Ron, I can't find any Tofields in Great Missenden in 1851, 1871, 1881 or 1891*. Are you sure that's where he was from? What do you know about John & Ann? Names & ages of children (by the way, a birth certificate of a child would show Anns maiden name), places or approximate years of birth for either John or Ann would help locate them. The more you tell people, the easier it is for them to help you. *In the 1881 census, the only John Tofield in England married to an Ann was a farmer in Stewkley (where almost all the other Tofields were), & he & his wife were both 55. Way back, in the C16 there were Tofields (sometimes as Tockfield, which makes it reasonable that the original name was derived from Tocqueville in France.) They are in the neighbourhood after this, but I agree, they seem to have upped sticks in the C19, unless they popped back briefly, between censuses. The group in Stewkley area are flourishing and Neil Rees is a descendant. > >*In the 1881 census, the only John Tofield in England married to an Ann >was a farmer in Stewkley -- Eve McLaughlin Author of the McLaughlin Guides for family historians Secretary Bucks Genealogical Society
