    1. [BULLOCK-L] Comfort Bullock Problem
    2. Jim Bullock
    3. Some of us have a problem in our Comfort Bullock + Holmes Wightman line. I have Comfort as the _son_ of Israel and Sarah (Brown) Bullock. I assumed that he was a male because I showed that he had a son named Comfort Bullock, who married Sibble Peirce. But I now have good evidence that Holmes Wightman was the husband and Comfort Bullock was the wife. (However, this appears to be a different Comfort than the child of Israel and Sarah--see below.) First, I checked to see if the name Comfort was used for both males and females and found that it was. I found other men named Comfort in lists of freemen. And I found daughters named Comfort in several wills. What I have on Holmes Wightman and Comfort Bullock is this: On page 574 of _Genealogies of Rhode Island, Vol. II_, a collection of articles from "The New England Historical and Genealogical Register", is an article entitled "Inscriptions in Family Burial Grounds at North Kingston and Exeter, R. I." Under "Wightman Burial Ground" ("at Quidnessett, on the Wightman (now the Cedar Crest) Farm") is included the inscription "Comfort, wife of Holmes Wightman, d. Feb. 19, 1818, in 73d year". Notice the age and compare to that of Israel and Sarah's Comfort. The Comfort of Israel and Sarah would have been 76 on the above date of death. Also listed in the same Wightman Burial Ground are: George, son of Holmes & Comfort Wightman, d. Nov. 8,1773, aged 7 years, 6 months, 18 days. Holmes Wightman, d. Jan. 18, 1817, aged 70. Sarah, dau. of Holmes & Comfort Wightman, d. Feb. 15, 1780, in 7th year. There are about 30 other Wightmans lised in this burial ground. The Comfort who married Holmes is Comfort Bullock according to Arnold in his Rehoboth VRs, where he lists their marriage from vol. 3, p. 347 as: Bullock, Comfort of Rehoboth and Holmes Wightman of North Kingstown, married by Rev. Ephraim Hyde April 12, 1768. Int. March 1, 1768. Conclusions: Comfort Bullock, who married Holmes Wightman, is a female. Holmes and Comfort are not the parents of Comfort Bullock who married Sibble Peirce. (Their children would have been named Wightman, not Bullock.) Comfort (Bullock) Wightman is probably not the child of Israel Bullock and Sarah Brown. (Different ages at date of death.) Comfort Bullock, child of Israel & Sarah, was probably a male. (Because of being named after the father.) Maybe someone has documentation to verify this? Questions: Who did Comfort, child of Israel & Sarah, marry? Is there any documentation that he was father of Comfort who married Sibble Peirce? Jim Bullock Littleton, CO
