Dear All, The appearence of the Bucks 1871 census has resulted in me asking again to see if we can find a Harry Bunker born 1872 in Illinois, U.S.A. , according to the 1881 British census, that census has Harry living with his grandfather Jonas Bunker in Eddlesborough in Buckinghamshire , England. The background is that Jonas born Eversholt . Bedfordshire in 1814 married a Mary Gray in 1833 , born Whipsnade , Bedfordshire, in Eddlesborough, Buckinghamshire . Their numerous children were all baptised , rather peculiarly in Tilsworth ,Bedfordshire of these only 2 sons survived long enough to become fathers ie John Samuel bpt 1847 and Joel bpt 1851, presumably one of these two was Harry's father. Can the Illinois records tell me which ,and who his mother was? I am not aware either was in America and why Harry only 9 years later was back in England living with his grandfather might be an interesting story. Brian Bunker.

New Bedford Public Library 613 Pleasant St. New Bedford, MA 02740 (508) 991-6275, ext. 15 www.ci.new-bedford.ma.us/SERVICES/LIBRARY/library2.htm This public library has microfilm of newspapers, passenger lists for the port of New Bedford, city directories, periodicals, and many volumes of local history. New Bedford was an important whaling town in nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the library acknowledges this history by featuring a searchable online database containing a comprehensive index to the men that went on the whaling voyages and the ships that they sailed on from 1810 to 1860. The information in the database is a direct word for word transcription of crew lists, shipping papers, and contracts for the voyages. You may search by crewman name, ship name, remarks, departure date, port of registry, and whaling ground. You can also find information on individual crewmen, when searching by residence, rank, even hair and skin color! The staff at the library is very helpful and has created guides to many of their collections to make your research easier. The center also claims to house "the most extensive collection of materials relating to a single municipality in New England." Their collections include the local history holdings of the Danvers Historical Society, the library, churches and town organizations, and town records. They also keep printed and manuscript collections on the history of Danvers, Salem Village, and the witchcraft trials. It also has extensive general genealogical resources such as census documents and passenger lists. Their website includes links to online resources that family historians will find useful. Nearly all public libraries in Massachusetts have local history collections. You might be missing an opportunity to conduct research in your ancestors' hometown if you don't contact those facilities first. Not only do they usually have clipping files and even archives, public libraries are great resources for reference materials and Internet resources that you might overlook. Private libraries and local historical societies also collect useful material. Before you rush to large institutions to research those Massachusetts family members, examine the resources where they originally settled. You might be surprised at what you discover. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----

Interesting that there is no record of her death. The SSDI says her last residence as Waterbury, CT but that does not mean she died there. SSDI gives her birth date as 19 Mar 1883 and death date 15 June 1966, last residence Waterbury. CT Death Index give her dod as 7 Mar 1966 Waterbury, age 82 widow. The Waterbury City directory lists her with a business in 1946, p. 374 and in 1964, pgs 90 and 154. There was a Ralph G. Bunker who lived in Woodbury (not Waterbury) who may have been her grandson. Wonder if she was there when she died or living some place else? What business did she own shortly before she died? Pam: Could you try again with the date of death as 7 Mar 1966? Just a little heads up for all of you that have Norton. Today there must have been some changes because all of a sudden Norton thinks my credit card statement and notices from My Family.com for additions to our family websites are spam and is pushing them into the spam folder. If you go to view and then look at the folder list you will see a folder in the inbox area marked Norton anti-spam folder. Check that out to be sure you are getting all the messages you really want to get. You can highlight the messages you want and click on the toolbar where it says "this is not spam." Apologies to all of you who do not have Norton but since so many of us do, I thought I would let you know. I was quite surprized to see my credit card statement whip through the inbox of my email so fast I hardly got a look at it. If I didn't get that, with my memory I would probably forget to pay the thing. ;-) Bette

Stones With Voices by Wendy Ledbetter Sometimes, headstones tell the purest stories, as is the case of that of the child of "died in the Antoine River, aged two years." More often, it takes some real research to fill in the blanks. And sometimes, despite the detective work, there are those deceased that refuse to give up their secrets. Consider the stone in the Okolona, Ark., public cemetery that reads, "Mrs. Crawford." The small monument appears fairly new and reveals nothing more than the name, but the inscription piques the imagination. Perhaps she was a teacher, known to her students and others in the community only as Mrs. Crawford. Maybe she left instructions that her stone would carry only these words. There seems to be no one left who remembers her and that may have been her intention all along. A large, ornate stone, especially from a century or more past, is often a sign of wealth and community status. Im reminded of the marker of a young wife in Dobeyville Cemetery, near Arkadelphia, Ark. The stone is the largest in the cemetery and carries a wealth of information about her family. For the family researcher, cemeteries hold a wealth of information. Here are some common-sense tips for those who love to spend time searching for family history in cemeteries. 1. Spellings, dates and places provide a starting place, but should be double-checked. Both the person providing the information and the craftsman creating the stone are human and errors are possible. 2. Dont forget to examine all sides of the stone. Childrens names and other information could be engraved on another face of the stone. Check the area. Family plots were common, especially in older cemeteries. 3. The stones themselves can offer some personal information in addition to the written words. Lambs are traditionally used on childrens graves, but other symbols might represent a favorite possession, animal or pastime. A career path or belief system could be represented. Hand clasped in prayer could be an indication of faith. Also note any symbols associated with organizations. Masons, Daughters of the American Revolution and some religious affiliations and personal accomplishments are often indicated with a medallion or icon. 4. Dont overlook the significance of the stone itself. When dealing with sketchy information, consider that the craftsmanship of the stone could indicate membership in an organization or nationality, or could at least give a clue to the person who crafted the stone, thus indicating a time period and circumstances of its placement. It also could indicate the familys financial status. 5. The place of burial is sometimes a clue in itself. Dont assume it to always be the case, but interment could indicate an affiliation with a particular family, race, social status or faith. Unfortunately, headstones deteriorate and precious information is wearing away from the fragile inscriptions. There are several groups working to preserve headstones. For information on historic preservation efforts in your area or to organize an effort to clean up a cemetery, visit www savinggraves-us.org/.
