Personally, don't have anyone in South Africa BUT for anyone that does, this sounds like a good site to check out. Haven't run across many South African sites before, so will be sending to four or five of the mailing lists. .. Sally Would it be possible for you to post the following announcement on your list - I do not know if some of your members might be interested in South African Genealogy: Thanks Colin Pretorius *********** It is with great pleasure that we announce the dawning of a new era in South African genealogy. After lengthy discussions involving people interested in promoting South African genealogy, ideas and plans came together to make it possible for the Genealogical Society of South Africa (GSSA) to open a virtual branch. This branch is known as eGSSA. For many years there have been people who, for various reasons, could not join a regular GSSA branch. Some of these reasons include living too far from a branch or living outside South Africa. These people still have a need to belong to a branch and to enjoy the benefits of GSSA membership, such as receiving GSSA's flagship quarterly journal, Familia. GSSA has been established to meet these needs. We plan for members of eGSSA to be able to hold virtual meetings in the future, either via streaming technology or in a chat room a-la-MSN. . It is also planned that eGSSA will make some of the GSSA products available electronically, and that some databases could be placed on the Internet for search purposes. This all depends on the availability of storage capacity. eGSSA's website is currently hosted at http://www.ggsa.info/eggsa The management eGSSA team is as follows: Branch Chairperson: Colin Pretorius (based in Australia) Secretary: Anne Lehmkuhl (based in Canada) Technical services: Richard Ball (based in the UK) Ex Officio: Martin Zöllner (based in South Africa) Regional representatives: Australia/NZ/Oceania/Asia: André van Rensburg (based in Australia) North & South America: Anne Lehmkuhl (based in Canada) Europe & the UK: Richard Ball (based in the UK) Africa & the Middle East: Daan Hamman (based in South Africa) The membership fees given below include an electronic copy of Familia, the Society's quarterly journal, as well as the virtual branch's own quarterly newsletter/journal, called genesis. Other benefits include discounts on some CD products. South Africa R115 ( R90 per annum GSSA fee & R25 eGSSA fee) . Rest of Africa and Middle East : US $ 22 North and South America US $22 United Kingdom GBP 11 Europe Euro 18 Aus/NZ/Oceania/Asia Aus $ 25 Payments for residents IN South Africa can be done via Absa, while payment for residents OUTSIDE South Africa will be done via Paypal (Australian and NZ prospective subscribers can contact Colin Pretorius for additional options) For those people who are not currently GSSA members, or cannot join a current branch, this is an ideal opportunity to become part of GSSA and to step into this exciting era. The contact email address is eggsa@fmxau.com
Brian sent me this site. There are hundreds of Bunkers listed here. If you are looking for a connection to your ancestors in England, you might want to check this site. You have to register for it but once registered, the search is free. Then I think you may have to pay a fee to learn more. http://www.genesconnected.com

The reason for this is the devastation during the English Civil War. Above are several sites I have found that tell a bit about this war. I am sure there are many more. Bette
I was reading an article recently that said the average time it takes for a computer that is online 24-7 connected by a high speed DSL connection to be hacked is less than 24 hours. We watch for viruses and worms in our email and NEVER open an attachment that says .exe. But the busy little hackers get into our computers any time and can do all kinds of things including using our email to send out spam. I have several blockers on my computers. One is a virus program (mine happens to be Norton but there are several good ones). Then I have a fire wall on each computer. Then I have a firewall on the router connecting my computer to the internet DSL connection. I also use a spam blocker program which many of you have encountered. That program grabs about 60 messages a day and prevents them from getting to me. Most of them are porn and the illegal sale of prescription drugs. With all this blocking, how long do you think it would take for a hacker to hack into my computers? About a few seconds. No matter what we do they get through. The very best programs cannot stop them. The federal government's top security sites are regularly hacked. Some juveniles and people with juvenile minds think this is the most clever thing they can do. My spam blocker program regularly blocks messages allegedly returned by the mail demons that contend that they could not be delivered. These frequently contain viruses and worms. I never sent them but this is one of the latest scams to get people to open mail with viruses. Then there are the messages that purport to come from earthlink, aol, microsoft and others that say we need to know about a security issue immediately. These are all done by naughty people as the companies NEVER send these kind of emails. And we get messages that our order or account needs some work. Again these are NEVER sent by the companies. Email is in serious danger of