Martin, definitely the same Emma Jane & Mary Ann. According to FreeBMD, there is a death of a Mary Ann HUDSON in 1898 aged 71. There is a Mary Ann HUDSON in the 1891 census at High Wycombe, aged 64 - a widow, born Mortimers Cross, Hertfordshire, living at 1 Line Cottage with her son Francis, 26, born Overton, Hampshire. There's also an Emma Jane EAST, 25, born Overton, Hampshire, wife of John EAST, living at 1 Park Street. The 1881 census confirms that Emma Jane is 15, & the daughter of Mary Ann - but Mary Ann is shown as aged 63, wife of James HUDSON, 70, papermaker b Hollingbourne, Kent - but he appears as 60, born Carshalton Surrey in the 1871 census, wife Mary A 45 born Mortimers Cross Herefordshire (which should be right - there is a Mortimers Cross in Herefordshire, but not in Hertfordshire). The 1871 census shows them with a daughter Agnes M, born Quenington Gloucestershire. The 1861 census shows James in Whitchurch (46, born Surrey - Wellington?), Mary Ann aged 33 in Quenington, living among other paper makers with daughter Agnes Margaret & sister Emma Jane BYRNE? (not that easy to read) born Wells, Somerset. A rather nomadic family. James obviously moved from paper mill to paper mill around the country. BMD shows an Emma J Hudson registered March qtr 1866 in Whitchurch H district, which is right for Overton, & the right age. All the other children are as in the 1881 census. The only BEST in Wycombe in 1891 is Georgina C., 19, born Eastbourne Sussex, single & manageress of a hairdressers. There's a FreeBMD marriage of a James HUDSON on the same page as a Mary Ann BYRNE Dec 1858 in Wells district. Quenington baptisms - http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/GLS/Quenington/Baptisms1841to1891.html Agnes Margaret Hudson dau James & Mary Ann chr 24 Jun 1860 Emma Jane BYRNE seems to have remained unmarried, & died in 1902 (FreeBMD, Cheltenham district). Servant in Weston House, Cheltenham in 1871 & 1881, born Wookey, Somerset. Paul
Hello Martin. Thnks for this. It looks as though I can connect this Emma Jane nee Hudson EAST to her father, James HUDSON the paper maker, and the mother, Mary Ann HUDSON; in respect of the burial and death certificate for Aug 1898. You add: > Emma J HUDSON birth registered 1Q 1866 Whitchurch (covers Overton, Hamshire) Vol 2c page 202< and given me the entry for the family in 1871C Whitchurch, Hampshire. >From the other census data I have for another HUDSON line, which also "mirrors" several of the Christian names in the family above, I eventually might resolve where my rellies came from. Watch this space! Thank you all.
