[downloaded from Family Tree University, May 4, 2015] 6 Quick Tips for Czech and Slovak Genealogy Nearly 3.5 million Americans claim Czech or Slovak ancestry. If you count yourself among them, you’re undoubtedly eager to celebrate polka and pirohi in your past. But with your homeland’s well-known historical and political complexities, how do you start finding your family tree? 1. Learning key dates in history and having a basic knowledge of the administrative/political considerations is essential to tracing your Czech or Slovak ancestry. 2. Upon the formation of the Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy in 1867, Bohemia Moravia and Silesia were provinces administratively under Austria, while Slovakia remained under Hungarian control. 3. Although the Czech and Slovak republics were once united as one country (Czechoslovakia), there are a number of long-standing cultural differences between these two ethnic groups. 4. The Velvet Divorce of 1993 split the former Czechoslovakia into two countries—The Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic (Slovakia). 5. Czechs and Moravians largely began arriving in the United States in the 1850s; Slovaks and other ethnic groups from Upper Hungary began in the 1880s 6. Many early Czech and Slovak immigrants were so-called “birds of passage" who crossed the pond several times to earn enough money to buy land back home. I just located 10 Bedfordshire CDs (includes Charlestown and Nantucket branches) and 3 Devon (Includes James and Rattery descendants). This is the last of them and if anyone wants one, please send a check to Bette Richards, 1655 W. Ajo Way, Unit 399, Tucson, AZ 85713 for $22.50. When these are gone the books will only be available on flash drives. Please tell me which family - Devon or Bedfordshire - you want to buy when you send the check. Lat Mother's Day/early Father's Day present perhaps? Bette

Also, have one for an Email Stripper that is great. http://www.snapfiles.com/get/emstripper.html emailStripper is a free program for cleaning the ">" and other formatting characters out of your emails. It will restore "forwarded" or "replied" emails back to their original state so they`re easier to read.

A Richard Bunker's estate was probated in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1896 but I don't know which Richard this was. Does anyone have any idea? Bette
George's occupation listed in his probate in 1948 is watersider. This is the same as a stevedore or wharf worker but it is an interesting New Zealand term. Bette
You don’t often hear about it, but Native Americans participated in the Civil War as both Union and Confederate soldiers. Why would Native Americans be invested in a domestic dispute within the United States? After all the battles between Native Americans and American settlers over the previous two centuries, it wouldn’t seem the two groups would have any common ground in the Civil War. But they did, and 28,693 Native Americans joined up as soldiers and fought alongside those whom they had previously fought against in other wars. Here’s the forgotten history of the involvement of Native Americans in the Civil War, including why they fought and what roles they played. http://www.myheritage.com/ is a free site that looks interesting but I have not used. The Bunker Family database is way too big to move to an online site but for those of you with smaller databases may find this program a good one. Let me know if you have tried this or what happens when you do. Thanks. Bette
Family search has all the old Bunker genealogies and more on their website - books.FamilySearch.org <http://books.familysearch.org/>. Just remember this is outdated information and if you use any of it be sure to check to see if it has been corrected or added to. All genealogies have errors and all are updated to give different or more information as the years go on. These publications are fifty years old or more and you have to expect them to have errors. I keep the database as up to date as possible and regularly add information or make corrections in old data. Even the database of BFA is not free of errors nor is it totally up to date. Genealogies are always a work in progress. Bette

For any of you that might have served on Guam, you might find this interesting; hope so. Sally 1940 CENSUS NOW ONLINE AS DATABASE Written by Steve Limtiaco News Director for the Pacific Daily News April 15,2015 When the U.S. Census Bureau released the 1940 Guam census documents three years ago, it quickly became apparent that the information would be more useful for Guam residents if it could be searched by name and village. The Pacific Daily News took on the challenge, and the project took several weeks to complete. It involved retyping information from census documents, written mostly in cursive, into a new database. The results were posted online last week, at www.GuamPDN.com, to coincide with the return of former Sumay residents to the Sumay site on Naval Base Guam. The year 1940 was the last year a census was taken before World War II changed Guam, including the end of Sumay as a village. Our online search tool shows there were 1,998 people in Sumay when the 1940 census was taken. One of the benefits of this new search tool is the ability to track down family members who might have been living in other villages at the time of the 1940 census. The census documents show many residents were employed by other families and lived with those families. We worked carefully, but some names may be misspelled, likely because the documents or the census taker's handwriting were hard to read. If you notice a problem with the information, let us know, at [email protected], and we'll periodically revise the database. To use the search tool on the paper's website, enter the first or last name of the person for whom you are searching, or both. The pulldown menu allows you to narrow your search by village, but you can leave it at "none" for an islandwide search. If your search yields any results, information about that person will appear including their full name, their age in 1940, and the page number on which their name appears in the original census documents. Click on the link at the far right of the page to download the census document, then scroll to the page number to see the information about that person in the document. To find the next person, click "search again."
