Joyce asked why her German ancestors were called French Huguenots? (Her spelling was correct.) One of my ancestors was a French Huguenot from Poitou, France. The Huguenots were a Protestant minority in France. During the 1500s they were persecuted because of their religion. Many of them escaped to other countries, some to Germany, and to other European countries. My ancestor came to America in the late 1600s, not because of religious persecution but for the opportunities America offered. Joyce, I expect your ancestors left France for Germany in the 16th or 17th Century, but still clung to their religious origins from France. Hope this helps a little. Faith
