I have a copy of a book written in the 1960s by Norman Leonard DALBY, "DALBY Family History." Len had been an attorney and a judge, and was very thorough in his documentation. The "Founding Mother" of my line of DALBYs was Nancy Ann BULLOCK DALBY, so the BULLOCK family figures prominantly in the book. I have looked at many of the BULLOCK family web pages and have not seen any reference to this information, but have seen much about Granville Co NC and Bedford Co, TN, both of which are counties where my Bullock/Dalbys resided. I feel like this is relevant information that may not have been tapped by BULLOCK researchers. Note that I am quoting from the book. These ARE NOT my words. begin: As in the case of the Dalby family, members of several branches of the BULLOCK family came from England to various parts of Colonial Virginia during the 17th century. The earliest of my BULLOCK ancestors with whom I can establish a direct line of descent is Richard BULLOCK (hereinafter called Richard, Sr.) who resided in York and New Kent Counties, Virginia, at least as early as 1662. There is some strong indication that his father was also named Richard, but since there are records of several Richard BULLOCKs in various counties of Colonial Virginia, there is a variance of opinion as to who his father actually was. I have not been able to find records from which I can satisfactorily identify his parents, and due to the limitations of time, I will have to leave the persuit of that matter to the younger members of the family. Richard BULLOCK, Sr., was born about 1641, and though there are some who believe that he was born in England, I believe the indications are stronger that he was born in York County, Virginia. At least, he was living in York County on August 25, 1662, for he testified as a witness in a paternity suit in a court in York County on that date, giving his age as 21 years. (York County Deeds, Orders & Wills, 1657-62, Virginia State Library). A Dorothy BULLOCK also testified as a witness in the same suit on the same day, and it seems likely, though not proven, that she was the wife of Richard, Sr. It appears the Richard, Sr., was living in New Kent County, Virginia, between 1668-69, and it has been reported that he died in New Kent County in 1702. He had three children: Richard, JR., who appears to have been the father of "Richard of Granville"; Edward, of whom I am a direct descendant, and who I will hereinafter refer to as Edward BULLOCK, Sr.; and James. In connection with the above, I cite the following references: Book 6, page 161, Virginia Land Office, Virginia State Library, Richmond, Virginia; Vestry Book & Register of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent & James Citty Counties, Virginia, 1684-1786, by C. G. Chamberlayne, The Library Board, Richmond (1937); Colonial Granville County, by Worth S. Ray (1945). It is indicated here that Edward BULLOCK, Sr., son of Richard, Sr., was born between 1665-1670, probably in New Kent County. He lived in New Kent County until at least 1704, and later resided in Hanover County, Virginia, where he died between 1735-1739. He was married about 1690, and his wife's name was Sarah. they had the following children: John; David; Dorothy; Richard; Edward, of whom I am a direct descendant, and of whom I will hereafter refer to as Edward BULLOCK, Jr.; and probably one other child. In connection with the above, I cite the following references: Register of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia, by Chamberlayne (1937); Vestry Book of St. Paul's Parish for Hanover County, Virginia, 1706-1786, Chamberlayne (1940); Quit Rents of Virginia, 1704, by A. L. W. Smith (1957); English Duplicates of Lost Virginia Records, Cognets (1958); Plantes of Colonial Virginia, by J. T. Wertonberger (1922); Virginia Magazine, Vol. 3, page 215, 1923. My discussion and citations concerning the first two generations, above, have been rather limited due to the apparent lack of time I have in which to finish this writing. However, I am a direct descendant of two of the children of Edward BULLOCK, Jr., and there are certain matters of information concerning him and his children that are important in dealing with later generations. therefore, it will be necessary that I treat the succeeding generations in much more detail. end. That was 1 1/2 pages of the book. It continues with 20 more pages of information on Edward BULLOCK, Jr., his son Micahjah BULLOCK and daughter Christean (Christian) BULLOCK, and Micajah's children, focusing on his daughter Nancy Ann BULLOCK m. Knight DALBY. Ann and Knight DALBY resided in Granville Co, NC, then moved to Bedford Co, TN with several family memebers. Knight died in Bedford Co, and Ann took several family memebers to the Republic of Texas in 1939. I hope someone can use this inforamtion to fill in some gaps of find relationships between lines. I can provide the rest of the BULLOCK information if requested to do so. Shannon shannond[email protected]
