Islands in the Carribean were known as the West Indies in early colonial history, just as both Bermuda and Virginia were the same land grant "way back when". Jamaica, for example, is an island in the West Indies south of Cuba. When those islands are referred to as a group they are West Indies rather as an individual island with its own name.---ila41430@aol.com
