    1. [BKM] Gunthorpe and brickmaking in Bucks
    2. R. Nesbitt
    3. Hi I am researching the Gunthorpe (Guntrup, Guntrip and many other variations) family from Buckinghamshire. It seems that the majority of the males were involved in brickmaking as their occupation. Could any lister help me as to where I could try to get information on this occupation in the 1850's to 1880's in Buckinghamshire. Is there a Buckinghamshire newspaper for 1880's online? Thank you in advance Robyn

This is not a general finding - the vast majority of them in 1798 were agricultural labourers, with a couple of shoemakers thrown in. It is possible that they did a little brickmaking as a diversion in the Hungry Forties, when farming was in diffcilties, as most of them lived (since the 1660s) in an area with -at the time- good brickmaking clay. This was worked out by the mid 1850s, and many of the labourers had to move in search of work, taking anything which offered. We published a substanbtial article on brickmaking in an issue of Bucks Ancestor, and in another one, a list of all the brickyards in Bucks. Copies of the magazine are available at 1.50 each plus postage. Please contact me directly if you want these.
