One of my ancestors is an Isaac Oakley b 1824, m Sophia Roadnight 1845, d 7th May 1848. It was a marriage of only three years and produced one child, another Isaac who is my Gt Grandfather. What has intrigued me is that I have recently got his death certificate, and it states his cause of death as "decline 3 years" It is all a bit vague, but coincidentally 3 years was also the duration of the marriage. So smelling rats that might not have been detectable by forensic scientists in the mid 1800s, exactly what would be meant by decline? Is there any likelyhood of there being any other record of this event than the PRs and Death certs?

At a guess, the death was not certified by a medical practitioner. This was often the case at that time, hence some of the more "fanciful" causes of death; 'Visitation from God' being one of them. Decline could just mean slowly becoming more ill/aged. The marriage and onset of the decline are probably coincidental, but one could hypothesise that the marriage was either a) causal [he was hen-pecked] or b) symptomatic [he knew his health was declining, so married someone, quickly]. Obviously, there is no way of knowing which, if any, of those is true. > Is there any likelyhood of there being any other record of this event > than the PRs and Death certs? Sadly, no. And the only people that do know are long since deceased. -- Regards _ / ) "The blindingly obvious is / _)rad never immediately apparent" A friend of a friend he got beaten I Predict A Riot - Kaiser Chiefs
