    3. How remarkably sensible, Kevin, stating the obvious which the rest of us had forgotten to mention. We know George wasn't married in 1851 (census shows him as unmarried & living with his parents), so he must have married between then & (probably) the birth of his first child. Not many years, I expect. Add the birth record of William, & all will be incontrovertibly established. Look on http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/, & we find the marriage of George Birch registered in the 3rd (September) quarter if 1852 in Amersham district. Ref = volume 3a, page 443. On the same page are Mary Bond, Maria Pedder & Isaac Rose (in that order). So he probably married Mary Bond, maybe Maria Pedder. Hmmm. Well I never! There's a Mary Bond, aged 22, in Chesham in the 1851 census. Not from round here, though. Not /*Local.*/ Silk worker, lodging with David Rose, brush maker, his wife Ann, silk worker, & a couple of others, all from the same furrin West Country parts except David. Maria Pedder was in Great Missenden, aged 18. So was Isaac, widower of 39 & (apparently) cradle-snatcher. So, Caroline, you see what these lovely census CDs can do for you. I confidently expect the 1861 to show George (33 b Chesham) & Mary (32 b Shepton Mallett) Birch. Oh, & look at the IGI.
