The GRO indexes, as found on Ancestry, FreeBMD and Findmypast, are just indexes to the actual records, plus they are transcriptions of transcriptions so there is plenty of room for errors to creep in. Add to that the returns from the register office would have been handwritten, so it's very likely that the GRO clerk misread the register office clerk's writing and the error has never been picked up until now. I'd very strongly suggest that you use FreeBMD's postem system to let others know that Emma TUG should be Emma ING. FreeBMD won't correct their transcription as it's a faithful transcription of the GRO register.
