The following is a list of the children of John and Lydia COMBS of Montgomery County, Kentucky. John COMBS was a farmer who appears to have arrived in Montgomery County, Kentucky in 1794 or possibly in 1791. He is believed to have lived with his brother Daniel COMBS until he was 21 years of age. John and Lydia COMBS had eleven children: 1. Emily SMALLEY. Emily (COMBS) SMALLEY was born in Montgomery County, Kentucky in about 1820. She moved to Putnum County Indiana with her husband Jackson SMALLEY (b: abt 1816). Jackson SMALLEY had 40 acres on a warranty deed from Joseph TAYLOR, dated 28 DEC 1849. This land was located in the SE quarter of the SW quarter, township 16, range 4, section 24. Information was recorded in Putnum County, Book O, page 468. The children known to this family are Alfred (b: abt 1841), Jackson (b: abt 1844), Josaphine (b: abt 1854), Martha C. (b: abt 1839), Riley (b: abt 1859), Susan B. (B: abt 1844), Theba (b: abt 1847), William, (b: abt 1857), and William O. (B: abt 1849). 2. Laneigh "Laney" YEATES or YATES. Laney (COMBS) YATES was born in Montgomery County, Kentucky in about 1829. She was married to William W. YATES (b: abt 1822. William W. YATES is the son of Duleena (BADGER) and Wilson W. YATES of Putnum County, Indiana. William YATES changed the spelling of the last name some time after the Civil War. It is believed that Laney YATES died in Putnum County, Indiana prior to 1864. William W. YATES moved his family to Buchanan County, Missouri some time after the death of his wife. William W. YATES died in Buchanan County, Missouri. However, William W. YATES is not buried in that county. It is possible that he was buried in Putnum County, Indiana with his wife. Laney and William W. YATES had the following children: George Anna (b: abt 1849), John Owens (b: abt 1852), Nannie L. (b: abt 1855), William J. (b: abt 1857), and Martin Tyler (b: abt 1847). 3. Polly JOHNSON. Polly (COMBS) JOHNSON was born in Montgomery County, Kentucky in about 1821. She is believed to be married to a James JOHNSON, the son of John and Amasa JOHNSON. John JOHNSON died in Putnum County, Indiana leaving a will and probate records dated MAR 1840. The family may have moved to Boone County, Indiana after the death of John JOHNSON. The following are the known children of Polly JOHNSON: Emma (b: unknown), Jacob (b: unknown), Leoma KING (b: unknown), and Nancy (b: unknown). Polly JOHNSON died prior to 1864. James JOHNSON was awarded guardianship of the children by Montgomery County, Kentucky in 1864. 4. Malinda GILLEN. Malinda (COMBS) GILLEN was born in Montgomery County, Kentucky in about 1827. She was married to Willis Y. GILLEN (b: abt 1805). Willis Y. GILLEN was recorded as being a farmer in the 1850 and 1860 Putnum County, Indiana Census. Malinda and Willis had the following children: Benjamin J. (B: abt 1839), Columbus (b: abt 1843), Emily (b: abt 1833), John (b: abt 1850), Lucinda (b: abt 1842), Lydia (b: abt 1836), Mary (b: abt 1842), Nancy (b: abt 1855), Rachel (b: abt 1837), and Tighlman (b: abt 1845). 5. Andrew Jackson COMBS. Between January and April of 1864 Andrew Jackson COMBS was traveling to Ray County, Missouri to obtain some land. On his return trip to Montgomery County, Kentucky he became ill and went to Carpentersville, Indiana. Documents indicate that he went there to be with a sister. Which sister is not known. Andrew Jackson COMBS died in Carpenterville in 1864. His wife (Sarah Ann (ROGERS) COMBS, is buried in Clay County, Missouri. Andrew Jackson COMBS burial site has never been located. It is possible that he was buried in Putnum County, Indiana with other family members. Andrew Jackson COMBS married Sarah Ann ROGERS, the daughter of Horace and Elizabeth ROGERS, the granddaughter of William and Patsy ROGERS of Montgomery County, Kentucky. 6. Jason COMBS. Married Hannah FOSTER, the daughter of Thomas FOSTER. Jason and Hannah moved from Montgomery County, Kentucky to Buchanan County, Missouri. Jason B. COMBS (b: 11 NOV 1817, Montgomery County, KY; d: 1 FEB 1860, near Wallace, Buchanan County, MO) sp-Hannah FOSTER (b: 14 AUG 1829, Montgomery County, KY; d: 29 SEP 1886, near Wallace, Buchanan County, MO). 7. Lucinda COMBS (b: abt 1813, Montgomery County, KY; d: 1 MAR 1881, Ralls County, MO) sp-Walker C. CARTER (b: 3 JUN 1816, Montgomery County, KY; d: abt 1846, Ralls County, MO). 8. Nancy Ann COMBS (b: 31 JAN 1823, Montgomery County, KY; d: 8 JAN 1871, Montgomery County, KY) sp-John H. MARK (b: 21 MAR 1817, d: 6 NOV 1909, Montgomery County, KY). 9. Sarah Elizabeth COMBS (b: abt 1825, Aarons Run Creek, Montgomery County, KY) sp-James BULLOCK (b: abt 1818, KY). 10. Phebe A. COMBS (b: abt 1826, Montgomery County, KY) married 2 Jan 1844, Bourbon Co, KY, John V. MOORE (b: 14 Feb 1822, Plum Lick, Bourbon/Montgomery Cos, KY). Had two sons who were privates in D Company, 8th Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry, CSA (an element of Morgan's Raiders) - Richard F MOORE (killed at Lebanon, KY), and Kelly P. MOORE. 11. Walker Carter COMBS (b: abt 1833, Montgomery County, KY) sp-Louisa I. _____ (b: abt 1834, KY). Lived in Bourbon County, Kentucky after the Civil War. Was a member of G Company, 4th Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry, CSA (part of Morgans Raiders).. Enlisted 7 AUG 1862 at Abington, Virginia. Was wounded and captured 7 JUN 1864, Mount Sterling, Kentucky. Was a prisoner of war at Camp Chase, Ohio. Released as a prisoner exchange 21 FEB 1865. Did not return to the Confederate Army upon release. Michael R.
