    3. Everyone has been so helpful pointing me in the right direction on previous questions that I thought I'd try my luck again! Has anyone heard of Marmaduke? I'm trying to research some information sent to me via "The Duckels Family Genealogy (1961)", which indicates that the surnames Duckels, Duckles, and DuCles mean "son of Marmaduke". I have searched every book I can get my hands on here in our public library, historical society, and old bookstores; I've searched many history and general sites on the internet; I believe I have posted previous messages (although perhaps not on this list). I can't find information on an historical figure named Marmaduke, although I think I may have heard of him years ago... Various unverified sources indicate the surname first appears in the Westphalia area of Germany, probably as Doeckles or Dueckles around the 12th century, then moved westward into Netherlands and Flanders around the 1400s. The name supposedly went to the UK with the engineer Cornelius Vermuyden (probably between 1626-1670), with members settling in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. On a different tangent, someone with a surname directory of Sussex advised that the name appears there as early as the 12th century. Has anyone heard of Marmaduke in any of these areas? Any leads would be appreciated! Vicki DUCKLESS Flanders New Hampshire USA
