Hi Jan, I am also researching the CLIFTON surname, which as you say often pops up as CLIFFEN, and my family went by CLIFFORD as well. Mine are in the Tingewick/Buckingham/Finmere OXF area from about 1777 up through 1900. I haven't managed to make any connection to the Quainton CLIFTONs yet, but there could yet be one pre-1770 as the distance between the two areas is less than 10 miles. Please let me know some details of your CLIFTON/CLIFFENs offlist, and we'll compare notes.
