a great little book for some good genealogy info. BJ
Arizona has put birth and death records from about 1887 to 1958 online. Even if you do not think any of your people were in AZ, remember that it has always been a place to travel and many travelers die here. You might be surprised at what you find. Great site. http://genealogy.az.gov/ Bette
I have been swamped with requests for info. My lines are Butterfield and Bunker, so I have copied everything with those surnames in it. Any other surname I have info on, I have because it was on the same page as my surnames. I will send info on the names you e-mail me with first and surnames. via e-mail. With the people that want all Bunkers and Butterfield info, we will need to work out something via snail mail unless I buy a scanner. As, I tried DIG. Camera photo, and that didn't work. I have saved all the e-mail, and tomorrow I will print them out and start this project rolling. Remember that I do live 10 min. away from the Maine historical Library and they have tons of info on MASS too. To me that is as good as a gambler living next door to a race tract. BJ
