    3. Everyone has been so helpful pointing me in the right direction on previous questions that I thought I'd try my luck again! Has anyone heard of Marmaduke? I'm trying to research some information sent to me via "The Duckels Family Genealogy (1961)", which indicates that the surnames Duckels, Duckles, and DuCles mean "son of Marmaduke". I have searched every book I can get my hands on here in our public library, historical society, and old bookstores; I've searched many history and general sites on the internet; I believe I have posted previous messages (although perhaps not on this list). I can't find information on an historical figure named Marmaduke, although I think I may have heard of him years ago... Various unverified sources indicate the surname first appears in the Westphalia area of Germany, probably as Doeckles or Dueckles around the 12th century, then moved westward into Netherlands and Flanders around the 1400s. The name supposedly went to the UK with the engineer Cornelius Vermuyden (probably between 1626-1670), with members settling in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. On a different tangent, someone with a surname directory of Sussex advised that the name appears there as early as the 12th century. Has anyone heard of Marmaduke in any of these areas? Any leads would be appreciated! Vicki DUCKLESS Flanders New Hampshire USA

    3. Dear Joyce and Others: I appreciated the posting regarding the French Huguenots. My greatgrandfather August BARTZ's family came from Klein Ziethen, Brandenburg. They were German Lutherans, but the village of Klein Ziethen was made up largely of Belgian Huguenots. Many of the German Lutherans and Belgian Huguenots of the area immigrated to Kewanee, Illinois, where they established Lutheran and Reformed Congregations. There are three Klein Ziethens in Brandenburg. Our Klein Ziethen is northeast of Berlin. Ron Kuehner

    3. Joyce asked why her German ancestors were called French Huguenots? (Her spelling was correct.) One of my ancestors was a French Huguenot from Poitou, France. The Huguenots were a Protestant minority in France. During the 1500s they were persecuted because of their religion. Many of them escaped to other countries, some to Germany, and to other European countries. My ancestor came to America in the late 1600s, not because of religious persecution but for the opportunities America offered. Joyce, I expect your ancestors left France for Germany in the 16th or 17th Century, but still clung to their religious origins from France. Hope this helps a little. Faith

    3. We have heard that our German ancestors were called French Huguenots (spelling unclear) and I can't find exactly what the name refers to. We thought that at one time France controlled an area where they came from which is referred to as the Palatinate on some of our papers. Would appreciate any explanation. Thanks a lot, Joyce

They produce 4 newsletters a year with some good background info in. hope this of help. Caroline NZ
