Greetings to all, I have just discovered that my g.grandfather Karl SCHMIDT a baker in the US (b. 1840) came from Wilhelmsbrg. near Hamburg. His family owned a brewery there. He and a brother Joseph (b. 1844) emigrated to the USA. He met and married my g.grandmother, Wilhemina WEISSER (b. 07 Nov, 1856 )in the Hamburg area (we believe). Her application for "resident alien" status in the USA says she came from Lieufen??? Leufen???. It is very difficult to read. Family legend says her family was quite poor and his family was unhappy about the marriage. Her family were farmers? - Does anyone know anything about a brewery owned by a SCHMIDT family in Wilhelmsbrg abt. 1860-ish? or anything about the family? - Is anyone out there familiar with the Wilhelmsbrg. region near Hamburg to know if there is any geographical reference to Lieufen??? Leufen???. Perhaps a street name, a building name, a park name, that might indicate a village of that (or similar) name existed nearby in the mid 19th century? Any information will be gratefully accepted, no matter how small. Sometimes the smallest bit is the key to the mystery. Thanks so much for anything you are able to offer. Searching Schmidts is difficult because there are so many unrelated. Cheers Cate Daniell New Mexico, USA
