Dear Nivard, What a fount of wisdom you are. I suppose this message is a bit off-list but I'm sure those who subscribe would like to know where "Nivard" comes from? It don't sound too Bucksy to me! And you are somewhat out of county in lovely Cornwall! My gripe is always that there are very few subscribers to South Bucks people. My Harris lot are Coleshill and Amersham and Harris is quite a common name to boot but seldom appears in all the messages that seem to mostly refer to North Bucks. Foreigners to me! Born in Beaconsfield and bred in the Chalfonts - marooned in Hackney for 40 years where are my ancestors? Goodridge, Wootton and Lanes (there are lots of those in the Wycombe area). Come on South Bucksers - where are you - much better scenery than in the flatlands of Aylesbury and environs. Is Stokenchurch & its environs far enough south for you? I have quite a few ancestors round there. I must admit, though, there are plenty from the flatlands: especially Aylesbury & Waddesdon, but also stretching across the border into (dare I mention it?) Oxfordshire. BTW, there's also a Harris:- " Lydia WITNEY bpt as adult 28 Oct 1820 age 26yrs. Stated that she was baptd as an infant at Presbyterian Meeting House at Princes Risborough (Bucks). Received into Chinnor Parish by W. Musgrove" Maiden name Harris. But I've yet to find her meeting house baptism, & her parents. :( Paul Carol Lee wrote: > Dear Nivard, > > What a fount of wisdom you are. Hello Carol 'arris, I, too, am a "South Buckser" ... not lucky enough to be born and bred in the same area as you, though my grandma and her ancestors were!! My grandma was Clara ATKINS, b 10 Aug 1875 at Amersham to Benjamin Grant ATKINS and Amelia GIBBS who married 17 Sep 1868 at the Baptist Meeting House in Lower Amersham. Clara's dad Ben ATKINS b 16 Jul 1840 at Amersham was a silk-dyer 'til the 1870s, then became a photographer and later had a second-hand shop and was bill-posting. His parents were Thomas Grant ADKINS/ATKINS [from Banbury] and Mary BUTCHER. Thomas was first married to Elizabeth BALDWIN [3 Apr 1809 in High Wycombe] who produced 6 children before 1830; I presume she died before Thomas married Mary on 25 Mar 1834 in Hughenden. I know little about his first family. Mary BUTCHER was an Amersham lass, too, chr 5 Nov 1797, the second of 13 born to John BUTCHER and Sarah NASH [another Amersham lass, b 1772 to William NASH and Mary ELLIOT]. John, chr 13 Apr 1766 at Hughenden, was the son of Thomas BUTCHER and Mary SLATER. My grandma Clara's mum was Amelia GIBBS b 14 Oct 1844 at Seer Green, Beaconsfield to John GIBBS and Elizabeth PEPPET who married 20 Nov 1841 at the Baptist Meeting House in Lower Amersham. Elizabeth was b 9 Jan 1824 in Coleshill, but I know little about her PEPPET, ROGERS, BODY families from Coleshill. The Chalfonts GIBBS family I know little of, too. I believe Ben ATKINS was the Amersham Town Cryer from at least 1899 to 1907. Would there be any records to give me exact dates? Is there likely to be any photos of him? How/who/where would I make contact? Clara's mum Amelia ATKINS died of TB at Stone Asylum 3 May 1904. Does this place still exist? Could I check any records still in existence? Although she died of TB, that wouldn't have been the reason for her admission as she's there at the 1891 census and also in 1901 [this time 8 years younger!]. Does anyone know anything of my granny's families? I'd love to find some "cuzzies" who must be 'round somewhere! Any suggestions or connections would be very much appreciated. Kind regards, Norma Bethune [in Mosgiel, nr Dunedin, New Zealand] Carol Lee wrote: > Dear Nivard, > What a fount of wisdom you are. Dear Carol I am a South Buckser born and bred, as was my Father and his Maternal side of his family. Unfortunately we all come from either High Wycombe or Great Marlow. The names of the families I come down from are PRICE, HARPER, HOLLOWAY, ROBINSON and BOWLES. It would be lovely to hear from anyone else with links to these South Bucks families.
