Rentia, Jan, Connie en Lee Vreemdelinge in die stede wat VOC-kantore gehad het moes losies vind vir die tydperk wat hulle gewag het totdat nuwe werknemers gewerf word. Die verskaffers van losies, volkhouer of –houdster genoem, het nie alleen kos en huisvesting verskaf nie, maar ook ‘n skeepskis en uitrusting vir die vaart. Op hierdie manier is daar dus aan die voornemende werknemer geld voorgeskiet. By diensaanvaarding het die werknemer ‘n transportbrief geteken wat aan die volkhouer uitbetaal moes word sodra die werknemer genoeg verdien het om die skuld te kan delg. Hierdie transportbriewe was later meestal vir ‘n bedrag van 150 gulde uitgemaak. Omdat die sterftesyfer op skepe en in Asie so hoog was, is die transportbriewe in baie gevalle nie uitgetaal nie omdat die werknemer dood is voordat hy sy skuld kom afwerk. Om daardie rede is die transportbriewe dikwels aan ander teen ‘n laer bedrag verkoop. Die volkhouer het dus sy reg op die volle bedrag prysgegee ter wille daarvan om darem iets te ontvang. Dit was wel die geval vir die tydperk wat hy ondersoek het. In my vorige e-pos het ek na Ketting verwys wat gevind het dat heel aan die begin, die transportbriewe die werklike skuld aangetoon het, maar later gestandardiseer is. In Engels is die term “press gang” en “impressment” gebruik en in Engeland het hulle, soos Lee se, iemand dronk gemaak en dan gedwing om by die vloot aan te sluit. Byvoorbeeld van 1640-1649 het 73 van die 345 werknemers wat van Amsterdam gekom het transportbriewe geteken, dit wil sê 21%. Dus Nederlanders het ook van sielverkopers gebruik gemaak en, al het hulle tot ‘n beperkte mate hulp van die sielverkoper ontvang, het hulle nog die afgeronde bedrag betaal.