becoming extinct for the simple reason that we cannot deal with all this junk. I use the internet for genealogical research and email. I never use it for anything else. We cannot control these hackers, and porn pedlers. They route their messages through other countries. Most originate in other countries. As soon as someone is on to them, they close that box and open another one. No laws we make are going to make any difference at all. The latest is for people to use the TDD for deaf people and stolen credit card numbers to order things by the gross and send it to foreign countries. I work very hard to stop spam mail and also any viruses or worms from attacking my computers. Hopefully, I will keep ahead of these guys. One thing I definitely do NOT want to do is see a charge of 1 cent per email as Bill Gates has proposed. Who is going to get charged? The recipient? How will we charge the sender that is in another country? Will everything go through Microsoft as Gates wants it to? Not a good idea at all in my opinion. End of editorial. I have no solution for this. Bette
Sorry Bette, but being a native Badger, I have to correct one item; Hudson is in Saint Croix county. It is on the Saint Croix River about 15 miles east of Saint Paul, MN. NSDAR VOLUNTEERS OFFER LOOKUPS. Do you think you might have an ancestor who served in the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783). Would you like to know whether your ancestor is listed with the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) in the "Patriot Index"? A helpful group of organized DAR VIS Volunteers monitor the RootsWeb DAR Message Board every day and welcome lookup requests. Include your Revolutionary War-era ancestor's first and last name, spouse's name (if known), dates of birth, death, and state of residence when posting your lookup request. You need not be interested in joining the NSDAR to request a lookup. Hi: If any of you happen to have family members interred in U.S. Veterans Cemeteries in the United States, you might find this site of value: http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov/j2ee/servlet/NGL_v1 If you want to take it for a test drive (and you don't have anyone in your tree buried in a V.A. facility, you could use the following individual: Family name: SCHWEINLER Given name: Francis You'd find he's interred in the Ft. Bunker cousins, Any one know the where-abouts of Kenneth Daniels formerly of Centreville VA? appreciate the help gil
We have new information about Dutch Bunkers who are related to German Bunkers. A few weeks ago, Maarten Hiltermann, a Dutch descendant of Dutch and German Bunkers, contacted Michael Buenker and sent him genealogical information which Michael shared with me. I'm going to pass this information along to BFA list members as well. Maarten has shared some fascinating information that links his Dutch Bunker ancestors to Michael's German (Steinfeld) Bunker ancestors. Here is Maarten's first message: Dear Michael and Maria Buenker, I found your e-mail address on the Internet and since I have two ancestors, brother and sister, with the name Buenker and coming from Steinfeld, I took the freedom to direct myself to you. Hopefully you can provide more information about them and possibly about earlier ancestors as well. I am also quite interested in any other historical data and information. My ancestor Caspar Henrich Hiltermann (1777-1853) married at Steinfeld on 10-07-1821 with Carolina Maria Frederica Bünker, born in Steinfeld in 1797. Another ancestor, Bernhard Ignatz Anton Hiltermann (1824-1883) married in 1853 in Amsterdam with Johanna Maria Emilie Bünker (1831-1863). She was a daughter of Johannes Bernardus Ignatius Bünker, born ca. 1794 in Steinfeld (died in Arnhem in 1846). He married at Dinklage on 26-08-1828 with Maria Catharina Elisabeth Regina Bahlmann (1807-1876). These two ancestors Bünker were brother and sister of each other and their parents were Johan Bernard Bünker and Maria Agnes Cordes. From them I have no other data. The earlier mentioned Johannes Bernardus Ignatius Bünker moved to Amsterdam and later to Arnhem and did very well in the textile bussiness together wi! th the Bahlmann's and later also the Hiltermann's. He died very rich. The couple got 7 children in Amsterdam and Arnhem but unfortunately all of them died young. One son, Anton Wilhelm Bünker(1838-1876) married in 1872 in Amsterdam with Elisabeth Carolina Von der Möhlen and they had a son Ignatius Alphonsus Maria Bünker (born in 1874 in Amsterdam) and a daughter(*1877). This son became a lawyer and lived in Aerdenhout in Holland and was married with Marguerite Povel. I have no knowledge of any descendants from him and have actually the impression that that family-branch died out with him in Holland. If you are interested I can provide you full names, birth dates, spouses etc of the other Amsterdam born Bünkers as well. I am Maarten Hiltermann, living in Rotterdam (De Lairesselaan 92; 3062 PK Rotterdam and tel. (31)10 2121096), e-mail: mm_hiltermann @hotmail.com Since I write a genealogy about our Hiltermann family I am interested in any information about our Bünker (and Bahlmann, Hoijer, Stinker, Pott, Cordes) ancestors. By the way, the Hiltermann families originate from Füchtorf and Laer (now Bad Laer), just 30 km. South of Osnabrück. Hoping to hear from you, kind regards, Maarten Hiltermann.
