Hi Paul My John is in the 1841 census for Chilton age 90 so would have been born somewhere between 1747 & 1751..he says he was born "out of county" but at that age might not have known whether the answer to the question was yes or no! So really he could have come from anywhere. Yes I did take the Ashenden John from the IGI but from the extracted entries on the Hugh Wallis site. He was the son of William & Elizabeth Playstead. I assumed he was the John who married Mary Spenser. A very dangerous thing to do I know!!!! But I have been looking for several years. Think I will put the problem away again and maybe something will turn up later. So really he could have come from anywhere. We don't know that John was ever asked for the information about his age and place of birth - unless he was the only person in the household when the enumerator called then the information about his assumed age and place of birth may have been given by someone else in the household using their best guess/knowledge.
I'd treat the "out of county" with suspicion. The Oxfordshire Marriage Index shows very few Plesteads, & they're mostly clustered along the Bucks border, in Thame, Towersey, etc. No sign of your John being born there, though.
