    3. Have you tried looking up the castle, if it exists, on Encyclopaedia Brittanica or similar? We found a Schloss Buddenberg through that, it's worth a try! Caroline Stockdale, searching BUDENBERG Auckland, NZ -----Original Message----- From: LauraWickl@aol.com [mailto:LauraWickl@aol.com] Sent: Wednesday, 4 November 1998 17:06 To: BUNDESLAND-L@rootsweb.com Subject: KRUMHOLTZ or von KRUMHOLTZ Hi, Is there anyone else out there researching this surname???... KRUMHOLTZ I am trying to find info on the parents of Anna (KRUMHOLTZ) SADLER of Baltimore, MD (b. ca 1850's). She m. James SADLER ca 1880. Anna's parents came to the US in mid to late 1800's (estmation based on family stories). Her father was said to have been a General in the German or Prussian Army (von KRUMHOLTZ). The family also is said to have lived in a large castle. I do not have any more details than this and absolutely no documentation. I was wondering if anyone researching this family would be able to fill in some missing peices. Any info would be appriciated! Thanks, Laura

There are many different books like this one, and each of these authors often has a different opinion. Onomastics or onomastology, which is the science of the history of names, is full of theories. Not every name's origin is absolutely sure, especially those surnames which are of Germanic or Pre-Germanic origin. I know there > should be an umlaut over the u. Thanks There is no town of Wuert or Würt in modern day Germany. Wuert seems to be the abbreviation of the province of Wuerttemberg which now is a part of the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg in the SW of Germany. It includes the towns of Stuttgart, Tuebingen, parts of the Lake Constance, the Swabian Alb, the towns of Ulm, and much more. The Black Forest mainly is in the Baden part. Does anyone know > whether this is true, or if it is not - what could it be? > > Any help would be appreciated. You can check this by yourself by going to the German White Pages on line (http://www.teleauskunft.de). I just found one company with this name - no private people. EISEN is a German surname and means iron. ISEN is also a German surname and originates in Eisen. The English 'ei' is pronounced like a German 'i' and 'ie', and the English 'i' and 'ie' is pronounced like the German 'ei'. English natives who don't understand German often mix this up. It's difficult to say from where EISAN comes from. One can not know if this surname mistakenly became Anglizised when the ancestor emigrated. The emigration officer did not speak/write/understand German, the emigrant did not speak/write/understand English. The officer wrote what he phonetical heard. The emigrant said "Yes." because the surname phonetically sounded like the German surname and was not aware of the different spelling. Think about this when researching in Germany. It's a mistake which very often comes up in these days. Best regards, Johannes Sempert from Germany
