    3. If you look at the 1851 census, you'll see that it gives his place of birth as Bledlow, not Aylesbury (age 62). This is very convenient, as the Aylesbury parish registers do not show anyone named IRWIN or any variant thereof before 1812, but the Bledlow PRs are full of IRWINs (IRWINGs, IRVINGs, etc) from 1697 onwards - my family. :) Unfortunately, I don't know how he connects to the other Bledlow Irvings, or my family. He (as William IRVIN) married Mary X EVETT at Aylesbury 2 Oct 1831. Witnesses Ann X Evett, Horwood John Bunce The 1851 census shows John EVETT, father in law aged 75, pauper born Aylesbury, living with them There were banns published at Aylesbury, but no marriage, for William IRVIN & Anne EVETT 14 Feb 1830, with a note "Entry deleted" in the transcript. Hmm. Among their children born in Aylesbury - 21 Sep 1832 Jane daughter of William & Mary IRVINE of Walton, Pensioner 10 Jun 1835 William son of William & Mary IRVINE of Walton, Chelsea Pensioner (buried 25 Nov 1847 as IRVING) 10 Apr 1839 George son of William & Mary IRVING of Walton, Tailor The 1841 census (from my own incomplete transcription, online at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~lanchbury/genealogy/aylesbury1841.html) shows - William IRWIN 52 Labourer Y Mary IRWIN 27 Y Jane IRWIN 9 Y William IRWIN 6 Y George IRWIN 2 Y Elsewhere on May Lanchburys genealogy pages (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~lanchbury/genealogy/) there is a transcript of the Bledlow PRs, by Dexter Eustis. Not quite complete, as Dexter seems to have worked from LDS films some of which were of (incomplete) BTs rather than the original register, but very good nevertheless. You may find William there. But be warned that people - & that lot I think more than most - moved around a bit, & occasionally someone might remember growing up in one village, but have been christened in another. My great-grandfather always reckoned he was born in Oakley, Chinnor, where he grew up & his parents lived when he was born, but his birth certificate & christening record agree on Aston Rowant, where his grandparents lived. His mother went home to mum to have her first baby. You can buy a copy of his army record from the National Archives. Reference WO 97/488/87 - WILLIAM IRWIN Born BLEDLOW, Buckinghamshire Served in 30th Foot Regiment Discharged aged 42 Covering dates (should be the dates he was in the army) 1804-1829 http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATID=-3938329&CATLN=7&Highlight=%2CBLEDLOW&accessmethod=0 Be warned that you need to look out for vast numbers of variations, including ARWIN, ARVING, ARROWING (yes, really!), HERWING, HARAWING - very difficult, at times. Any more questions, perhaps you should contact me off-list. Paul Irving.
