I have rechecked the two 1871 , 1881 and 1891 census for Mary Ann Hudson born Mortimers Cross, Herefordshire The 1871 gives age 45 The 1881 gives age 63 The 1891 gives age 64 For the 1871 and 1891 census I have been able to check the actual images of the original pages on line - as yet it is not possible to do this for the 1881 census and you have to reply upon the transcription The 1881 census was the first major transcription effort of its kind and carried our by volunteers from the Mormon Church it is unfortunately well known for being inaccurate I think it is very unlikely that there would be two Mary Ann Hudsons both born Mortimers Cross, Herefordshire both married to a James HUDSON both living in the same area of High Wycombe both with a son called Francis (Frances) born the same year in Overton, Hampshire! I note that Francis is 6 in the 1871 census, 16 in the 1881 and 26 in the 1819 so I guess that Mary's age in the 1881 must be an error. regards Martin ----- Original Message ----- From: Joan To: Martin Samson Sent: Sunday, March 08, 2009 3:42 PM Subject: Re: Re-Emma Jane East Wycombe Hello Martin. Re the 2 census entries you sent, below, viz 1881 at Little London; and the 1901 in Line Cottage Wycombe. The ages for the 2 Marys are the same - if you haven't made a typo. Should be 10 years difference??? Please confirm they are correct as shown, if not too much trouble. (I don't have access to 1891C.) Does make a difference. BTW. Had you noticed that Mary was having children at a great age! I wonder how many she had. But, please don't look for me. VBG. I don't think she's mine. The 1901C details are of a different family, I think. Many thanks. Joan. ----- Original Message ----- From: Martin Samson To: Joan Sent: Saturday, March 07, 2009 11:23 PM Subject: Re-Emma Jane East Wycombe Joan Do you have the extract from the 1881 census? Hi Joan and Martin, I looked at the image on Ancestry and it does say 53 age for Mary Ann Hudson, but has one of those check marks through it which makes it look like 63. However it does say she is born Mortimers Cross, Herts., which is an enumeration error.
