I am wondering if someone can help with a place in Bucks where my ancestor (Sarah Andrews) says she was born back in the 1780s. I have looked in Phillimore's Atlas, on Parloc and on a modern map but cannot find anything, so hoping there is a lister with local knowledge who can help. It is obviously not a known parish so is more likely to be a small hamlet somewhere. I have on the 1861 census (RG9 793 96 Tottenham MDX) what looks like Bradley, on the 1871 census (RG10 1649 20 Barking ESS) it looks like Bradly or Bradby. Unfortunately she had died by 1881 (she had lived to the age of 89 so don't think she was worried) and I do not know where she was living in 1851, but as it was most likely to be in London, I am going to have to wait for Ancestry or someone else to complete an index otherwise it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. Thanks Gillian
Gillian... Brackley, perhaps? Listed variously as being in Bucks, Oxon or Northants at www.old-maps.co.uk , it is nowadays just over the border in Northants. Try co-ordinates 458500,237500 at www.streetmap.co.uk for a modern map or at www.old-maps.co.uk for an 1885 version (choose the Northants option - the other two are blank.) Mike the Map Man

Not as such. We can do you Bradwell in North Bucks, where Andrews do not seem to happen; Bragengham in Soulbury - no obvious Andrews; Beadlow - nothing likely; Bradenham near High Wycombe - well, some fairly near in 1798 in Radnage, Wooburn etc Marlow even - Boveney in Marlow is just about a possible/ Bledlow comes up as Bredlow at times, but no likely Andrews seen; It could be a minute hamlet or even a single house, like Hardtofind. I'll think about it. -- Eve McLaughlin Author of the McLaughlin Guides for family historians Secretary Bucks Genealogical Society
