Carel bevind hom van kindsbeen af langs die Kaalspruit. Reeds vanaf 1958 woon en boer hy op Syferkuil in die Hartbeesfontein-distrik. As jong man raak hy betrokke by die kerk, skool, kinderhuis en n verskeindenheid van gemeenskaps- en landbouorganisasies en lewer deurgaans n onontbeerlike diens. Dit is dus logies dat hy uitsonderlike kennis van sy kontrei, asook van die mense-, natuur en geografiese gesteldheid daarvan het. Hierdie agtergrond, tesame met sy skerp waarnemingsvermoë, liefde vir sy kultuurerfenis en bereidheid tot boekstawing van streeksgeskiedenis, kulmineer in sy besondere skryfwerk soos vervat in verskeie publikasies. Hierby kan sy besondere belangstelling in filatelie (seëlversameling), wat in 1978 begin het met seels van die ou ZAR, gevoeg word. Vir sy navorsing en versamelings oor verskeie onderwerpe het hy reeds verskeie toekennings ontvang. ONDERWERP VAN PRAATJIE: Ons en Hulle tydens die ABO is die onderwerp waarop Carel, aan die hand van die boek Boereverraaiers, gaan uitbrei. Die Ons en Hulle van die ABO is veral in die Hartebeesfontein en Klerksdorp omgewing op die spits gedryf. Hartebeesfontein was op n stadium bekend as Little England - tot so mate dat selfs in die Klerksdorpse konsentrasiekamp, asook die St. Helena-krygsgevangekamp mense uit dieselfde omgewing in twee groepe verdeel was, boere vs. engelsgesindes. Mense het die oorlogspoging versaak om redes van hul eie. Families is uitmekaar gedryf. Buurman het teen buurman, broer het teen broer, ouer het teen kind in konflik gekom. Altyd was daar die Ons en die Hulle en elkeen het waarskynlik na sy gewete (reg) opgetree. Persone ter sprake is o.a. die terreggestelde verraaiers Theunissen, De Beer en De Bruin wat sentreer rondom die plaas Lapfontein, Noord van Klerksdorp (en die gebeure op Lapfontein), asook die baie bekende Genl. Piet Cronje en sy broer Andries van die plaas Goedgevonden. Dit is minder bekend dat Andries Cronje en Jacobus Theunissen twee van die welvarendste boere wes van Potchefstroom was. Die onlangse film, Verraaiers is gebasseer op die tragiese verhaal van Theunissen en sy mense. Good afternoon Is anyone researching the Gillham family? I have just discovered that my great grandfather, Isaac James Hubbard (widower)married Lillian Gillham (widow) in Durban in 1896.It came as a huge surprise as I have always known him to live in the Eastern Cape. Die Tannie het haar heup beseer en is nou bedlêend en oom Jan loop met suurstof. Die kinders moet nou hulle sake behartig en daarvoor is hulle huweliks Sertifikaat nodig. Oom Jan was n neef van my oorlede skoonvader en Barend Leach het ons gehelp om hom op te spoor.
